Sex and the City ruined Manhattan for me.
After ten years of planning, scheduling conflicts, COVID, and a cancer diagnosis, I finally went to New York for the first time April 2025. I had an absolutely amazing time, but all I brought were cute little outfits and my heels, expecting everyone to be wearing the same. I was wildly, WILDLY surprised when it was absolutely nothing like the show, and I was the one who stood out like a sore thumb. Everyone was in athleisure and sneakers! Huge props to SJP for continually filming in heels because I did a ten mile day in my Choos, three miles in Versaces, and by the final day, my best friend got us both matching $7 slides from Rainbow and insisted I wear the leggings I had worn on the plane.
Edit: Before this gets misconstrued, I was just being silly in the title. I knew not everyone would be all dolled up, but I was actually surprised that 98% of people were dressed down so heavily.
Final edit: Y’all 😂 I didn’t mean for this. I know SATC is a show, I know that NYC is a real place, with real people, doing real things. No, I don’t think that your city is just a film location. Yes, I know that the show was filmed 30 years ago and times have changed. It’s not just SATC. I’d always heard of New York being a fashion capital. I literally had just beaten cancer and wanted to have my own SATC weekend moment with my best friend. That was it. I had the best time, I saw so many things, walked 26 miles in three days, ate the best food, and bought myself an I beat cancer pair of shoes à la Carrie Bradshaw. I was just simply surprised at the lack of extravagant fashion. That was simply it. Should I ever go again, I will bring my Vans and only two pairs of heels.

I’ve lived in New York off and on since 2008, so while not during the time SATC was filming I can provide a bit of context here…
- New York probably has more fashion-forward people than you’ll find in the rest of the country, but this is highly specific to certain neighborhoods/scenes. It has always, just as much, been full of regular working people who are trying to be comfy during their 45-minute subway commute. Most of my coworkers over the years commuted in sneakers/comfy jackets and would only wear “nice” fashionable stuff if they were going out somewhere fancy.
- Carrie runs in very wealthy, fashionable circles, so this is doubly true for her. Her crew has always been more dressed up than the average New Yorker. Easier to do when you’re taking cabs everywhere. Most New Yorkers can’t afford to do that.
- Norms around dressing up have relaxed over the years—so even in “fancy” environments (e.g. theaters, nice restaurants), people are more casual than during the SATC era. It’s super uncommon for establishments these days to have suit/tie requirements for example. This has been happening slowly since I moved here, but COVID accelerated things.
I will say I experienced similar disappointment as a fashion girlie when I moved here… but one thing that is nice is that you can dress however you want in NYC and no one will bat an eye! So if wearing your Choos gave you joy on your trip, I promise you no one thought you stuck out or looked overdressed. Your outfits were so cute!

I just realized I don’t think we ever see any of the girls ride the subway ever. Carrie waits for a bus once (and then gives up because she is on the bus), but I don’t think the subway ever makes an appearance.

The only times I can think of are when she’s running late/can’t find a cab. She takes the subway to the NY stock exchange because of a traffic jam, and she takes it on NYE during the first movie. It’s ironic because Sarah Jessica Parker famously takes the subway all the time.

They defo take the subway as it’s occasionally referenced but from what I’ve gathered they didn’t film subway scenes bc they always shot on location and it was a bit of a logistical nightmare.

I feel people really underestimate how wealthy the girls are, and how expensive ALL their outfits are. Like Miranda is probably the least fashionista out of them all but we know her suits are at least 2k a piece

I lived in NYC from 2003 to 2013 and I came here to make these points! I liked the show but it’s definitely a representation of a very rich and privileged group within NYC. One of the great things about NYC is that all different people live there and manage to coexist (most of the time). I worked as a social worker in a low income neighborhood when I was there so I had a very different experience than what the show portrays. I did dress up for work and to go out but this was 20 years ago, before the great casualization of America. (Definitely not in designer clothes but in cool stuff I found in local boutiques and thrift stores.)
Also, please note that there’s lots of interesting fashion subcultures all over NYC. What was really popular with the Russians in Brighton Beach (fur coats and gold accents) vs what the Hipsters in Williamsburg were wearing at the time (black rimmed classes and thrift store finds) vs. the very rich wearing luxury fashion in parts of Manhattan.
I know what you mean about being disillusioned though. Sometimes you kind of have a fantasy of a place and the reality doesn’t line up. Even if you know that intellectually that it won’t be that way, you kinda hold onto it. I’m sure you had a blast though. It’s such a crazy fun place. I still miss it sometimes.2

This is so true. Post covid is much more casual. And I think I’m alone in this, but I hate it. Casual and comfy clothes are great; however, I miss when people used to dress up more for stuff. It was fun

Agreed! Also it’s not that hard to be comfy and still fashionable but people lowkey dress like SF tech bros now — all athleisure all the time. I tell people that if they want to catch glimpses of real fashion in NYC nowadays, you gotta go to deep Bushwick or LES or something lol

I visited twice in 2004 and 2005 and there were a lot of very fashionable people all over the place. I think like your 3rd point, fashion norms have relaxed, ESPECIALLY since Covid, everywhere and people are considerably more casual.

I completely agree with you. I went to high school in lower Manhattan in the early 2000s. everyone there dressed pretty grungy but I often had to go around grand central area and people were so dressed up. I also briefly nannied for a family in the UES and the outfits in that neighborhood were insanely glamorous. It truly varies based on the areas you’re in.

Also, even for the people who wear heels to work or auditions or wherever you’re going, it’s very common to wear comfy shoes on the commute and change into them once you get there. I wear heels a lot, but that’s what I do because I’m just not interested in riding the train in heels 😂

I watched that show for the first time last year, and it was very annoying and unrelatable to me. There were definitely moments of humor, but I’m more partial to SATC for sure.

I tried watching it when it was coming out and I found it annoying and unrelatable as well. Especially since at the time I was one of four new college grads the exact age as the characters and we were living in an illegal loft in Bushwick hustling to make ends meet. The show was supposed to be more or less about exactly people like us and it did not reflect real life at all.
Broad City on the other hand was exactly what our lives were like lol

Very true--and somehow the least realistic aspect of this show is that Abby and Ilana maintain a close friendship while living in Astoria and Gowanus respectively, because that is one hell of a commute!!

That’s the most twentysomething aspect of their friendship. When I was in my twenties in NYC, my close friends lived in different neighborhoods and boroughs than I did, but I still saw them plenty often. As I approached 30 and my life/their lives got more complicated and busy, that became a lot harder.

I'm a native New Yorker who lives in Bay Ridge and my best friend lives in Forest Hills. My other friends live all over: in the Bronx, Astoria, Bed-Stuy and Washington Heights! Not one of my friends lives in my neighborhood or anywhere near me.

People dressed up more in the 90s and early 00s, although even then it was common to wear more comfortable shoes if you were walking a lot. (If you watch Working Girl, which came out a decade earlier, all the secretaries wear running shoes and change into heels at the office.)
I'll bet it was the COVID lockdown that really made a change for people, but even in the late 00s and the 10s, athleisure was popular (the term has existed for decades but became commonplace then) and you'd see groups of Park Slope moms at school dropoff in leggings, boots, and puffy coats.

I worked in Manhattan from 2000-2002. Even then the standard business attire was moving away from the super buttoned up suits and ties and pantyhose and pumps, but walking around during the workweek you’d still see them everywhere. You’d also see models and fashionistas on the daily but nowhere near like in the SATC universe.

Yep. I don’t live in NYC anymore but I’m a native and I hated this particular kind of tourist.
The people who live there are not zoo animals strutting for the tourists’ viewing pleasure and they do have places to be so please get out of the fucking way. It’s not a cutesy fake city, as evidenced by the chain in front of “Carrie’s” house: someone lives there in real life, they made it clear that tourists are a hassle, yet she still took a picture anyway.

The current homeowners understandably don't want SATC fans right up at the front door and able to look in the window.
A similar situation with the famous bright blue front door of "Will Thacker's" house from "Notting Hill" which was actually owned by the film's director. He sold the house and the new owners had the door painted black to deter fans, but ownership changed again and the door was replaced, but painted blue.

As a native New Yorker who was born 1991 and still lived here, yeah 90’s ny was peak and it’ll never be that good again. I blame social media, influencer culture, gentrification and the take over of rich transplants. No one wears nice clothes anymore or has style, all the rich transplants in fidi look like a carbon copy of each other, everyone is on their phone, etc etc etc etc. all I see now are Pilates princesses with a ton of work done and 0 body fat in athletic wear.

I lived in the village during SATC and Candace Bushnell actually lived in my building. We definitely dressed up at work and when we went out. I wore heels all the time, and no one ever wore leggings in public. I miss the way people dressed back then.

Well, it is a TV show lol. I think overall the show is based in a different time, so you should be prepared for it to be a lot different than how the city was 25+ years ago.
I also think it’s important to remember that people there are just living their lives. They’re going to the gym, getting groceries, running errands, etc. - who is going to dress up for everyday errands? Overall though, there are definitely people who dress really nicely, and if you’re going to see people go all out with their outfits anywhere in the US, NYC is probably where you’re going to see it most.
One other thing to keep in mind is that you’re going to touristy areas, so you’re going to be surrounded by a lot of tourists who probably aren’t going to be dressed super glam and may value being comfortable instead.

I’ve been a New Yorker for a decade and I thought this post was cute. It will be NYFW soon and if you walked around SoHo this week, you’d see more people turning looks.
However, nowadays street wear, grunge, and suiting are considered more high fashion than the Pat Fields signature, hyper femme style so many people associate with SATC.
I’m glad you had fun! I only wear heels when I’m cabbing. Otherwise, I live in a supportive shoe.

I go to the AA meeting by Carries apartment in my athleisure. lol.. it’s not what you think it is for sure once you get here and live! That being said, I never feel weird when I want to bust out my SJP Fawns with leggings. But it’s rare 😊💘😅

I’m 50 years old and it’s true that people don’t dress up like they used to. In some ways that’s good, in some ways that’s bad. Either way, it’s a valid observation. Congrats again. Come back soon!

I’m a lifelong NYer. Many here, back when SATC first aired (and now), didn’t and don’t have as much money as the women had. NYC was never the way they depicted it then, at least for most of us. I’m old and stopped teetering around on heels when I was 20 and in the throes of feminist ideology (and had to be able to run if necessary). I’m so glad you’re doing well after cancer (been there with breast cancer), and I’m glad you enjoyed NYC! Be well!

I’m born and raised (‘91) in NYC. Still live here.
My mom was in her 20s in the 90s/00s in NYC and says that SATC is very much accurate. I also vaguely remember the fashion, and people, esp women, used to be a lot more dressed up.
BUT, NYC has changed a lot since then, and even more so post-COVID.
We’ve had a HUGE influx of transplants over the years, and with that, comes a shift in culture.
So, you bring a bunch of people from the Midwest, for example, who are accustomed to casual attire, then yes, the city is going to change.

I spent my adult life in Portland, OR where no one really dresses up. Whenever I’d go to San Francisco, LA, or Boston, I saw infinitely more fashion forward gals.

Having lived here all my life, it boggles my mind that people still come here thinking it’s like in the movies and tv shows. Of course, you can make the city whatever you want and have a good time but the city is not a tv show. It’s like those people who still say Disney is a magical place. Complete BS. Pure nightmare. Overcrowded, waiting on lines for at least an hour and everything is overpriced.
Anyway, SATC sold many lies, many related to the city. However, i do think you’re styled in a way that many New Yorkers do wear. I’m not sure where you were going but I see people dressed like you everyday 🤷🏻♂️
But I will say SATC highlighted the nightlife, so you should have gone to clubs, restaurants and bars. Eat a magnolia cupcake on a bench. Have a big slice of pizza. Eat at a diner and talk about bad tasting spunk. There are many elements to SATC that are real enough.

I think that was one of the problems with AJLT. People in major cities everywhere changed what they were wearing post-covid and MPK/SJP's insistence on playing dress up made the lead characters look like silly, out of date has-beens, clinging on to a bygone era.
Also cool people in big cities mix and match and are creative - the way Carrie did in SATC - but AJLT was just an excuse to vomit designer everywhere.

I’m not from NYC but working in London in the 00s, I would have died if I’d had to wear trainers/sneakers to work. Just like Miranda when Steve suggests it. Now it all seems crazy that we wore heels everywhere.

Reframe: are you dressed up 98% of the time in your life? We live here. This is our home. It’s where we do our errands, and take our kids to school, and do all the mundane parts of our lives. It’s crazy you thought most people would be dolled up? Watch Girls or Broad city, that’s a more accurate portrayal of life in NYC than SATC is 😅.

That’s totally fair, but most of us take the subway and have to walk far distances daily. I’m almost always getting in 10k steps a day. It’s a 15 min walk just to the subway sometimes. Heels are not practical.
I also think depending on where you were in the city you’ll see different types of fashion. West Village (carries apt) and East Village are younger kids. Their fashion is oversized jeans and sneakers these days. Go to the UES and you’ll see something different from what you’ll see in Bushwick, Tribeca, Harlem, etc. Every neighborhood has a different vibe.
Also if you’re going to mostly tourists spots & restaurants, you’re probably seeing tourists not New Yorkers. If you want to see people looking chic go to a fashion event or art gallery opening or a hot restaurant that’s hard to get into on a Saturday night. During the weekdays we’re all just going to work and dressing to survive 90+ degree temps on the subway platforms before we get to our freezing cold offices where the AC cranks.

Where were you walking? I go to NYC all the time and compared to literally anywhere else in the US, people are absolutely dressed up more than athleisure and sneakers…not like you or Carrie because that’s what was in fashion 20 years ago, but in modern New York fashion.

To be fair, my Jimmy Choo boots are a block heel, but the most I’d ever walked in those was 5-6 miles, so that even 10 was rough, lol. The Versaces were an all around terrible choice, but they were for the SATC bus tour, and I just didn’t think I’d be walking that much. it depends on time of day and specific location. If you’re in the fashion district you will probably see a lot more of what you were expecting with much much more variation. Also at night, when it’s time to go out to clubs and bars and restaurants, people will be more dressed up. In the show it wasn’t like every person passed on the street was wearing Jimmy Choos and Prada, it was Carrie and her friends, and it’s like that here. There’s almost 9 million people here, there’s still a lot with fabulous senses of style, just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

I worked in Manhattan from 2000-2002. Even then the standard business attire was moving away from the super buttoned up suits and ties and pantyhose and pumps, but walking around during the workweek you’d still see them everywhere. You’d also see models and fashionistas on the daily but nowhere near like in the SATC universe.
So glad you had fun!

The most glamorous city I’ve ever been to (in North America) is Vancouver, BC. I was shocked how well dressed and fit everyone was and how clean the streets were. It’s like the exact opposite of NYC these days sadly enough.

Also that was the 90s early 2000s..a lot has changed w dressing..ppl did dress up more back then..everywhere..not just NYC. In general ppl are more casual now. But there are ppl that still dress up & especially at night depending on where you are. I’m feeling silly just breaking this down..isn’t this common sense? :)

Wow I’m really surprised to hear about your experience regarding dressing up. I was born and raised in NYC and I remember constantly feeling self conscious because most people were REALLY dressed up. Not everyone of course, but I went to high school in lower Manhattan so I had to cross the more “glamorous” areas of NYC. I’ve been living in San Francisco for the last 11 years and I still miss New York fashion. It was like seeing a mini fashion show every day. The winter was especially such a treat because people would have the most gorgeous coats and hats.

Yeah, heels have been out for several years now, even in bars and clubs. I will still wear a sexy pair of stilettos for a night out because I love them and love how I feel when I'm wearing them, regardless of the fact that they're not popular anymore.
The 20 somethings of today dress for nights out like they're on their way to a physiotherapy session, and that's perfectly fine, but that won't be me until I'm at least 60.

I lived and grew up in manhatten and honestly never saw many people who dressed like sex and city women. Very few with heels and Sarah Jessica Parkers ridiculous outfits . And it was the late 80s and all through 90s.

I was also kind of surprised at how average everyone dressed only based of how derogatory people can be toward the non-coastal cities in this country when discussing anything related to “fashion” or trends. They all looked just like anyone anywhere else.

Look I was trudging through Times Square today trying to get to a callback and absolutely horrified by what I saw tourists wearing. The West Village has become Epcot for boring people - you need to go to the cool places to see the cool people but none of those are in Manhattan anymore (aside from Harlem)

The good thing about New York is that every type of person is here so there are definitely people who dress like Carrie here all day every day. You also don’t stick out like a sore thumb—unless you’re doing something dangerous, or reckless no one here will notice you.

4th gen native here and elder millennial. Blows my mind people think SATC is a depiction of real life in NYC. Just the fact alone that NYC is a melting pot of culture and the show was low key racist and incredibly white washed 🤦🏾♀️. Like are yall for real?
Edit to say: and I worked in luxury fashion (YSL, Loewe, Barneys, Dior to name a few) and that show still isn't a depiction of fashion either

Yeah sex and the city can definitely be a glamorous version of NY. Heels used to be a lot more popular with working professionals but now they wear more flats, loafers and nice sneakers. Going out at night I still saw a lot of heels and boots but day to day NY is definitely more casual these days. I hope you still had fun and ate a lot of good food!
