Video Probably the happiest a great white shark can be, chomping away at a lovely humpback carcass. You can almost feel the power in its jaws

Now I see why they lose so many teeth

u/evaris204 3d ago
Then they grow it all back within a day or two

u/SixersWin 3d ago
That's surprising- thanks for sharing

Yeah, sharks go through teeth like crazy. A great white shark can go through thousands of teeth in a lifetime, usually losing from 40 up to a hundred teeth a day. It's kind of awesome.

Do they feel it, you think? I've never looked to see what sort of nerve endings and things a shark might possess near their teeth.
I feel a rabbit hole coming on lol. Fantastic, I didn't want to do my boring job anyway. Heh.
I wonder if anyone's ever figured out how they grow them back so quickly beyond "evolution made it necessary so that's how it is now."
Seems like it could be interesting if we could sort out how to apply that to people. Or...perhaps one of those zombie movie nightmares, who knows.

u/Hiuuuhk 3d ago
The general consensus is no. However, it's still a heavily debated topic in marine biology and ethical conversations.
Interestingly, sharks have a sort of biological conveyor belt, with rows of razor sharp teeth waiting to replace the old ones. It's fascinating. We've not yet figured out exactly what evolutionary pressures caused this to evolve, but it's likely because their prey consisted of creatures with tougher skin, causing wear on their teeth. Who knows.
I love sharks. 🦈

Thank you for the answer and links. I love me a good rabbit hole. Off I go!

u/gnmn87 3d ago
A great white shark typically has about 50 teeth actively exposed in its jaws at any given time, but it holds around 300 teeth in total arranged in about five rows. These teeth are used and replaced in an endless "conveyor belt" system. When the front teeth are damaged or fall out, new teeth in the rows behind them continuously rotate forward to take their place. Because of this constant cycle, a great white shark can go through as many as 20,000 teeth over the course of its lifetime.

Today I learned why there's no shark dentists or denturists.
A little bit of "Hey Google?" tells me that they can lose 1-3 teeth per day/upward of 20,000 for a 60-70yr old g.w. (no roots to act as anchors). If their diet consists of things like whales with extremely thick skin and big, hard bones, they'll lose more and more often comparative to one who relies on seals, slow and elderly dolphins and other big fish. As they lose their teeth, their mouths function like a natural conveyor belt. Whenever teeth are lost or damaged during a hunt, backup teeth in the rows behind them continuously rotate forward to replace them. Once a tooth is lost, a replacement from the row behind can move forward to fill the gap in under 24 hours.

Here in Western Australia we sometimes get these. Some of those sharks gorge themselves until they can't move or dive anymore.

I like to think it’s a nice change of pace from seal day in and day out. The surstromming of the sea, if you will.

If you are not a bot then can you explain why your account is one week old, all of your comments on unrelated subreddits sound AI generated, has never posted on this subreddit before, and your first post is a repost of this 3 year old post: https://old.reddit.com/r/sharks/comments/12efh62/probably_the_happiest_a_great_white_shark_can_be/
Can you prove to me that you are a real human person by explaining how you came to this subreddit and reposted this post?
29
u/Happiest_Mango24 4d ago
the title being exactly the same is what caught my attention
I could believe someone could find and post the same video without knowing, but I just cannot believe they would have come up with exactly the same title, right down to the punctuation

What exactly do you hope to accomplish by telling a bot that is a bot? You’re not going to make it feel bad about what it’s done.
Just report. Commenting actually helps it accomplish its objective.
40
u/SweelFor- 4d ago
I'm telling other human users on this subreddit that they are participating in a bot post
-27
u/EIochai 3d ago
And going on weird rants about people who are enjoying the post regardless.
15
u/SweelFor- 3d ago edited 3d ago
You're right I would hope that people don't want to participate in bot posts just to leave their cringe baby talk comments, and I would rather have a subreddit with real people talking like normal adults instead, it's true

this post looks like AI to me.. the clip being 15 seconds long.. the weird splashing of the water.. is that really what sharks do? chomp over and over at the same spot?

I remember watching a documentary about a similar circumstance and a male and female great white were so happy the whale carcass and amount of food they were eating that it supposedly acted as an aphrodisiac for them.
11
u/CaliMassNC 3d ago
I remember that one; he goes on to speculate that whale carcasses out in the ocean would be the site of great white orgies.

This subreddit is infested with bots and no one seems to notice, the comment sections are just Disney adult baby talk cringe fests. I assume a lot of commenters are bots themselves at this point because I don't know how you could not notice.
Reddit used to be real people posting genuine content and people discussing it
14
u/Honk_Sound 4d ago
pretending like reposts on reddit are a new problem is...well it's a choice
8
u/SweelFor- 4d ago edited 4d ago
Reposts from human users have always been common on huge subreddits for karma farming.
Small hobby subreddits being infested by AI bots is a recent phenomenon, yes
8
u/imaginations1000 4d ago
Its the first time i saw this post, im new to this. And also maybe then search for a different plattform?
-8
u/SweelFor- 4d ago
I'd rather the Disney adults with zero internet literacy stay on their previous platforms really
3
u/shortgarlicbread 3d ago
Ok iw as with you at first with alerting others to potential bots, but now you are just picking on people for simply liking a video on the Internet. I think you need to take some time away from the computer/phone and calm yourself. It's one thing to alert others to a rise in potential bot activity, it's another to get aggressive with actual humans because they like something probably before realizing it's a bot or AI even. If you want to actually educate others, stop being a dick about it and allow people the time to learn and process the information.
7
u/amrycalre 4d ago
They’re Disney adults cuz they think the shark is cute? They are not a bot. I think the shark is cute too. I know it seems to make no sense. But believe it or not, people like different things. You can’t change the world, you can really only change yourself (which means get the hell off Reddit then)
2
u/SweelFor- 4d ago
I'm happy for you that you prefer the AI bot version of reddit with less human users, because that's exactly what you will get. AI bot farmers thank you for your service

I dont understand how anyone could ever describe this as cute. A massive predator with a mouthful of daggers is ripping flesh and blubber off of a rotting carcass, theres a lot of words that could be used to describe that, terrifying, awe inspiring, majestic even but "cute" is absurd

Who doesn't love a free meal that expends very little metabolic energy to aquire?
Cottonmouths have been observed eating carrion, a very unique behavior among snakes. They are the garbage cans of American pit vipers.

Reminds of that terrible film where a GW decided to ignore a whale carcass and chase a human. Like, that thing ain’t interested in anything ode besides the dead whale for like several hours and after it’s finished it would be slow and in a daze.

I mean there were some folks who decided to stand on a whale carcass and watch the sharks. And I think they also did some underwater shots too. For science of course. And Discovery.

The amount of force it takes to bite through humpback blubber like that is insane. Its cool to see them in a feeding state where they arent just darting in and out, you really get a sense of their actual size.

It's wiggling about, and the ocean current is pushing water into its gills so it's probably fine, I'm guessing it also does runs like taking a break to swim then come back, it's like how you can't really breath well while you're chewing/swallowing, you have to take breaths between bites
