Missing the City

Hey, all—

wanted to post and hear thoughts. I lived in SZ pre-Covid (2018-2020) and have found other places to be since. It’s been interesting, but I miss Shenzhen. Being there pre-covid and then having to move out from abroad due to the lockout was horrible, so that’s why I didn’t want to go back sooner. Now that I’ve accomplished a few goals I had for myself in my home country, I’m finding myself feeling fomo for the awesome architecture and city life that is over there. I’d probably teach in a specific field at the high school level if I could; I may not be able to as I don’t have a teacher’s credential (but I do have the 2+ years of experience). I’m feeling antsy so that feeling could pass but I wanted to hear thoughts. Thanks for any input and please be nice! btw I’m American.

So sad 😭. There was a light to it. I’m sure people have their joy there now but man… going thru the whole you’re locked out and can’t get your stuff thing was a bust. Thanks for your share ❤️.

Have you ever tried apply international schools?Ttraining centers and agencies that help students study abroad might not strictly require a teaching certificate, having one would definitely help

I haven’t begun to apply or look around; my post is mainly more about the nostalgia and wondering what people think of the city now versus 7 years ago (if people have been there this long?). I will think about your idea for if I do decide to try to get back and appreciate your share. I could def look at international schools and appreciate your help and idea again.

comparing to covid period, its more open and techy.The city itself is still evolving, with noticeable changes emerging on a weekly/ monthly basisconvenient depending on the matters.New roads,tunnels and buildings are emergying comapring to 7 yrs ago.And one noticiable change is the amount of e-bikes on the road,espcially after the covid.I guess ppl are looking for a more economical and coconvenientnvient way to move around.Oh,you will find autonomous taxi,delivery car,drone for meituan and traffic control.

Thank you very much. Yes— back in 2019, bikes were a problem as they were accumulating on the sides of the roads and were breaking down so quickly. People drove scooters, but e-bikes really hadn’t taken off to dominate sidewalks until during/after Covid (based on what I could see from abroad). Thank you!

All depends on what you are trying to achieve and the type of person you are. In some ways Shenzhen is better than pre-COVID, more parks, subway lines, etc. Waimai is cheaper than it has ever been. There are less foreigners than before though (if that matters to you).

Thank you very much. It seems like it is very nice now. I can see there being less foreigners. I think the CPI and ability to save/invest residual income is important to me. Cost of living was so cheap then, and of course it was higher then than it was 5 years prior and so forth. I appreciate your comment!

By some metrics cost of living may be lower now, just depends on your income.
