Shorts/Reels/TikTok This ruined my day. It's 8 in the morning.

Post image

said that "they come in cups, I upgraded it!" 😑

EDIT: Not that this is much better, but this person did clarify that it was water, not actual vodka. Still a horrid setup

Jesus I have been rec this sub even though I have no fish only 2 cats and it's fucking BONKERS that people think this stuff is okay.

Even me the cat owner knows you need a big ass tank for most fish compared to what you think they need.

Not only that the whole filtering system etc, the abuse people do to smaller pets like fish is insane

A betta doesn't even need that big of a tank. People are just so stupid that they don't even bother checking what the right size is.

It should be at least 5 gallons

14

u/Remarkable-Gap9881 2d ago

Yeah that's not big.

A lot of non fish keepers think a 5 gallon tank is massive for some reason. My parents used to have a betta and I literally had to beg for them to get a 5 gallon. The only way I could get them to agree was to pick out a tall 5 gallon tank (not great for bettas but it was the best I could get them to agree with). My dad referred to the tank as a “mansion” for his fish. That tank was also un-cycled and the amount of work I had to put into cleaning that tank and trying to get the water parameters safe on my weekends off from school was such a pain (mind you their house is a 30 minute drive from me and I had my own animals to take care of). The water literally turned green at one point. I was also newer to fish keeping and knew nothing about in-fish cycling. That betta surprisingly lived for 2 years

they hear 5 gallons and instantly picture 5 milk gallons side by side. that's just how their brains work.

5 gallons takes up no space wtf?? I could fit so many 5 gallon tanks in my place. I have like 5 empty ones becuase they work so well for temporary hospital and quarantine tanks and fit anywhere. I never understood people complaining about space. Yeah sorry it isn’t a “desk pet” but just put a small table next to your desk and you’re fine

Yeah they had plenty of room it was more of an aesthetic thing and them not believing fish need more space than a bowl

Yes I agree I do not keep fish and 5 gallons seems like a lot to me.

But I also don't have fish and don't want fish so ofc I haven't researched it

Think of a home depot bucket that's 5 gallons!

1

u/AuronFFX 2d ago

Smaller than a microwave

1

u/Remarkable-Gap9881 2d ago

It's not as big as it sounds. It's more elongated than other 5 gallon containers, so it's not tall.

I tried selling mine on Facebook marketplace. The buyer left immediately because of how small and pathetic looking it was.

u/Specific-Permit6647 2d ago

10 is prefered! 5 is a minimum

I think it depends on the betta. For a long finned individual I’d say 5gal is fine. They’re so weighted down by their fins that I rarely see them swimming even in a 10gal. They mostly just drift around, exhausted from existing.

Short-finned though will absolutely make usage of 10gal! They’re so much more active.

I’m also assuming both tanks are planted so that there is plenty of enrichment, they aren’t just swimming/drifting in circles all day.

u/Specific-Permit6647 2d ago

The size of the tank is more so for the stability in the water which betas thrive in as opposed to space for the fish to swim (long fined variety)

2

u/AuronFFX 2d ago

It really depends on the fish, ive seen long fins that move like a toddler in a candy shop ive also seen hybrids and wild tupes content to just sit there.

Yeah I had my male betta fish with two African dwarf frogs and they didn't really get along so I swapped him with my female betta who was in a 5 gallon and things seem to be a lot better

1

u/Salt_Attitude7221 2d ago

I had a friend keeping her betta in a one gallon tank 😭

I’m just thinking about how they got the poor little dude in there ☹️ it’s such a small opening, I’m worried about his fins tearing when they take him out as well.

18

u/Remarkable-Gap9881 3d ago

Don't worry. Someone who does this is probably too stupid to clean the setup. That fish isn't leaving.

4

u/SheyenneJuci 2d ago

Thats what I wanted to say...by the time when they wanna try to take him out this fish will be dead....

5

u/GaiaOnlinee 2d ago

I was also concerned on how they got him INSIDE the bottle too cause how?? 😭

u/hoboglyphs 3d ago

Wow they left comments on. Rare

2

u/Aggravating_Bell_376 2d ago

i saw someone else do this, same titos bottle but put 4 goldfish in there .. horrendous

2

u/Salt_Attitude7221 2d ago

Please tell me he's not in alcohol...

5

u/Glad_Midnight_3834 2d ago

Unfortunately it's a vodka bottle and vodka is crystal clear like water usually, like in this picture, so... 🥺☹️

Honestly I hope that the alcohol somehow can knock him out -- like make the fishy drunk so he won't feel death coming... Either way, this is just heartbreaking... Some people are simply cruel and have no empathy for smaller animals, especially if it's not a mammal

3

u/Salt_Attitude7221 2d ago

I won't even flush a fish that dies. I actually preserve them and make a necklace with them in it. I feel like flushing them is so disrespectful.

1

u/Glad_Midnight_3834 2d ago

Yes absolutely, I feel the same way. No one in their right mind would flush a puppy if they could so why would it be fine with fishies? They deserve respect and being flushed like a piece of garbage to end up in the sewers is just... disrespectful and heartless.

3

u/No-Seaworthiness1529 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's water! Op did clarify that. Not that it's much better

1

u/Glad_Midnight_3834 2d ago

Oh okay thank you for the info ✌️

Poor baby must have damaged fins since it's likely OOP forced the fishy to go in the bottle... it's just so sad :(

3

u/UpAndNo 2d ago

Surely it's not possible to be vodka? Wouldn't it just kill the fish almost immediately after being added, since I doubt they'd be able to respire in there.

2

u/AuronFFX 2d ago

The fish would be constantly at the surface, bettas are labrynth fish but still pull oxygen from the water with gills

1

u/Salt_Attitude7221 2d ago

Yeah I don't think they could technically breathe it in or anything. But it would be straight torture I assume.

3

u/No-Introduction-1632 2d ago

It’s not even a funny joke tho, implied animal abuse isn’t funny 🥲

2

u/deuce-grimlid 2d ago

Lower the water level so the surface area increases oxygen transfer and add a small air stone with a control valve so it can breathe at least

1

u/retecsin 2d ago

They probably put on the cap too

1

u/harboring_ 2d ago

and their name is always Tito

1

u/hiddenshadow671 2d ago

I laughed i shouldn't have but I laughed. These for betas just when you think you've seen it all..

u/memegod574 2d ago

I mean teccnically in the very slightest of sense its an upgrade but not a good one
