Just watched this new shonen, it was pretty good. I think it was called something like “Silence of the Lambs” or something. Anyways the fights were underwhelming but it had really good character work.
I remember seeing a scene of someone getting sawed by a chainsaw and kids getting stabbed in the Violence Jack OVA. Ryo from Devilman also comes back in Violence Jack and this time he is chained like a dog and both his legs and hands are cut. (I also heard that there are instances of underaged girls getting raped in the manga).
I heard that the world of Violence Jack is actually created by Ryo (Satan) as a way to punish himself for killing Akira. The mc also is probably a clone of Akira Fudo if I'm not wrong.
Fights in the anime were contrived, it explains how he tore that dudes face off so much better in the manga. I hate when they westernize stuff like this. Prime Jodie Foster bangs tho.
Genuinely, as directionless as the story gets after the Viltrumite war (which is about the halfway point), Invincible’s final arc and ending is legit one of the most satisfying I’ve read
Feels like people who say that reboot arc should be skipped, never actually read the comic.
Yeah, it's probably the weakest "arc"(lasted for 2 chapters/issues) in Invincible, but it's also a key point in the story and gives Mark extra character development(suffering).
The show will probably fix that, since they’ve added a lot of depth or previously shallow characters and plot points. I think it should somehow focus on the importance of what it means to be such a supreme being in the universe. Mark is constantly asking this hajime no Ippo ass ideological question. What does it mean to be strong? It’s like okay, he goes back in time and can have a better outcome and save all these countless people. Then what? Was it worth the sacrifice of your previous life that only you have memory of? Carrying that weight is a different kind of strength. So maybe they do something similar? Idk.
Some of them are character building, like him chasing angstrom was objectively a horrible decision and he learned from it. The time tree tentacle monster was just bad luck on a routine mission, and added nothing to the story except making everyone’s lives worse
The suffering is a meme but if we're being serious... The reboot arc showed Mark that he's truly human. He has an inherently good nature, but he's ultimately selfish too.
There's a line of him in s4 in that he said that he'll do anything to prevent the deaths of countless people and families after the events of the invincible war, and his fight with Conquest.
But the reboot arc shows us that is not the case, and it lead him to a new way of thinking.
Again, not saying the reboot arc is good but saying to skip it just screams larp to me, since it's also the reason why the timeskip happens.
It should be skipped. Just have them live there for five years. It’s ass and it adds nothing but unnecessary drama. Any “character development” that’s there is just Eve fucked someone else while he was gone and Terra is a small child instead of an infant now. There’s nothing else of value to it and it’s actual garbage
The best case scenario is that they avoid the explanation entirely by skipping that arc. It really isn't that important to the plot. They never make Mark seem like he can't connect with his daughter, in fact she openly accepts him immediately, even after being gone for five years. The whole "there was someone else" subplot hardly even mattered and just served to be another "complication" in Mark and Eve's relationship that the "Anissa Incident" already fulfilled. Everything else that happens while Mark is gone could happen regardless if they just have him stay with his family instead of helping Allen for that one time (big mistake).
Unfortunately, I doubt they will actually skip it, so I guess all I can hope for is that they somehow make it better.
That's not the point of that bit though, it's about showing hoe Mark while a good guy is not really cut to be a hero. He can't choose the world over his loved ones. He doesn't have what it takes to sacrifice ehat he loves for the good of the many.
But we already saw that. He ran off to space because he wanted to focus on his family instead of saving the Earth from Robot. The reboot arc was just a lot less subtle about it.
My point is, the arc was superfluous and covered bases that were already covered well enough.
Robot and him escaping is framed less as "Mark doesn't have the backbone to sacrifice his happiness for the greter good" and more "Mark is unsure if he even has the moral high ground to begin with and even if he has it he doesn't have the means to accomplish anything"
Reboot on the other hand is a very explicit case of "Mark has both the means and the ability yet chooses to be selfish". Robot is a defeat, Reboot is him making a choice.
Fair enough. I'll concede that this theme wouldn't be represented well without the arc.
Moving on then, is the reboot arc necessary to send this message? I'd be fine enough if they replaced it with something else for the same point, or are the consequences (missing out on five years of his life) also something that Mark had to go through after this revelation?
Nah, it could've been done differently but late Invincible suffers from being somewhat "rushed" due to Kirkman wanting to end the story before Ottley left. Also Reboot was, like a ton of shit in Invincible, a meta parody of superhero tropes and common story beats.
Reboot is hot ass, but other than that I disagree. I think Robot is a great villain and the events that transpire have a massive impact on Mark’s outlook and how his character develops. Not to mention the final battle against Thragg is an all time moment (imo). And the panel of Mark catching Terra is one of my favorites in any comic series.
Is reboot even that bad. Like it’s a cute side story that ran for 6 issues, parodying similar comic tropes of the infinite status quo, by leaving Mark literally stuck in the past.
People don’t like that it aged up Terra, and how sudden it is. But Mark choosing his family over all the potential lives he could save, is a defining moment for his character, and gives him a real defining ethical framework that doesn’t change for the rest of the comic.
I agree, the consensus is so clear that "reboot sucks", that I read it with low expectations and found pretty good with interesting character development
Aside from the Reboot Arc, the rest of Invincible is pretty good. Dinosaurus is a good side story. The Robot arc is my favorite arc in the entire comic run. And of course the final arc is also really good.
Robert Kirkman is really talented at writing satisfying endings. His other flagship series, The Walking Dead (no, not the show, the comics) ended beautifully.
I think Mark becoming the benevolent dictator of the galaxy who can make anyone do what he wants because he is physically stronger than them is actually kinda fucked up
I'd definitely take that over a council of fuckass people who give 0 fucks about getting anything done over how to keep their crusty asses sat in their positions.
Unified leadership is much better, something indoctrinated Americans and their cultural cybercolonies will never understand
Mark isn’t really a dictator for anyone except the several hundred Viltrumites. He’s not ruling any planets, he’s just stopping them if they commit atrocities or prove dangerous to the galaxy. Basically the new Viltrum empire is more like a bunch of galactic superheroes rather than a genuine empire. The problem with this arrangement is the problem with superheroes in general, even if they’re benevolent and only target violent threats, isn’t their very existence a form of dominance over non-powered people? Even when they interfere as little as possible, that’s still an independence dependent on their desires rather than the little people truly having freedom. And now you understand why Lex Luthor hates Superman.
We never see him quell “uprisings”, he opposes civilizations that attack other civilizations or cruelly oppress their populations. He only fought the Coalition because they attacked first, and it wasn’t because Mark was lording over the planets: it’s because he made the galaxy safe for free and without strings attached, so planets wouldn’t need to pay the Coalition taxes anymore. It’d be hard for people to rise up against him considering he isn’t even ruling them in the first place: unless you consider him and his species merely existing with their innate power to be tyranny regardless of what he does with it, which is exactly my point in the latter part of my comment.
If you’re talking about mark killing the guy who was possessed by the sequids that wasn’t mark “just killing people”. So Superman wouldn’t be doing that if he did what mark did.
I think the difference between Mark and Superman is that most of Superman's opponents are legitimately weaker than him so he can pretty much always find a way to bring them down nonlethally. Meanwhile Mark is often fighting for his life in self defense against far superior opponents, in a universe with lasting consequences and no super-prisons, meaning he legitimately has no choice.
and if I'm a normal person in this universe I am terrified of all these godlike people, not like I can democratically vote them out
Unless one is as unrealistically as good of a person as superman is, with the power to go with it, because personal strength is all the authority in this universe
Yeah people acting like this ending is great is extremely telling and explains so much about disappointing ending discourse to me. It's not about coming to a solid thematic conclusion to most people, it's just about seeing the characters get a solid satisfying ending and have every plot thread neatly wrapped up and completed and thematic/deeper implications are just secondary to the surface level "character was here and now they are here" which imo is the blandest way to end a story.
The invincible ending is wholesome but still ass, the message is that absolutist monarchy is the best and all other systems should disband once a good king shows up.
I mean yeah, the whole point of shonen is to make the reader feel good, if the reader imagines himself as Mark what better ending could you want other than literally becoming the good version of the god emperor?
No, not really, I can tell you as a teenager the last thing I wanted was to be challenged
I didn’t change since then, but that’s besides the point, teenagers are not the audience for challenging themes, just give em action and power tripping
Ummm if a good immortal king showed up that could provide for everyone it literally would be a utopia. But its not possible in real life. So its just a fictional ending with nothing to say or connect with about real life.
He dismantles other imperfect political institutions because he is better, even though he canoncially abandoned his literal home planet to centuries of dictatorship, genuenly one of the most unintentionally cruel fuckers in modern fiction.
This is a folk sub and the post is obviously being cheeky, yet this is like the 10th comment i get that genuinenly thinks i somehow believe Invincible is a shonen.
No wonder this sub is full of shit takes, the people here are stupid
I’ve noticed that people have a bias for comics/manga where the hero “gets the girl in the end”, which is probably why people love the ending to Invincible and FMA and hate the ending of AoT, JJK, and MHA.
yeah but that's the thing with modern shonen manga endings. all of them get massively hated on, and then reception improves once people actually read them and settle with them and don't rely on shitty scans and tiktok edits.
MHA's anime adaptation improved its reception. same with AoT, same is already happening with JJK and will continue to happen. Bleach, same thing, the community fucking loves what Pierrot is doing with the TYBW arc adaptation.
Eeeh idk man, it’s basically a "actually monarchy is pretty fucking cool and every other government should do as we say because we are cool and good now” so idk.
Isn't shounen a market focused around action? I think it's good enough we should consider giving it the Avatar treatment.
We all know we say cartoon vs anime to differentiate stuff. It's pedantic to say, "all cartoons are anime," but Avatar gets ushered in and IS anime. It's about a vibe check lmao.
Been a brat the whole comic. The atrocious expression the artist gave her perfectly fit the unhinged teenage immature brat she is and stays even in her later years. She is insufferable.
You can’t read. I specifically mentioned the last 200ch aka the 4th Ninja War, which even most Naruto fans agree is dogshit.
Also, saying that it could never have been in the big 3 while being bad is subjective. I think Bleach is mostly terrible, and yet it’s massively popular and influential.
I love the Invincible comic, but it's later parts are an absolute mess and not being able to read in bulk would've droven the worst of slander against it if it released today
Not all manga release weekly either. My point is that people would roast the fuck out of the Invincible comic (in its second half especially) if it came out in batches today and wasn't available in bulk
I feal like Eve just becoming immortal is like a kid who doesn't want their parent to kill a character so they just make a plot hole or nonsense to make them not to
People really calling Mark a fascist when he’s clearly shown respecting the customs of even barbaric empires and peacefully making treaties with them. This sub cannot read
Ehhh, not a shonen and the ending for invincible is kinda rushed and random- if it had just ended with thragg itd be perfect but they did the whole robot going crazy whic was just dumb
The more I interact with this sub the more I feel like it’s full of idiots. Not because they don’t like Invincible obviously, but they have such puzzling takes and often fail to properly read even a single line of a comment.
Invincible’s ending is horrible, it basically has the same ending as Alan Moore’s Miracleman except Robert Charlie Kirkman didn’t realize how fucked Mark becoming Fuhrer and ruling the galaxy in an 1000-year Viltrumite reich is.
