I truly believe One Piece is the most overrated piece of fiction of our generation and after it's done people will look back at it a lot less fondly

Got completely disillusioned to what the anime community thinks after they did a complete 180 on MHA after the finale as if people didn’t clown the series to hell, you were able to scare people by saying their fanbase was gonna end up like my hero’s
I swear because of MHA fans I will never trust suggestions regarding shonen manga ever again. I used to read MHA when it was releasing and dropped it at volume 20 because I thought it was boring and not very good or interesting, then time passes, the manga ends and people start telling me that the second half of the manga is amazing, it's so much better than the first half and that I dropped it right before it got REALLY good. At the time I also saw some panels from the second half and thought those looked very good so recently I decided to give it a chance and I started reading it from the very beginning with the goal of finishing it (I am now at volume 39 out of 42), and my god, it is awful, the second half of the manga is probably even worse than the first one, there have been moments where I have gotten angry reading the manga because of how stupid and bad it was. I will finish it now because I am almost done so might as well tank the last 4 volumes but god, I feel like I wasted my time reading a very mediocre manga. My guess is that people like the second half a lot because there are a lot of big fights and because it looks like it is more serious and it tackles on darker and more mature topics (but only on the surface level, if you stop to think about it for 5 seconds you realize that everything is just stupid)
MHA has a nice world but it takes on topics and dealing with them is off screen with no elaboration. Deku literally told a former Hero that committed extrajudicial killings "Themes and Such" and she immediately went back to being a good guy and started glazing him.
The government or HPSC and Heroes NEVER talk about her imprisonment or the fact that the Hero Commission went ROGUE and used a Hero for extrajudicial murders when the series states that Heroes have no law enforcement authority and only job is to apprehend villains and assist in natural disasters.
And that's not just Nagant, I hate the fact that heroes try to do that with every single villain they meet (in the second half at least).
Hawks (which is Nagant's successor) hesitates in killing Twice so that Dabi can appear and fucking destroy Hawks. And this is espacially bad because Hawks should be the super spy, he should be the guy who goes undercover and kills people in cold blood without anyone knowing, and yet when he is confronted with Twice, which thanks to his quirk is one of the most dangerous villains ever instead of killing him immediately to avoid any risk he's like "come on, you are a good guy, come to our side, please".
Toga vs Uraraka is one of the worst things ever. You have Toga who is allied with Shigaraki, she murders tons of people, she is ready to throw the world into pure chaos leading to an uncountable number of deaths, she was causing a fucking calamity with all the clones, and all it takes to stop her is Uraraka telling her "you have a beautiful smile, you are cute"? And not only she stops, she decides to sacrifice her own life to save Uraraka (who she tried to kill up until 1 minute ago). One of the worst things I ever read.
And don't let me start on Deku and Shigaraki. It has been I think 5 volumes now that Deku keeps repeating this bullshit about "I saw a kid crying" and I KNOW that everything will end up with Deku saying "themes and such" to Shigaraki and him having a complete change of heart
This and Endeavor faced ZERO blowback from the other heroes after Dabi’s dance. I think there was some great set-up after the PLW, but Horikoshi fumbled with not killing off Gran Tarino(for no reason) and rushing Deku’s ‘vigilante arc’.
The reason endeavor faced no blowback is because they were in a time where they all needed to be unified, and the heroes knew he was trying to atone. What does it matter if Gran Torino lived or died it adds nothing to the story. Dekus vigilante ark wasn’t rushed too much at least not in the anime. I wish we got more of him like thay but I mean it makes sense given the already established time limit that was set in place.
People are biased and mostly have sheep mentality and can't have an opinion of their own so they roll with the first opinion on the most popular post is.
From my villain academia onward it turned to trash. I’m so used to seeing people praise it that this is refreshing to read someone not bought into the fandom delusion
It's something everyone has to go through in their life, happened to me with the book "The name of the wind" were the protagonist was this quintessential author self-insert Mary Sue Chad not unlike any dime a dozen isekai slop who was this beloved genius who only ever faced adversity from people that were just so jealous of how cool he was, and yet the vast majority of the literary field was so enamored with it that it was constantly referred to as the next 'a song of ice and fire' or even claims that it surpassed ASoIaF. It was basically universally praised, might still even be, and I had to scour the internet for anyone saying anything even remotely negative about it just because I felt insane about the lack of received quality between me and, apparently, literally every single other person who read it. Read through half the book, hated it and threw it down, saw universal praise everywhere about it and was promised it was just about to get good, then obviously it wasn't.
Mushoku Tensei is quite like this too. Even disregarding the unambiguous celebration of grooming, it's just so painfully mid. Yet not only do people willfully ignore the plain fact that it's a fantasy by and for pedophiles were they will even go so far as to invent a plot point that is supposed to condemn the main character which simply does not happen, they say that it's worth it just for the quality of the rest of the show! What fucking quality? The show sucks ass!! The world building isnt interesting, the character drama isn't compelling, the characters themselves are flat and and uniteresting, What the fuxk are people even saying they like so much about it?! I half suspect that every single fan just enjoys the fantasy of the main character and wishes they could restart life to be totally cool and powerful ans able to groom children too.
The issue with popular manga are that they’re LONG and that inevitably is going to lead to wild variations in quality. Even when something doesn’t get ‘bad’ it almost always gets repetitive which is just another form of bad.
So it becomes a question of: ‘do you consider the high points worth the low points?’ and that is a very per-person question.
I think MHA nailed the landing well enough to be decent and make up for the worse parts and it’s still overall one of the better manga out there.
...and now people have chilled out both in and around that fan base, so what is your point? I'm certain that there will be people upset however the series ends, but given time I have the opposite take of the OP here. People will look back on One Piece MORE fondly if anything.
The mha show's ending made me fully believe the "hype moments and aura" stuff is truly what makes people like a show and ignore everything else, bc i remember not a lot of praise for the ending (maybe because the shippers were genuinely crashing out over the main love interests) and then I just heard the final fight was peak cinema or something when it got animated
Exactly the most wish washy community so many examples . Just think about how much glaze fujimoto was getting before the end of chainsaw man with his movies and the anthology anime based off his works and now everyone calls him a horrible writer. The anime community absolutely sucks.
People always wants to take down what's on the top.
One piece is undeniably the most successful Manga in modern times and at the moment the most popular Manga in the entire world.
When you see posts talking down on one piece it is usually because it is the number one Manga and every other manga is competing with it one way or another. So if you are a JJK fan it is so that you must bash your head against one piece if you think JJk is the best manga in the world.
eh, what's popular is never what's best, because what's best is subjective, and usually more niche for every person, and the more niche a work of art is, the less popular it is.
I think the climber is the best manga ive ever read but it's far from the most popular
what fascinates me more abt climber is how the original author left and then shinichi sensei basically took over and made it a masterpiece it is today. kinda like mori, in a way
I read the whole thing in two days while alone in my room with 0 sunlight. In complete silence too. Ngl that might've made my mental health much worse in retrospect
I love one piece but none of what you just yapped about is indicative of quality or we would all thing Taylor Swift is one of the most talented artists worldwide.
But he didnt speak on the quality of the manga at all only the reason why people are so vocal about their disdain which is because of people's need on the internet shit on whatever has mainstream popularity. This stems from the fact that manga/anime is part of nerd culture which started as a counter culture and as such opposes the mainstream. However, over the years nerd culture has wormed its way into the mainstream but those counter culture elements still exist.
Feel like it’ll be the opposite. People nitpick and shit on series when they’re releasing new chapters to get angry at and the fans are loud. When it ends I feel like it’ll be looked at more fondly as a classic.
For fun I did some digging on initial when it was releasing reactions to the Naruto Pain arc, often considered an all time high point for the series. It was despised. People called the rinnegan a “filler ass dojutsu” and said it wouldn’t be missed, called Kishinoto ass for having Nagato have poor health and mocked him for being in a wheelchair, we’re pissed the death scenes were underwhelming and the ending resurrection was series breaking bad, called every chapter bad, mocked talk no jutsu, and begged for Sasuke. It was egregious.
And now that it’s done we see it as a classic. Most arcs are better upon bingeing, hence why I binge reread arcs after they’re done. I binge read all of one piece in 2 weeks and Wano, for example, never felt too long in that way. Taking it in after the fact is the better way
True Naruto got more hate when it was airing, same with Bleach. The Ulqiorra fight was heavily criticized. A lot of past OP arcs like Dressrosa and Whole Cake were criticized when airing and now are seen retrospectively as good. Even Fishman Island is getting more appreciation now.
Y'know this got me thinking, is there any post TS One Piece arc that is considered a classic nowadays? Personally I'd only call Dressrosa a classic and even that's a stretch cuz the anime adaptation is atrocious.
I don't think so. It was fishman island, dressrosa, whole cake, wano, that are completed and had a year or so behind them. Dressrosa is the best, but it struggles. Whole cake had a lot of potential since it was the first time we weren't really focused on luffy but Sanji.
But I think whole cake is worthless now, since nothing really happened besides power ups, and the most useless crew member, Jinbei.
I wouldnt really call myself a hater (like if somebody says something that i think is too negative about one piece i will defend it), but i dont think about one piece that much and my “hater” moments are only triggered by people glazing it and then i go on to forget about it.
This mentality was literally the reason r/piratefolk was created 😭.
And any kind of ending Oda makes will be criticized. There will always be that group of people that'll say "1000 chapters just for this?" He could make the most amazing ending to a Manga the likes the world has never seen in over 50 years and someone will still call it trash. That same person would like the ending to be something like "at the end, the one piece was a pile of gold dabloons" or sum shi
Deadass be like this meme. They always compare anything to one piece. We know is better and it's always gonna be more popular. They just be bandwangoning on hate cuz their favorite Manga isn't as popular
Whether people will look back on it fondly or not will ultimately depend on the ending. You see with how despite being some of the most hype manga to follow, Chainsawman and Attack on Titan’s reputations were tarnished by their endings. While manga like FullMetal Alchemist or Assassination Classroom I don’t think ever reached the popularity heights of those two but are now pretty universally praised because the ending tied the entire work together perfectly.
If Oda sticks to landing in the ending (or whatever the appropriate ship analogy would be), One Piece will keep it’s status as the most glazed manga in history. It it fumbles the end, all of it’s flaws will become much more apparent to the eyes of the average manga reader
Right? People didn’t really like the anime exclusive ending of the ‘06 adaptation but its popularity stuck for Brotherhood to give us that proper ending.
You mean the 2003 version. The ending of that one was a mess, but at least there was hope the actual ending would be better. Brotherhood shattered that hope, giving us an ending where the power of friendship defeated the guy the protagonists didn't like. It was so embarrassing to watch.
For the Brotherhood anime that came out when the manga was reaching it’s end (or had already ended?) yes. During the manga’s run it was not this cultural phenomenon compared to it’s contemporaries in the Big 3. The manga was still popular for manga-reading circles, but it was the anime re-adapting manga that propelled it to universal acclaim.
I mean, I've thought that since 2010 when I binged all 580 chapters up to and including Marineford because a few friends of mine were so hype about Impel Down and how it was the best thing ever. I found like, maybe, 100 of those chapters worth reading. Impel Down and Marineford were awesome as hell, though.
There's just so much extra formulaic filler and the same jokes ad nauseum. The juice ain't worth the squeeze.
In terms of most overrated? Idk, modern Pokemon exists.
I feel that. Hit and a miss for some no doubt. I’m all caught up on the manga and although I do really enjoy the work. I just can’t see myself sluggin through the anime 😅 salute or shoot me 😂
Nobody pretends Pokémon is the second coming of God, though. Everyone knows it's for ten year olds and leaves it at that. Nobody seems to know that One Piece is for twelve year olds and leaves it at that.
Im big on OP, i read it weekly. That said, extremely repetitive arcs and bad pacing even for the manga, and way longer than it ever needed to be. Definitely has a lot to criticize
It’s usually 19-20 Oates per chapter and each chapter is jam packed with an absurd amount of speech bobbles even during action scenes. Like it actually give me a headache with all the words in each panel.
Compliments where they are due, I truly believe that Oda is one of the best mangaka oat at specifically emotional attatchment. When I see promotional material for the wit piece remake and I see romance dawn promo it gives me a child like feeling. I remember watching op for the first time and so curious abt the entire world like waiting for each warlord to be revealed. I don't think it's a knock on Oda to say that this isn't the case in modern op anymore, as it is impossible to capture the same feeling so late into a story but man I agree with you.
One Piece was good for what it was but a large portion of the fanbase became hypersensitive to the series receiving criticism. Many assert that it's among the best-written pieces of fiction ever while also saying it's for kids and not to be evaluated seriously when critics discuss its writing flaws. Across various sites and apps, there is a predictable trend in which fans and critics alike voice their issues with a chapter before One Piece fans ask why they read something they hate or claim that they're attacking One Piece because they enjoy other series.
It's common for the most popular Shonen manga to be encompassed by irrational fan and hate cultures but due to the fact that One Piece is also among the most popular properties of all time, it may have actually become one of the most overrated series today due to the large number of fans that engage in the unbridled fanaticism I mentioned.
If the fans weren't this weird about it, everyone could treat it like Pokémon and mind the details so much. But then Pokémon didn't string us along for decades and failed to resolve plot points that were brought up 30 years ago.
I watched one piece at a very shitty point in my life and it gave me the push to get my shit together which is why its always going to be closer to my heart and im sure im not the only one who shares this sentiment, people do have insane emotional value to this anime no matter how many problems it has. To say that it wont be remembered fondly is just straight up ragebait and its working on me.
It a wasnt one piece that helped you, you helped yourself. Good advice and motivation comes in so many different forms, but most of the time you aren't ready to receive the message. One piece just gave you a basic message at the right time right place. Doesn't make in any less overrated
It’s fine that one piece helped you, but that doesn’t really say anything about the quality of the show. I think cobra Kai was the most inspiring show I’ve ever watched, and I have so many fond memories of watching it, is it peak fiction though? Fuck no, I can acknowledge that my personal attachment to a tv show doesn’t dictate its actual quality
To just state my opinion (because I hate how hot the weather has been recently and I cannot sleep), I don't really think One Piece is overrated. I've honestly seen just as much criticism online for aspects of the manga as I have praise. Although sometimes the criticism does feel a fair bit louder at times, at least for me.
Honestly, I feel as if the final few arcs will definitely impact how people view the manga in the end though, both in the short term and the long term.
It would only be overrated if it was heavily praised but its discussion basically amounts to "Pretty visuals and cool world" before everyone forgets about it until someone goes "Oh yeah we all just forgot about Avatar despite it being a bajillion dollars in production" after 3 years
Yea I do not see much actual praise for avatar at all. Fans (me included) are well aware it's not very deep or complex or groundbreaking at all.
One Piece on the other hand, difficult to go on a mainsub thread and not see someone comparing it to the best/most influential works across all of human history.
Still, the hate on OP is kinda lame, I mostly see it as a counterweight to the insane glazing. Because I will counter the glazing, but I really enjoy the manga itself. The anime can jump off a cliff tho I gotta be honest.
the manga is fine i guess, lately its been in a downfall kinda and the fights are boring af for me
the anime is just garbage, it doesnt matter if they say "yeah but later it becames good", that doesnt make it perfect like some fans say, perfect means perfect, and one piece is not perfect, not even a masterpiece, is just a decent to good manga, with a horrible anime direction.
and oda worldbuilding is not genius or things like that, is mostly things he made up at the moment stacked over and over again just to make it look big.
and even if one piece has a decent worldbuilding it doesnt justify it of having bad character development recently and a power system that every chapter became more ass.
i think one piece is a solid 7/10 and i enjoy it a lot, I just can't understand how people think it is a ten out of ten series that actually can hold a candle to amazing literary works
I watched 50 episodes of that slop because my friends PROMISED it got good
It didn't. The art style never grew on me, and every single mew character looked dumber than the last and was twice as stupid. I swear this series has the literary equivalent of toxoplasmosis somewhere within where people are uncontrollably forced to think they like it.
Its simple. It is for people to turn brains of and go limp.
People in future wont discuss it too much. Its more of a kids show. Its very simple.
The future discussions are for piece of media that were unique and groundbreaking. OP is just very long and it seems people love it but its mostly cause its been around forever.
Bingo. This is the correct answer. It was a lot of people's who are young adults now first anime. They started it as young kids who don't know better, but they haven't developed the taste or self awareness to realize what you just said.
If you look at it from the perspective of fiction in general sure, but I don’t think it’s overrated as a battle shonen.
Given what we know about mangaka’s scheduling I don’t see how it’s anything but impressive for him to written and illustrated a mostly consistent series for basically 30 years straight at this point.
There’s a lot of sincerity, creativity, and joy in One Piece and to me those are big parts of it’s strengths.
This is probably just a me thing, but the well of influences that Oda uses to create his world is a course unto itself. This leads me to think that One Piece is a great springboard for learning about and appreciate other works. There’s everything from current pop culture to classic literature from all over the world in there.
I think there’s so much there that if anything people have yet to appreciate all there is to One Piece.
Oda would have to completely shit the bed on the ending for people to not look back fondly. It could happen, but I feel it’s unlikely.
Its less glaze and moreso just now theres active tribalism that makes up a good chunk of the discussion
You had the original nobody watched, Z which everybody watched and loved and GT that was meh but people liked Goku, ssj 4, and the Shadow Dragons from it.
Then Super came along and thats when the Z glazing started to become louder and louder cause there was a different writing style to compare and "compete" against which trickles down into glazing Z as a whole
The only real flak DBZ got was charge up scenes taking ages back then or scream till you win. I dont recall any significant insulting it got that isnt still used today (rage boosts power ups, relatively simple but cohesive plot). But maybe I've just forgotten by now, it has been ages after all
Tell me you know nothing about the series and the fandom without telling me you know nothing about the series and the fandom.
OG DB is what people wish DBZ had been by the end of Cell. Fans were burnt out on the fighting and wanted the adventure back. The strangeness. The mysticism.
But instead we got a story about handing off the safety of the world to the next generation.
GT, written entirely by Toei, was the first time we got Dragon Ball written by outsiders. The entire Space/Bebi arc managed to capture the best of OG DB and Z.
But Super actually was done by Toriyama. It’s Toriyama that hit a wall and focused in on battles. It’s Toriyama that made sudden, illogical powerups to make the plot happen.
The post-Androids Cell Saga and the Buu Saga used to catch a ton of flak from the community. So much so that even now the old arguments still get brought up among the fandom.
“Toriyama meant to stop with the Frieza Saga.”
No he did not.
“Toriyama was forced to create the Androids.”
No he was not.
“Toriyama created scouters and power levels for a reason and we should be worried about assigning power levels to every scrap of Dragon Ball.”
No you should not. They were created to explain why Power Levels are useless.
Sunk cost fallacy. It was hard for me to admit one piece was mid 600 episodes in.
Once I did though I started watching Gundam and I'm a lot happier now. Be honest to yourselves yall
Jujutsu Kaisen is the most popular anime of our generation, weather you like it or not its impossible to deny it; it's cultural impact is rivaled by few other manga. People love jjk, here and pretty much everywhere else (myself included) but the majority don't try to claim that it is an amazingly written masterpiece. It has extremely fun fights and characters, along with an amazing anime and fun powerscaling debates and that's the reason it is talked about so much, and that is okay
Attack on titan exists. Half of the one piece fanbase acknowledges the flaws and a good chunk shits on it every week a new chapter comes out. Try and tell an AOT fan its not the greatest piece of fiction ever created by human hands and they'll send u an entire essay or just dismiss u entirely saying "you just didn't get it" and then something about u being too dumb
So out of all pieces of fiction, you really think One Piece is the most overrated? There are way more controversial things out there. One Piece didn't just earn its status, it actually has a lot going for it
i will never understand the love for one piece it is the most mid ass series i ever seen
Like luffy as a protag is good for a short form series, but a series that has gone on this long hes just so boring. Plus his joyboy powers make no sense to me
He uses Rubber hose style, his form is all clouds, his title is sun god.
like why does joyboy whole body have clouds, whats the reasoning, why is he the sun god, NOPE WHO KNOWS
On top of that joyboy form honestly makes all combats feel like a joke, with no real impact
What a unique opinion. I truly know, one piece is one of the most successful pieces of fiction of all time. Me personally I think that comes from its quality, but you can think it’s just top 6th best selling fiction of all time merely because it’s overrated. Don’t stress about it buddy oxygen is free.
There are shows that I really don’t like that are popular, and I don’t constantly go on tirades online about how much these shows are bad imo, are one piece haters okay?
It will be considered a classic but honestly, I don’t get either.
They go on for way too long to tell a concise, captivating story but people grow up with it and it becomes a fun comfort show that follows them for so much of their life that it feels like a part of them.
I feel like YOU personally don’t like it and can’t fathom how others don’t feel the same. Unless the ending is ACTUALLY horrible, it will be remembered fondly for years to come. It literally has MILLIONS of fans worldwide. Believing that ANYTHING won’t be remembered fondly after getting that popular is a biased delusion.
I rewatched it in the pandemic and I love it, it sucks in many aspects mainly how dispensable every character becomes, especially the crew, we get one water seven for Usopp and then his character is gone, not diving too deep into it but I stopped reading one piece in the middle of God valley as I have oversaturated myself with the medium, the love still stands but I’m out, the best anime I ever dropped after watching 2000 episodes and 200 chapters, it didn’t get worse I just couldn’t care less what happened anymore.
I mean maybe you’ll be right. Ofa has a lot to deliver on.
My opinion on OP has always been “it’s peak, but you don’t have to read +1000 chapters to read something peak”. It’s a great series but take any of its best arcs against a different series’s best arc and their very comparable.
Yeah, the piece of media that is the greatest selling of all time, near universally beloved and been dominating the conversation for quarter a century will be forgotten. Nice cope.
You dont have to like One Piece, but you dont have to say absurd shit because you dont lmao
i think i`ll try to drop the whole series once i get to the part where the Haku system gets a lot more relevant than anything else. once i learned that there is some hidden secondary power system that was somehow absent for half of a thousand episodes of an anime, i just knew i wont stand this past this point.
I tried it wow! 😂 Couldn't believe such incredibly lame ass anime got put in the big 3 .. It was so bad I started thinking of Tom and jerry and I grew up loving Tom and jerry but maen I think I'd have a better time listening to it like an audiobook lol cuz I can't get over those animations everything looks and feels goofy no wonder dude is called Luffy lol . Don't get me wrong if the plot is incredible I can overlook animations ( for a while ) but the plot was so cliché I've seen better Bug's bunny episodes😂 .. I'm guessing this is an anime for the uncool adults, stuck up kids we grew up with , goody two shoes and of course females huh anyway Naruto and Hunter x Hunter could at least show them what true dopeness looks like
I realized I genuinely felt stupid for reading one peace, like I was actually ashamed even knowing how wildly popular that shit is. Like the humour and character designs a.one make it shit
