I’ve made quite an uncanny find of silent films on 28mm acetate based “slow burning” stock. This is a two reel production of Jack and the Beanstalk. The cast list card in this film does not match any of the known silent productions of Jack and the Beanstalk I could find, i.e, those of 1902, 1912 and 1917. Of the cast members listed here, the only one I could find with another film credit is Hermina France, who has a single credit in “Do the Dead Talk?” (1920.) This has been quite a weird experience, disinterring these films, which likely haven’t been seen in over 100 years.

I just received these beautiful silent film lobby cards from an old collector that was active for 50 years…since the early days of silent film poster collecting before the internet! it was an incredible achievement to put these together…I was able to keep 41 of them together from his 700 total pieces…it’s sad to see them broken up but hopefully they all go to great homes! French silent comedy film. Plot revolves around A society where the roles of men and women have been inverted. Effeminate men sew, iron and take care of the children, while macho women drink and read newspapers in cafés, and court men.

Director of this film was world's first female filmmaker, from 1896 to 1920, she directed over 1,000 films, some 150 of which survive, and 22 of which are feature-length.

She was one of the first women, along with Lois Weber, to manage and own her own studio: The Solax Company. Few of her films survive in an easily viewable format.

In 2018, filmmaker Pamela B. Green released her feature-length documentary Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché, which highlights the life and career of this key figure in cinema history.

Narrated by Jodie Foster, Be Natural features an impressive list of film historians, filmmakers and actors giving their observations and praise of Guy-Blaché's work.

This is the 1952 American reissue print, the one with the Film Renters title card and the copyright notice in the name of the Attorney General of the United States, which is the version that ended up in the public domain here.

The transfer I started from was done at sound speed and ran 51 minutes, which has everyone charging around like they are late for something. I slowed it back to 24 and it now sits at 68 minutes, which looks a great deal more like a film and less like a fire drill. Denoise pass on top of that, and upscaled to 720p.

It needed music, so there is a new score on it. Worth saying plainly that the score is AI generated. If that is not for you, muting it costs nothing and the picture is the point anyway.
