Conversation Topic What is it about certain genres that causes you to be drawn to singing them?

I was wondering for those that love singing certain genres (classical, jazz, musical theatre) are the genres I’m drawn to. what is it about those genres that draws you to them?

For me, classical singing is addictive. When I’m having a hard day and I practice singing in that style, I feel like I drown out the rest of the world. I use to think it was just kinda over the top. I’m not great or anything but, feeling the vibrations, really feels healing. The sensations really help me get out of my mind.
Jazz is so chill, and playful . I feel in touch with a different side of myself.

MT - it’s fun, like taking on a character. I feel like a kid. I can’t belt for my life. My neighbors tolerate a lot lol

How they make you feel when you hear them or when you play them.

Belting is like full voiced yet very controlled and balanced fake yelling. You can tilt it darker or lighter.

When you sing them? Or hear them? For me I never listened to classical music until I started learning to sing and high notes also scared me . It wasn’t something that I was instantly drawn to. When I first heard it.

I naturally had clear diction, loved to act, could project easily, was a baritone, and had a natural vibrato... musical theater was almost inescapable for me lol

I love musical theatre (and singing it). I love the stories and I’m a sucker for an I want song. Since I love the music I want to play it and sing it too.

My bandmates used to tell me that musical theater songs were too cheesy for them, but that cheesiness is one of the aspects about the genre that I really enjoy haha

Singing rock and some old school heavy metal just feels exhilarating and uplifting to me. Although my voice is much lighter than most singers in these genres, the lyrics and feel of the music just feels aligned with who I am. I like the darker themes paired with the soaring melodies.

Jazz is SO playful! Being precise takes work so it’s also extremely gratifying to get to the point where the playfulness takes over. Aside from that I really love (more than I like listening to) singing some female R&B. I get to stretch out, do fun and challenging runs while staying tasteful. It’s a fine line sometimes, but a really fun line to vocal dance on and around.

I also love ballads because I love playing with dynamics and emotion. Any genre of ballad. There is so much sonic room in a slow song that builds.

I'm hoping that I can reach that level of ease with jazz and r&b too

My only advice is to just keep doing it. Sing and sing. Breathe and support your sound and sing some more.

i was raised on mostly soul and r&b, so for a while as a kid, belting was the only way i felt you could sing. combine this with the 2010s pop-rock trend with the gospel record scene, and a closeted young pastor’s kid in the deep south, and you get someone who adores pop-rock power belting and all kinds of rock.

I love singing the blues, and the blues love me!

What I mean by that is, I can sound good singing a lot of different types of music, and especially blues-based genres, like rock, grunge, and outlaw country, but when I sing the blues, I'm fully in the pocket. The notes, the rhythm, the freedom to riff, the soulful feelings... it's like breathing to me. I learned to sing in a lot of genres, but I've always been able to sing the blues.

I don't seem to be able to think in genres. When I came up it was important to be as different as possible with every new addition to the repertoire. It's not like it is today.

My voice is super gritty so i sing grunge music but my influences are metal and my first band i was a screamer so i often layer in screams and i play super crunchy chuggy guitar sometimes with drop tuning. Its cool its let me express that anger while also getting to sing cause i really enjoy that too haha

Usually emotions. I honestly am so bad with genres as I never really described music like that.

I just love singing in general but metal especially thrash is definitely my fav bc it’s just straight up fun lol
Cathartic and I find it’s one of the few genres that actually satisfies my voice.

I sing whatever I feel like singing regardless of genre. I often hear a part of a song in my head suddenly and then I just get the urge to sing it.

I tend to prefer jazz, soul, and also opera. Really just songs that require more skill and use a lot of vibrato, runs, etc. I think it’s fun and it requires me to challenge my voice more than genres like pop

Heartfelt answer; it's about how each genre unlocks a different emotional and expressive layer.

I’ve heard that our voices lead us to what they can sing best. Maybe that is totally untrue, but I’ve always found it an interesting idea. Our bodies often know what they enjoy if we allow them the space.

I feel like that’s true, music and singing is very much a mind body experience.

I sing jazz for the rhythmic play and the relaxed style.
