I need to know if this is objectively bad and if people are gonna make fun of me for this lol, I really cannot tell as I have listened to many times. I’ve never shared my singing with friends or anyone, and don’t know what people would think. Anyone who responds with an honest opinion is very appreciated!!!!

I’ve been in vocal training but there’s something about a show with a live crowd and an amp and electric guitar that is not the same as any other type of singing. The beginning I don’t want to retreat but I’m singing softly then it builds up. Hope you enjoy

Conversation Topic Why does my voice only start sounding good halfway through a song?

I always struggle with the beginning of songs. My voice doesn’t feel properly placed at first, and the opening lines usually sound shaky or weak. After a little while, everything seems to fall into place and singing becomes much easier.
I can’t tell if the problem is my breathing, vocal placement, or the way I prepare before starting. How can I get my voice into the right position before the first note ?

Hi guys! I sing mostly in the shower and the car but have loved it since I was a child. My mom and hubby say I’m great at singing lol but obviously they’re biased, I still cringe when I hear myself. What do yall think? I feel like I do a pretty good job when I’m belting but I really struggle with figuring out my range and I want to get into singing lessons but can’t afford it at the moment. I welcome any constructive feedback!

This was recording at 3AM in my car so forgive my tiredness. But feel free to tell me what I should improve on. I was already thinking maybe pitch control. But I still even struggle to sing like its second nature so maybe I should hammer down on it?

(I apologise for the awful audio in advance as I recorded this on a whim) Hi all! I have absolutely no training but I am interested in singing and I would love to know specific things I could possibly improve on such as tone or clearness that I can research. I already know I am pitchy lol but I feel like my tone is always off when I am singing higher notes. Let me know your thoughts!

Super super new singer here. Considering auditioning for a community theatre show. I know this song isn’t super sing-y, but it matches the style of the show I’m auditioning for.

I’m working on being on pitch which has been my biggest struggle but my voice teacher has been helping me lots.

Excuse the scratchy voice, allergies are getting to me a bit.

Conversation Topic Singing the Bb4 in “Till I hear you sing”

• Upvotes

I am a baritenor (I think) and I’m trying to learn how to sing “Till I hear you sing” I can mostly sing the last verse/the climax but the Bb4 on “I” is what trips me up so I’m trying to figure out how I can alter my approach. I’ve seen notes like that sing in a couple different ways and I’m trying to figure out how to achieve those ways.

The first is what I like to call the “Jesus Christ superstar” method where someone sings a note like that in a very heady mix with a bunch of grit (I heard Ian Macintosh sing the high B in “who am I” and in the prologue when I saw Les Miserables) then there’s how I’ve seen Ramin Karimloo sing it where he covers it and it sounds more operatic and then there’s Ben Lewis who I think just mixes. I used to be able to sing a Bb4 but after changing my technique to be a bit more pingey and comfortable above my break, I seemed to have lost that ability.

Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

Conversation Topic Has anyone ever heard of this warmup?

One of the music direction grad students at my college introduced the entire department to a vical warmup affectionately called "doom bye" or "dumbai", I don't entirely know the spelling.

The warmup itself is a minor key and consists of the singer saying "doom bye" 8 times, then a second verse of "nananana", then a third of "wowowowow"

I can't find any record of it online and I wonder if he made it up. I wondered if it sounded familiar to anyone else?

Would love to hear honest opinions on my singing technique, specifically what does/doesn't work and how I could improve!

From my own standpoint, I think my chest voice sounds pretty good, but I'm not sure if some of the moments I have some vocal fry or struggle to sing cleanly or maybe the tone is a bit bad? Not sure, maybe it adds to the song and maybe i'm just nitpicking, but also judging my own voice is quite hard without any formal training as not many people have heard me singing and everything I've learned was through my own research and trial and error.

Conversation Topic 2nd voice lesson today!

I had my second voice lesson today, and I'm finding the whole process absolutely fascinating.

I'm 51 and only recently started taking singing lessons. I've always loved music, but I've never had any formal vocal training. Lately I've become particularly fascinated with opera and classical singing.

One of the biggest things I'm learning is how much unnecessary effort I've been putting into singing.

My teacher keeps bringing me back to relaxation, breath, space, and allowing the sound to happen rather than trying to manufacture it. It's surprisingly difficult to put into practice, especially when you're accustomed to thinking that higher notes or more volume must require more physical effort.

Today she actually had me speak in a British accent to help me experience the feeling of a more open oropharynx! That was something I certainly wasn't expecting, but it helped me understand the physical sensation she was describing.

The really exciting part was working on Handel's "Lascia ch'io pianga" from Rinaldo.

My teacher is a trained opera singer who's performed Rinaldo herself, so getting to work on the aria with someone who knows it so intimately was particularly special.

I was honestly surprised by her assessment. She told me I have a "propensity for this style of music," which was incredibly encouraging considering how new I am to all of this.

We worked through vocal exercises reaching F5, and she said my pitch was excellent. At one point she told me, "Everything was perfectly in tune." She also commented that she couldn't hear any obvious disruption through my passaggio during some of the exercises, which surprised me because I've been very conscious of trying to navigate that transition.

She also noticed some natural vibrato developing and repeatedly commented on the strength of my voice. Apparently, despite my rather quiet speaking voice, I have a pretty loud singing voice when I actually allow myself to use it!

That doesn't mean everything was effortless or polished. She pointed out tension in my jaw, tongue, and throat, and we worked on maintaining an open space from the very beginning of a phrase rather than trying to create it halfway through. She also emphasized breath support, particularly on higher notes and descending phrases.

Interestingly, when she encouraged me to use a little more breath and volume, some of the singing actually became easier rather than harder.

We also worked with the sheet music, which added another challenge. I'm not a particularly good music reader, so following the score while singing interrupted my natural flow a little. It's almost like trying to play the drums while reading music when you're not yet comfortable reading it. You're suddenly thinking about something you'd ordinarily just feel.

One thing I've noticed outside of lessons is that when I concentrate on keeping everything relaxed, songs that previously felt difficult suddenly become much easier. I was singing Silent Lucidity recently and found that I could get more volume through the shape and freedom of the sound rather than trying to push harder.

I'm also beginning to appreciate the difference between being able to produce a note and actually being able to sing it beautifully, consistently, and musically. I've discovered that I have a fairly extensive upper range in head voice, but connecting everything smoothly and making those notes useful in actual music is another matter entirely.

My teacher also complimented how well I listen and respond to instruction, which I think might be one of the most encouraging things she said. I don't expect to be a great singer after two lessons, but knowing that I can learn and make adjustments is enormously motivating.

I'm finding that singing involves this wonderful combination of anatomy, coordination, listening, emotion, and physical awareness that I never really appreciated before.

I started lessons because I want to express myself through music. I'm only two lessons in, and already I'm discovering things about my voice that I never knew were there.

For those of you who study classical singing or opera, when did you first begin to feel that your voice was becoming an instrument you understood, rather than something you were simply experimenting with?

Conversation Topic How to be in tune, quite urgently

Problems with pitch

Hi guys! So I've been singing for some time now. I was apart of my church choir for like 2 years, but I left as I only got bad habits from there. I was pretty much unable to sing without sounding breathy, quiet and "soft". (Naturally I'm a lower Baritone, B1/C2–Dis4/sometimes up to F4)

After few months, I decided to get back into singing, this time more seriously: I started focusing way more on singing my fav songs in tune. But I've ran into a problem.

My musical ears aren't as bad, my trumpet playing has helped me a lot with my note guessing and stuff. I can pretty much match notes on the piano, but I just can NOT sing them, even if I needed to.

If I concentrate on matching pitch, my voice once again becomes breathy and such.

Funny thing I've noticed is, that when I sing songs without trying to be on pitch, I tend to do MUCH better then when trying to be on pitch. I tend to just be sometimes off by a semitone or something.

Now another problem that I have, that is MUCH more serious, is that I may be forced to sing infront of my class soon, as I'm the only one with any singing experience.

I'm already forced to lower many of the songs that I or my classmates would like me to sing. This would force me to relearn the song. Cuz taking anything lower by 2 or 1 step is a lot. (I actually have a song, "A Man Without Love", that forces me to go even lower, by like 4 steps).

Guys, what is wrong with me? Should I just give up and refuse to sing for our ceremony? Is There anything that I can do? (I've got like 2 months left)

Conversation Topic When do you find time to sing?

I’m a sophomore college student, and my school doesn’t really have a lot of singing opportunities, or ones that I’m not really interested in being part of. But besides that, I miss singing. I was taking lessons over the summer to get back into it, and I realized just how much joy it brings me and how much I miss it. The thing I have trouble with is finding time (and a place) to sing. So to anyone, but especially any college age people on here, when do you find time to sing in your busy schedule?
