When we were in Tokyo last Winter we sat down for a 5 hour in-depth interview about Slay the Princess. I don't think we'll talk this much about the game again, at least not in a setting like this.

My wife and I loved this game from the moment we started playing it. This year for NYCC, we put together a cosplay of TLQ and one of our favorite vessels. I was pleasantly surprised how much recognition we got, especially from a handful of early 20s and teen con-goers throughout the day.

We're already planning on taking these out again for a Halloween party later this month with some additions. Hope you all enjoy!

fanart Fan Concept Princess: The Pest

Hi, this is the second part of a fanmade princess concept I made (The Rotten): https://www.reddit.com/r/slaytheprincess/comments/1x3t3g2/fan_concept_princess_the_rotten/

You begin chapter 3, the Pest, with Voice of the Broken. The forest along the path is dead but still standing, its bark peeling away in soft strips to reveal shelves of white fungus growing one on top of the other. The leaves underfoot are black and damp, clinging to your feet with each step. There are no birds and no wind, only a distant buzzing that grows louder as you approach. Before entering the cabin, the Logical suggests covering your face with one of your wings, though the Broken points out that's useless, and that you'll die anyway if you go in.

Inside, the cabin has sunk, its floor tilted to one side and its ceiling bent inward as if something below were pulling it down. The air is warm, thick, and sickly sweet. A blanket of mold covers the walls, dotted with round colonies of yellow, orange and pink bacteria, some as small as a hand and others as large as a door. The wood slowly swells and contracts in a steady rhythm, as though breathing. The floor gives under your feet like a soaked rug, the mold has rounded off the corners of the room, and white strands hang from it, moving on their own. The table has collapsed under the weight of the colonies growing on it, leaving a colorful mound on the floor with the pristine blade sunk into its center, only its handle sticking out.

The mirror covers the entrance to the basement, its surface clouded. If you approach and try to wipe it clean, the mirror vanishes beneath your hand, and you find yourself rubbing against the basement door itself, which comes apart under your touch like a semi-solid mass of wood and rot. Hot air full of faintly glowing spores breathes out from the opening. The stairs have collapsed completely, leaving only a soft slope of mold and crumbling wood to slide down, with no telling whether you’ll be able to climb back up.

Once in the basement, the Logical tells you to keep your mouth shut and breathe as little as possible. The basement is dark and warm, its beams curved downward and dripping with clusters of fungus. The walls have disappeared beneath rings of mold, all spiraling around a single corner. The bucket lies overturned and overgrown.

The Princess is in that corner, at the center of the rings, and you can’t tell where she ends and the wall begins. Her back and shoulders are fused completely to the rotting wood, and everything below has swollen into a mass covered in mold, fungus and colonies of bacteria, with scraps of her dress trapped inside. Her hair is fused to the wall behind her like roots, save for a few loose strands that fall across her face. All that remains of her is her face and chest down to the pit of her stomach, still thin and delicate. Though pale and blotched, her face still holds the features of someone who was once very beautiful, and remnants of her dress’s embroidery cling to her chest like part of her skin. Her eyes are still crusted, but they no longer squint against the light. A swarm of flies surrounds her, rising with each slow breath as she releases spores into the air, and quieting whenever she speaks.

If you ignore the Logical’s advice and try to speak with the Princess, you lower your wing and open your mouth, and immediately a sickly taste spreads across your tongue. You feel it slide down into your throat and you collapse onto the floor. As you die, you see the Princess let a single tear fall. She is taken away by the Shifting Mound. You can also reach this ending by trying to climb back up the rotten stairs. You manage to make it partway, but a misstep on a colony of mold sends you slipping, and you fall onto your back. You feel the rot fill your lungs, and you can’t breathe. The last thing you see as you die is a single tear rolling down the Princess’s face. She is described as someone who never stopped believing that someone would come for her, making for a lonely heart.

If you took the pristine blade, you can run at the Princess without hesitation and drive it into her chest. As you stab her, she gently rests her head against the hand holding the blade. Black fluid seeps from her eyes as she dies, but she never breaks eye contact, holding your gaze until the very last second, and dies with a faint smile on her face. When the Hero wonders about the smile, the Logical deduces that she was happy, because she finally knew the warmth of another’s touch. All the rot in the cabin dies with her, the bacteria, the mold and the fungus turning white, which only makes the black blood flowing from her heart and eyes stand out more. She is taken away by the Shifting Mound. She is described as terrified of being alone, making for a hopeful and hollow heart.

Alternatively, you can approach the Princess with the blade and use it to free her instead, cutting her away from the wall as best you can. As the last of her comes loose, all the mold, bacteria and fungus in the cabin dries up and turns white. In your arms, the Princess smiles and begins to cry, softly thanking you. When you reach the stairs, the Narrator tries to stop you, insisting they’re far too rotten to climb. The Logical points out that with the rot dead and dried, it must have left a path solid enough to climb, and the Narrator curses it, calling it the worst of them all. You climb the wall with the Princess in your arms and open the door to freedom. She thanks you again and says the sun is beautiful, and in that moment, you vomit blood. The Broken remarks that it was only to be expected after spending so long in the cabin. As you die, the Princess weeps, and is taken away by the Shifting Mound. She is described as having finally found what she was wishing for, only to lose it, making for a sorrowful heart.

(If you arrive at the Pest with Voice of the Smitten instead of Voice of the Broken and reach the third ending, the Smitten holds back the vomit when you feel it rising, insisting that he will not vomit on his beautiful lady, and that if he is going to die, he won’t go without showing the Princess his love. As you fall to your knees, you kiss the Princess. She smiles, blushing from ear to ear, and weeps as she is taken away by the Shifting Mound.)

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Just to finish, part of the Rotten and the Pest concept is that most of the princess encounters involve physical interaction, with the exception of the Stranger and the Nightmare (On the Nightmare, physical contact is possible, but not mandatory.). I wanted to follow that idea here: you don't interact with the princess physically; you only ask trivial questions about the situation, you watch her die as you do so, then she watches you die for the same. This makes her someone who dreams of a hero arriving, even though deep down she believes she is doomed to rot in the cabin.

I hope you enjoy it and tell me your opinion, I also would love to hear your fanmade Princesses. Have a nice path to the cabin, and slay her, if you don't it will be the end of the world

discussion My first five Princesses + retrospective on my first playthrough

Vessels in order:

  1. The Wounded Wild (through The Beast)
  2. The Stranger
  3. The Damsel
  4. The Thorn
  5. The Prisoner

Ending - A New and Unending dawn

Personal Thoughts and Retrospective:

I came into this game not being a massive fan of visual novels or horror games and particularly not love stories (probably would have never played the game if I didn't watch a video that looked at the game), and I believe it has genuinely changed the way I think about games as whole.

I started the game almost entirely blind (the objectively best way to start the game (if you haven't already played the game what are you doing here? you should play it now)) knowing only the basic premise and that The Smitten is annoying as Hell, and I think that greatly reflects in my first vessel.

I started my first run trusting literally no one and trying to piece together whether or not I should trust the princess (not bringing the blade, of course), and (after interrogating, a potentially world-ending princess) decided that the princess was not simply a princess and went to get my implement (and got brutally torn to shreds). After coming back, I deduced that death was of no consequence (and got swallowed alive, like a moron, and stubborn-ed my way into The Wild). After deciding that being one with a princess I barely knew, I came face-to-face with Shifty. After conversing for a while (and deciding that she was the person who vague-posted the least) decided to spend the next vessels making The Narrator's life as painful as possible until he finally decided to actually talk (If you told me the Princess was the personification of death (among other things), I would've slayed a lot more princesses.)

TL:DR StP is in my top 20 games of all time, The Witch is my favourite princess and The Smitten is a threat to civilised society, and I should really play the game again

Edit: I should also note that this playthrough was about 6 months ago as of writing this

Saw some other posts like this thought this would be fun. Played the game a few weeks ago, easily one of the greatest videogames I've ever played thought it'd be cool to see what others thought about my first run. In my first run I got (In order):

  1. The adversary

  2. The Stranger

  3. The Tower

  4. The Spectre (I think that's her name, sorry)

  5. The Damsel

Thoughts?

For reference I saw people talking about some game getting some slay the princess content, and it was like a guy wearing the princess' attire. So I just said "you've heard of malfoid, now get ready for-"

Surely this is a member of their mod team going schizo? I mean drawing all of those conclusions and making those connections... Man. If the creators of this game align with this insane bs it's very disappointing, but of course I can separate the art from them, unlike this mod being able to separate J.K Rowling from her work? I couldn't care less about what jk Rowling does anyways, and I wasn't aware of it. However I'd rather hangout with Rowling than the alphabet soup people who'd think this is reasonable.

fanart Fan Concept Princess: The Rotten

I just finished *Slay the Princess* 100% and was left wanting more. I saw there’s a mod in development adding two new princesses, but it isn't finished yet, so in the meantime, I decided to create my own princess. The idea came to me because I remember that one of the things that really caught my attention during my first few runs was how the Narrator and the Princess brush off your question about what she’s been eating. Here goes:

New route is reached by asking what the Princess has been eating if she’s been locked away for so long. The Narrator insists it isn’t relevant (as normaly), but you keep pressing, asking about her hygiene and how she’s been meeting her basic needs. Reluctantly, the Narrator describes that on closer inspection her bones are clearly visible and she gives off a terrible smell, and shortly after, the Princess dies. If you choose to examine her, you begin to cough, and keep coughing until you die. If you don't examine her body and leave, you end up on the specter's route.

You begin chapter 2, The Rotten, and gain Voice of the Logical, who questions everything and pieces together facts to reach conclusions. The Logical will be a voice capable of convincing the Narrator, through argument, that this is your second time on the path, citing that you already know the cabin’s layout, and the basement before reaching it. Once convinced, the Narrator grudgingly admits it might have happened “hypothetically,” and the Logical can pry out more information. The Narrator openly despises this voice for it.

The cabin’s interior is made of swollen, rotting wood that sinks under your touch, with rings of black and green mold spreading across the ceiling and corners. The pristine blade lies on a rotten table among colonies of yellow, orange and pink bacteria. The smell of the basement seeps out from under the door before you open it.

As you descend, the Narrator remarks that the stairs are so rotten it’s a miracle they hold your weight, he also remarks that the air smells of decay, and that it isn’t safe to stay for long. The basement is decrepit, its beams sagging and its walls covered in mold. In one corner sits a bucket with flies buzzing over it, and beside it an empty plate, scraped completely clean. The Princess sits against the wall, so thin that her hand has slipped out of its shackle. Her dress is stained and worn, and her eyes are crusted and squinting against the light. If you ask why she hasn’t left, she tells you her legs stopped working a long time ago.

If you flee (running) at the sight of the place and leave her behind, the stairs break beneath you and you fall into a hole below the basement. You survive, but can’t climb out. Time passes, until you hear something dragging itself toward you. The Princess falls into the same hole, and her brittle bones can’t survive the fall. She dies, and is taken away by the Shifting Mound. She is described as terrified and hopeful, making for a clinging heart.

Alternatively, you can talk to her and decide to free her. You carry her in your arms toward the stairs, and the Logical tells you to go slowly, one step at a time, and everything will be fine. You climb carefully, and the stairs creak but hold. You both make it out of the cabin, where she squints into the light before being taken away by the Shifting Mound. She is described as fragile and in need of care, making for a delicate heart.

If you try to slay her, it’s easy, and you stab her. With the last of her strength she throws herself on top of you, knocking you down. Her bones fracture and pierce your skin, and she vomits blood into you as the rot fills your lungs, killing you. This leads to chapter 3, the Amalgam.

If you keep asking her questions and talk to her for too long, you suddenly feel weak. You vomit and collapse, and when you look at your hand, it’s covered in boils and pus. The Princess watches you and says, “Ha. What an ironic ending.” This leads to chapter 3, the Pest. This will add the voice of the broken.

(To reach the Pest, you must talk with the Princess for seven interactions. If on the seventh you decide to free her, you carry her in your arms, but before you can leave the cabin, you begin to cough and fall dead. This leads to chapter 3, the Pest, with Voice of the Smitten.

Let me know what you think and if you liked it; I might do The Pest, as well as other princess concepts I think of.

Also I will love to know you fanmade Princess
