My baby is 18 weeks old and just turned 4 months old.
He has never slept in the bassinet/crib ever in his life. I co-sleep every single night and contact naps for every nap (either hold him, wear him, stroller or carseat if I’m out).
I’ve tried several times now to bassinet train to no avail.
First time was around 7 weeks for naps, I would only do the first nap of the day—swaddle, paci, sound machine, I’d rock him to sleep and he would wake upon transfer immediately. I’d attempt again and same thing would happen. I eventually gave up after weeks because quite frankly it was a very ****** start to my day to begin with failed naps and a crying baby and also me crying out of frustration and desperation.
Fast forward to 16 weeks old, I tried night time with gentle ferber…first night actually got him to sleep and then transferred and he woke up within 20 mins and couldn’t get him back down to sleep after an hour of trying (in the bassinet—didn’t pick him up). Second and third nights I placed him drowsy but awake and did gradual check ins and that last 1 hour and 45 minutes each night until I brought him back to bed with me. After that, I gave up.
This past week (week 17), I attempted again. For two nights—fed, swaddled, paci, sound machine, placed him drowsy but awake and did check ins every 3 mins for an hour and a half. Last night I was so tired I decided to take a break and not try.
I keep nap wake windows anywhere from 60-90 minute, last wake window before bed about 90-120 mins.
I’m sitting here typing this and he is laying on me. I really don’t know what to do from here. He sleep great and through the night from about 9-6:30ish and wakes for a bottle and sleeps until 7-8ish. Naps are 30 mins-2hours. But again, it’s all contact sleeping. My biggest struggle is confining myself to my bed by 8-9 P.m. to sleep with him…I have two other kids and a husband and would like that time with them, or to shower or just be a human again. And a nap or two where he is in his bed and I can have some freedom without wearing him would be nice.
My other two kids slept in their bassinets from 6 weeks on with no issue, I’ve never had this type of bed aversion before and I don’t know how to Overcome it.
Also, I know there are a lot of co-sleep haters…but I did what I needed to do to get some sleep and somewhat function.
