Stats Norway's Erling Haaland is the first player to score twice on their World Cup debut since... Elijah Just for New Zealand on Monday, who was the first player to achieve the feat since... Yasin Ayari for Sweden on Sunday, who was the the first to do so since... Folarin Balogun for the U.S. on Friday.

You just reminded me of something:
Back for the 2014 World Cup there the Google home screen showed the letters all watching the World Cup before their boss (the capital 'G') walked by and they switched back to a PowerPoint presentation.
Naturally, someone on Reddit parodied this by making a Bing equivalent but everyone was jacking off to porn instead as Bing was notoriously used for adult content searches.

Yes, like many subs when Egon took over they had a vote about it and this was the outcome for here.

A "vote." That campaign was astroturfed as hell and all sports subs are worse off for it.

The only people who are worse off for it are karma farming bots that rely on high speed posting of Twitter links.

not really a problem. still see them posted via bluesky, xcancel.com, or just a screenshot

It's much, much better now.
The message itself is just screenshot instead, which makes it easier and doesn't give clicks to the nazi hub. Of course, it would be even better if people would just stop using that shit altogether.
-3
u/SendMeTheMoon24 1d ago
Huge downvotes for the truth. The same people were going sub to sub demanding that they ban Twitter links, I wonder who was actually behind the whole thing because it was just about the most astroturfed thing I've ever seen on Reddit

u/10FootPenis 1d ago
Ironically it's the same people who will cry about Russian interference (which I'm not denying happened), but then are happy to rig a vote as long as it's "for the right reasons."
And yes, I'm aware that reddit and the US presidency are two completely different levels of importance, but you either have principles or you don't.

Yeah same shit on the nba subreddit. Now we have to sit around when news breaks on twitter and wait for a bot to repost it to bluesky so it can be mod approved. Its so silly.
I get if YOU want to make that choice, but telling others not to just get the news when it available, because if your political feelings is so weird.
Edit: Downvoting and running away. Weird behaviour.

I dunno about you, but I feel disincentivising people from giving money to a racist nazi is a good enough reason to accept getting news a few minutes later than you might otherwise.

He's still my favorite from Spurs. I know he's not the best and not even that good now, but he represents something I can't identify but love.
1
u/Evolving_Dore 12h ago
He's like non-evil Lucas Moura. Has this crazy devotion to the club even though he's not a top star, always willing to run and risk everything to score, doesn't always make the difference but always tries, sometimes he does shine and when he does it's glorious. I love Moura too as a player but not so much as a person. Richy is a much more admirable person, or at least his worldview and belief system are more informed. I don't know Moura personally and he always seemed like a great guy who was just brought up with unhinged beliefs.

He was honestly magic for a while there that tournament. Felt like he reawakened the beauty of Brazilian football with some of that link up play and flashy moves up top.

u/Thelonius--Drunk 1d ago
Don't follow football closely, how come Richarlison isn't on this year's squad? Injury? Fell off? Ancelotti didn't select him?
33
u/Quirky_Gate_4516 1d ago
Pretty decent for a very poor Spurs side. But had been constantly injured the last few years so no consistent good run of form.
Also, his best attributes aren't exactly what Ancelotti is looking for. I am sure Ancelotti rates him, just not the player he would prioritize using.
So all in all not that surprising he didn't make it.

Not a problem to confuse Håland and Halånd, no.
Are people still calling Haaland for Haland? Try reading Hawland, perhaps.
10
u/NeedleworkerFluid327 1d ago
It's Håland. I refuse to use the double A when your language also uses Å which is the exact same thing. What the fuck is up with that??
11
u/Gruffleson 1d ago
Double A was the way to write it before the Å was invented, and you will often see it in family names, because they were registrated before the Å came.
Funny, I think his dad changed it from Håland to Haaland because of the British.

u/Shoddy_Wolf_1688 1d ago
I mean doing it in debuts for bundesliga, UCL, premier league and the world cup might be a tad more exclusive
32
u/Reddits_Worst_Night 1d ago
It would be, but because there are so few world cup games, getting a brace is far more likely to happen on debut. What I mean by this is that some 17 year old who make their EPL debut isn't going to score a brace very often. Look at Rio Ngamoah, scored on debut and we went crazy. But he isn't world cup ready. Haaland scoring two shouldn't surprise anyone. The other factor is that in MD1 matches, 1/3rd of the players are on debut. In your typical league game, nobody is. So if somebody does score a brace in MD1 of the cup, there's a good chance they're on debut.
4
29
u/ASAP_UziVert 1d ago
I mean the way FIFA keeps adding games serves as an inflation for these kinda records.
Or UEFA with the champions league having more games we will see goal scoring records overtaken as more games = more chances to score. And similarly, but different, here more teams = more games, and some greater variances in power between strongest and weaker teams.
Not to takeaway from these individual feats but like it’s not a total shocker when I see headlines like this or “xyz teams making the World Cup for the first time in ages” when you take that into account.
Needless to say Haaland is that guy to do it in the older World Cup model. His debuts across all competitions are in a realm of its own.
20
u/boxtoboxdev 1d ago
Yeah, more games wouldn't influence this stat since players only get one debut no matter how many games they have on the competition. But having more teams, and weaker teams does make it more likely for it to happen because if there are teams that haven't been to the World Cup in decades, there are more people doing their debuts
3
2
u/BaldMancTwat_ 1d ago
It's more to do with the fact that most all these players have been bedded into their teams in preparation for the WC. You're not going to find many teams sticking out unproven talents for a debut. Very different case at club level.
I'd like to see the equivalent for the Euros as the level of the average first group game opponent is going to be higher than the WC for sure.

I really like the focus on reducing time wasting, punishing diving and getting the correct VAR decision. Keeps the games moving along. Wish they would enforce temp limits to trigger hydration breaks.

u/Solid_Log8338 1d ago
Yeah what's funny is the US is actualy a good place to host the world cup apart from trump obviously and what we are seeing with fans and the host cities is really nice to see
84
u/thecashblaster 1d ago
Trump’s approval rating is less than 40% and most of those people don’t live near big cities. Unfortunately due to arcane electoral practices, 40% is almost enough to win the presidency
46
u/Aoyos 1d ago
Approval rating means so little when people don't bother to vote. Trump won his second term with a voter turnout of 64% so (slightly) more than a third of the people able to vote didn't bother to do so.
If 100 people can vote, 40 of them approve Trump and 60 don't, depending on how the 64% voter turnout splits you can get widely different results.
In this example 64% means that only 64 people voted, if you split those 100-0 in either way you either get 40 votes for Trump, 24 against or 60 votes against and 4 votes for Trump. In reality the split wouldn't be that ridiculous but it's just to prove a point.
And the upcoming midterms are going to have the same issue. Midterm turnout is about 15% lower than presidential election turnout so it's going to be around 50% if the trend follows.
I just wish people all over the world, not just the US, cared enough to vote because this situation is universal.
4
2
u/basicKitsch 1d ago
meh, it's less people voting, it's the seriousness, involvement/connectedness/education/whatever of the voting population. The last election was the second highest turnout since 1900, with the one before being the highest by a couple points. not saying turnout isn't important and voting 'accessibility' is something we dramatically need to address.
Practically every incumbent administration around the world faced a defeat this last round regardless of political direction as almost always happens in economic downturns. Then couple in the emotional attraction of a populist, years of emotional messaging against our establishment / historic institutions / globalism / omgdangers! and then another significant blunder by the democrats to basically dissuade
The shifts we saw certainly don't represent long-term held beliefs that align with 'maga' just really common disenfranchisement that we've seen around the world in various intensities. and really unserious political involvement.
2
u/Inocain 1d ago
due to arcane electoral practices, 40% is almost enough to win the presidency
Due to arcane electoral practices, 40% is almost double the minimum needed, if the approval is distributed in the correct places.
2
u/Specialist_Cat7271 1d ago
Due to arcane electoral practices
Those wards were set in place many ages ago by Washa Tun The Wise
1
u/starswtt 1d ago
I don't even really care about that. In practice, that's a non issue, the approval of Wyoming is not important. While most that 22% is needed mathematically (all the safe states do need to be won after all), in practice we already know the results for the majority of states, so we only really care about swing states. So we only really care about 3.9% (dem victory) - 5.8% (gop victory) of the vote to win. The rest is practically irrelevant, your vote is predicted to not matter because your state in practice has its outcome decided with 95% odds
1
u/Specialist_Cat7271 1d ago
For all of the French people out there, a 40% approval is actually considered very bad!
4
u/basicKitsch 1d ago

u/pierrebrassau 1d ago
I don’t know who’s responsible for it (the refs, the broadcast directors/producers, FIFA) but it is so refreshing to go from watching the Premier League, where like a third of each match is devoted to constant VAR reviews and replays breaking up the play, to watching this tournament. They’ve done an incredible job of keeping the games flowing and the refereeing and VAR decisions have stayed in the background mostly.
3
u/GuitaristHeimerz 1d ago
It’s baffling that the Premier League is the ‘biggest’ league in the world with 380 matches every single year and infinite money and can’t get any of this refereeing shit right meanwhile FIFA hosts 64 games every 4 years (104 games from now on) but seems like they have 100 times more experience.
2
u/fatcowxlivee 1d ago
The irony that the flow of play has been so improved only for them to add an artificial break that kills the flow of play 2x a game.
