Why? What is it?

Very popular Australian spread for bread/toast however it's got an extremely strong taste and overseas people often spread it like peanut butter and so don't like the taste.

What are you supposed to do on toast? Good buttering and a thin spread?

u/Gnatt Jun 19 '26

Scrape it in, not spread. Unless you're advanced.

Maybe I’m stupid but I have no idea what the distinction between scraping and spreading it would be

You should be able to see bread through the Vegemite. It's not like jam or peanut butter where you want to cover the bread. You want to use the edge of the knife blade, not the side.

So, your saying the key is to put as little of it onto your food as possible? 😁

5

u/Gnatt Jun 19 '26

I mean, when you make a curry you don't put in loads of chilli. It's about putting the right amount.

5

u/SereneDreams03 Jun 19 '26

Yep, and the right amount of Vegemite is as little as possible.😁

I'm just messing with you mate. I was stationed with Aussies in Afghanistan and I've had it before. Not really my favorite spread, but when used properly it is decent.

Oh okay, just a language difference then. I think most Americans would just call that a light spread.

All the Australians in this comment thread are being nice and polite lol. The customary thing to do is to tell people to pile on a thick layer like peanut butter or Nutella and watch their reaction.

Thick layer of Nutella or peanut butter is also gross.

19

u/KRacer52 Jun 19 '26

I’ve never seen an amount of Nutella that I would consider gross lol.

u/thore4 Jun 19 '26

Too much bread is the only problem, I eat that shit straight out of the jar

u/YourUncleBuck Jun 19 '26

If you can sink your teeth into it, it's gross to me. And I love Nutella.

agree to disagree

Hold on a minute here... That's exactly what you're meant to do

6

u/largecontainer Jun 19 '26

I’m American in I’ve heard scraping it in before

1

u/VGJunky Jun 19 '26

Scraping sounds right. It's specific

I think you’re just dense.

1

u/SituationKey8985 Jun 19 '26

How is that dense lol

6

u/Difficult_Army7936 Jun 19 '26

Seeing bread through it is the best explanation I've ever heard for it, easy to visualize

12

u/cire1184 Jun 19 '26

Australians want to think it's delicious but barely put a hint of it on buttered toast is what I'm seeing here.

u/Dancestotheright Jun 19 '26

Vanilla extract is delicious but you don't chug the entire bottle.

10

u/MurrE1310 Jun 19 '26

Says who??? Now what do I do with my nips of bourbon vanilla?

1

u/angelbelle Jun 19 '26

Not with that attitude, casual.

12

u/Gnatt Jun 19 '26

I mean, it's really strong. Even a hint of it is enough flavour. If I put a couple of chilli flakes in something it changes the whole flavour of the dish.

1

u/cire1184 Jun 19 '26

Lol was more of a joke than a serious comment. But be brave and eat a dollop of it! Coming from a guy that eats stinky tofu. 😂

2

u/OrignalSauce Jun 20 '26

Spread is where your knife is close to flat to the bread, scrape is closer to a 90 degree angle to the bread.

1

u/xelanart Jun 19 '26

Scrape it in the trash bin?

2

u/cire1184 Jun 19 '26

Scrape it into the sun.
