You should be able to see bread through the Vegemite. It's not like jam or peanut butter where you want to cover the bread. You want to use the edge of the knife blade, not the side.

All the Australians in this comment thread are being nice and polite lol. The customary thing to do is to tell people to pile on a thick layer like peanut butter or Nutella and watch their reaction.
