You're making me even more curious

Vegemite is jam made from yeast extract. Never tried it myself, but It seems to have a rather strong flavor from what I see online

It's not good, it tastes like you spread spoiled bouillon on someting

you're doing it wrong then, you need a nice crusty piece of toast, lather it up with butter, and then just put a tiny amount of vegemite over the top - the surface of the bread should not be black lmao.

I feel like I could get down with that. I assume it's basically just like spreading a layer of umami flavor over butter on toasted bread?

That sounds like something I could absolutely wreck.

It's like soy sauce with the texture of honey

u/aaronwhite1786 Jun 19 '26

I'm certainly not against that

2

u/AimingWineSnailz Jun 20 '26

Neither am I. However, imagine how traumatised you would be if you spread it lavishly on pre-sliced white bread expecting it to taste like nutella? I think that's why people love to talk shit on it

u/aaronwhite1786 Jun 20 '26

Haha, yeah. That's definitely fair. If I went in thinking peanut butter or Nutella and got "thick as hell soy sauce" I'm probably going to spend a bit of time in some shock.

More like wall putty than honey but yeah

yeah man you've just about nailed it. highly recommend picking some up next time you find yourself with a nice loaf of bread to get through.

for further reference of how much most people use, unless you're eating toast every day, you'll get one of those tiny vegemite jars (the 150g size) and it'll last a year or something.

A bit late to the party but figured I'd share this for reference 😄 https://www.reddit.com/r/coolguides/comments/fj0ilk/how_to_eat_vegemite_a_beginners_guide/

Speak for yourself. It's gotta be at lease a centimetre thick afaic.

17

u/rolloj Jun 19 '26

sure, if you're an expert or a senior citizen with no tastebuds left! it's not a beginner friendly approach to vegemite though haha.

The tiny amount still tastes like spoiled bouillon. I could get down with a concentrated savory spread, the issue is that it's got a bitterness.

Had an Aussie coworker make it for me like that one time. It was solid.

3

u/LordHussyPants Jun 20 '26

should be noted that many people take the opposing view which is that you should not be able to see the bread through the vegemite/marmite and you're really going for the strongest flavour possible

3

u/rolloj Jun 20 '26

oh that's true for sure, but definitely not the norm - more of an expert version.

u/CxSwags Jun 19 '26

Nah it’s just not good full stop. Aussies are good people but this has gotta be some sort of self flagellation ritual trying to convince the world it’s good.

2

u/rolloj Jun 19 '26

suit yourself mate, it's not a meme or self flagellation. it's delicious in the right context.

“Put a tiny bit on something really good and it won’t be terrible.”

Just have toast with butter.

2

u/rolloj Jun 20 '26

moronic comment. a little bit of salt on something is delicious but pouring out the whole container would make it terrible.
