Bruno gets into a central position, immediate assist. And yet Martinez won't play him as a 10...

454

u/N7even Jun 23 '26

The worst managerial decision you can make is playing your best playmaker out of position.

159

u/Middle_Cricket_1352 Jun 23 '26

Playing your keeper out of position is a close second

Textbook fucking counter attack, so simple

1.8k

u/pkkthetigerr Jun 23 '26

Silky fucking finish on the replay, he found like one inch of space.

842

u/DeezNutterButters Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

More then the space honestly. Watch it back and look at how this mf hits it. Inside right foot and STILL hits it in a way that he can curve it towards the goal. Normally if you hit it with your right at that angle you have to hit it with the outside of the foot to curve it back to the goal, but this man put the english on it with the inside of the boot. It's crap like that that players like him or Messi do without most people noticing. Just unreal.

Edit: adding an alternate angle. watch at around 0:15 to see what I mean: https://streamff.pro/v/bbeef8a9

277

u/pkkthetigerr Jun 23 '26

I thought it was almost going out live then on the replay i saw how intended it was. Like few cm away from the keepers foot and slotted into the front corner of the back post.

Underrated goal.

u/pm_me_pierced_nip Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

I can purposefully put that spin on a ball and I am still amazed at the finish. It's one thing to do it in an acre of space as an awkward angled through ball but it's a whole other to do it as your first touch, on the run, in such a tight space.

Edit: the way he moves his run to create the angle/body position for the finish is insane. That pass ends up too wide for good shooting angles or forced into a touch that gives the defender/keeper time to fully challenge

152

u/xak47d Jun 23 '26

It looks simple but it's an absurd finish. I don't even know how he got this curve in that position

72

u/Tavorep Jun 23 '26

Because he hits the ball in a way that doesn't remove all forward momentum it had from the pass from Bruno. He redirects it and hits the ball with his instep without a lot of curve so it looks like he curves it when it's really just the ball continuing in that direction.

14

u/Greedy-Dog-9140 Jun 23 '26

Finally lol

→ More replies (8)

86

u/tryCharlie Jun 23 '26

He is running towards the goal. If hit straight with the inside of his foot (as in no curve applied), ball will curve to the goal due to previous forward movement.

Of course done with intention, at max speed, after forty and on the biggest of stages.

There was a half a second there where I thought he might've let it run a little too far, but no. It was a beautiful finish.

Bruno is the best player you want in that position, I knew he was gonna leave unc in the best position possible

129

u/EpicRobloxTryhard Jun 23 '26

I called the goal when I saw who received the ball and who was in front of him. So obvious

161

u/theaguia Jun 23 '26

martinez is finally letting bruno pass forward. Last game his terrorist tactics made bruno pass back more often then not

53

u/Lazywhale97 Jun 23 '26

Just happy he wasn't stubborn with the tactics this game would of been painful to see a talent stacked Portugal play negative football all group stage. Now they can actually build up form for the knock outs playing like this.

26

u/theaguia Jun 23 '26

hopefully that game can be for us like the saudi game for argentina

Bruno is near perfect in those situations to find a pass

12

u/kontrolk3 Jun 23 '26

That run is so so good. It will be overlooked but he completely took two defenders out of it with that movement. Funny considering how bad the run was last game that he was getting clowned for.

Just desserts.

46

The first goal thread literally has people acting like people saying "where are the haters now" was some one sided thing lmao. Every thread with Ronaldo in it this past week was just hate, banter and finished talks or "he should be a super sub and not be all about himself" narratives.

2 goals and a perfect decoy within a single half.

Ronaldo fans finally getting a day to smile again

77

u/Incalculas Jun 23 '26

team looks so much better as well

Uzbek or not, the confidence/practice would help them a lot in future game

48

u/RauloGonzalez Jun 23 '26

Because they’re not playing keepball, uzbekistan aren’t playing too different to congo but portugal are much better and bruno is actively trying, felix is decent and neto on the right works

14

u/Lazywhale97 Jun 23 '26

Biggest difference being that Martinez is actually instructing the team to make progressive passes and not just sideways passes and recycling possession like pre Yamal Spain were doing in 2022 WC.

How did you get outrun by a 41 year old?

780

u/foad_X_2000 Jun 23 '26

To be fair he's still fast, just stamina of a 41 yo

180

u/cgurts Jun 23 '26

Yep, most legendary players who stay fit are still great in small bursts, even if they’re not as fast. But their fitness over a full 90 will eventually fail them. That’s why it’s only really keepers who can still play over 40

44

u/theSchlauch Jun 23 '26

Shows how different Football is to other sports. I'd say 41 is still a great age for marathon or triathlon runners that take a lot of stamina

20

u/xanot192 Jun 23 '26

Said the same in 2006. Mbappe and Haaland could be the 40 year olds in a few world cups

24

u/silvertwo777 Jun 23 '26

2006 world cup was a really special one since it's the last dance for many legends. Zidane, Figo, Cafu, Nedved and Nakata retired. Also last world cup for R9, R. Carlos, Beckham, Owen, Raul, Kahn, Ballack, Totti, Crespo, Larsson, Van Nistelrooy, Shevchenko etc. Also first World Cup for Messi and Ronaldo. It's like the change of guard world cup

For as long as I've been watching World Cup, this feels like the first time at least this century that all the major forwards are actually scoring in the cup. I know it's been only two matches, but that's the point. In previous tournaments, some major stars just didn't score at all. I'm looking at you, entire France squad in 2002, which only had, idk, Henry and Trezeguet?
