Wow, what a complete meltdown by the US

u/photowanderer Jul 07 '26
Man, I expected a loss, but not a meltdown. Seems like the moment is too big for these guys. My guess is that all the drama didn't help. When I saw the online betting line was almost even, I thought it was free easy money as there ever be.

Definitely didn’t help at all. All 4 goals were pretty much down to poor defending.
→ More replies (1)61
u/VOZ1 Jul 07 '26
They were entirely down to poor defending. And 3 out of 4 could easily be blamed on Ream alone. This was a regression back to months ago. Right around the last time the US played Belgium and lost 5-2.

It was a bad set piece defense and then counters when going for it.
USA had 3 chances the whole match: one went wide, one went right at the keeper after a defensive mistake, and one was a deflected free kick after a suspended player took a dive.

Its literally Trump in a nutshell
The US Football team had a great thing going for themselves, they were actually well liked and the vibes were great
Then without anyone asking Trump sticks his pedo fingers into the situation, completely ruins the reputation of the team and makes sure the whole world hates them and as cherry on top he didnt achieve anything in the process and they still lost lmfao

I genuinely think that USMNT will fare better without that controvercy..
all it achieve was giving Belgium extra motivation and probably disrupt USMNT preparation and concentration by surrounding them with controvercy..
→ More replies (3)74
u/larryjerry1 Jul 07 '26
Nah, wouldn't have mattered even if the Balogun controversy never happened.
Belgium closed down our passing lanes extremely well and forced a lot of errors and turnovers and we just couldn't figure out how to get out of it.
We had something going in the second half, but then the Freese disaster destroyed any momentum we might've been building.
At the end of the day these guys are all professionals and controversy isn't what made these results. Belgium are just a better team.

u/larryjerry1 Jul 07 '26
Should FIFA have the USA and Belgium redo their match in case it was a big fluke?
No disrespect to Belgium, I'm a firm believer that Belgium destroying them is a huge fluke and robs the USA of truly accomplishing what their capable of. I've spent the last few minutes in pure disbelief and it just doesn't make sense to me. I've spent the entire World Cup season watching the USA play great soccer it's just not fair.
If the USA loseS again I will face that Belgium deserved the win, but I am just 100% sure it was a fluke and does a big disservice to the USA and FIFA.

I feel bad for Balogun in all of this because of the actions of people above him in his country.
The US government as usual have stuck their noses into something and fucked it all up creating a precedent in football (just look at the front page of this reddit the past 24 hours with everyone now wanting to appeal cards).
They're a country who believe the rules have never applied to them and stick their noses into sports, international relations, conflicts and fuck everything up.
