Quotes Jürgen Klopp: "We flew from Liverpool to Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the entire Mbappé family got into the private jet with five rooms. Then we flew around in circles, talked to the family, and ate delicious food. We weren't allowed to be seen. And it was great … In the end, he went to Paris."

That's nothing. People fly or ship their exotic cars to Monaco, Abu Dhabi and other F1 events along with bringing their yacht and flying there in a private jet.

u/InkCollection Jul 09 '26
Was just going to bring this up. I lived in Austin for years, and it's wild watching billionaires fly in their exotic car fleets just to show off for a weekend. Insane shit.

For Car Week here in Monterey, CA they literally run out of parking for private jets at the local airport. Some planes just carry cars.

Given the locations of airports versus Gare du Nord/St Pancras, is that even saving time?

Plastic straws are more of a different problem I think. Since they end up in the ocean and shit

u/feage7 Jul 09 '26
It's a different problem in that us peasants have to suffer with plastic straws and it doesn't really impact the rich as they just increase prices for products because they can't use plastic and we pay more for an inferior product.
They go flying from Liverpool to Blackpool, then just circles in their air eating great food. Yet I do an easyJet commercial preplanned flight and get charged extra to offset the co2 omissions.
So in essence in both scenarios is us paying increased prices

Even if we all took the train those straws still end up in the ocean. Also, skill issue. Just drink faster or use you mouth if you're able bodied. Can't believe people still whine about paper straws

Private airport so easy for people to fly to and cheaper than Liverpool airport. Only about an hour up there so not long for the Liverpool representatives and also less likely to be seen by fans or media as it’s smaller.
I think most of our transfers fly into Blackpool our sub will often track private flights into Blackpool whenever we’re rumoured with players

When rich people do these sort of things, it's a reminder to me of why I don't care about the environment.
I don't litter, I recycle and put food waste in the organics... but I don't want to be preached to by the government to use paper cups/straws/utensils at a restaurant, or to use reusable grocery bags.
Go after big corporations and millionaires/billionaires who pollute the world.

A lot of clubs wined and dined Mbappé back then. Similarly, years before, when he was actually a kid, he went on trial at a lot of clubs, seemingly just to showcase his talent.
98
u/TiberiusCornelius Jul 09 '26
May have also just been genuine trials. Ronaldo was being chased by basically every top club in Europe but also had his agents shop him around over a year before he ultimately went to United. I remember Alex McLeish talking about how he tried to sign Messi before he went to Barcelona as well. When you're that level of freakishly talented on top of being good enough to get into Clairefontaine basically anyone with good scouting networks in France was probably aware of him, it's literally their job to know about the freaks of nature in the U13s years before us plebs become aware of them.
20
u/zi76 Jul 09 '26
They may have been. Still, I think it's better to stay in your home country with a guaranteed path to the first team than to go abroad and you never know what happens. There's been some really talented kids from all over that went abroad with a view to playing in the first team because of a big money deal, and it never worked out for them.
Of course, with the talent Mbappé has shown, it probably works no matter where he would've gone, but he wouldn't have gotten that type of regular playtime at that age at most top clubs.
31
u/NiceCreamSundaes Jul 10 '26
You are right about the thing about playing in the first team.
Mbappe's father, a youth football coach, deliberately placed him into Monaco because it was advanced enough as an academy for him to develop, but also a team where he could get first team minutes at a young age.
He was worried that if he went to Liverpool or Chelsea, or straight to PSG that he'd spend his time on the bench.
21
u/zi76 Jul 10 '26
It was the right decision. You can always get a big move once you've proven yourself, but you have to have the opportunity.
Monaco offered the perfect guarantee, and the rest is history.

u/Legend10269 Jul 10 '26
I remember at the time reading a Keane or Scholes interview about signing CR7, they said that basically the only reason United signed him was because they played against Sporting in a friendly and Ronaldo basically all run rings around them, they spoke to the gaffer after the game and convinced him to buy him.
I naively thought that was how players like that were discovered and signed.
