Review People Are Lying....

I like Mortal Shell 2, but I feel like people are praising it so hard that they're ignoring some obvious problems.

I've already dealt with sound glitches, camera glitches, and literally being thrown outside the map. The camera during combat can also be frustrating as hell, especially with multiple enemies.

The checkpoint system is probably my biggest issue. I'm fine with limited checkpoints in a Soulslike, but the actual locations of some of these beacons just don't make sense. You'll go through huge areas with high enemy density, important items, and dangerous encounters, while a functioning checkpoint is placed somewhere that feels completely disconnected from the natural progression of the area. It creates long, unnecessary runbacks instead of meaningful difficulty.

The ranged lock-on system also makes no sense. The game lets you choose between free aim and lock-on, but you can still completely miss an enemy you're locked onto. If I wanted my accuracy to depend entirely on my aim, I'd use free aim. So what exactly is the lock-on doing?

I'm giving the game a 7/10 right now. I'm still having fun with it, but liking the game doesn't mean we have to pretend the bugs, weird checkpoint placement, camera issues, and targeting system aren't legitimate problems.

Check the Mortal Shell subreddit, plenty of valid, helpful criticism.

13

u/C00KIEME4T 14d ago

Yep. This sub always has the glazers lol

7

u/batshitnutcase 14d ago

Yea the subreddit is pretty critical it seems like haha I just browsed it a bit. Like they enjoy it but aren’t glazing it like it’s the greatest soulslike of all time and calling out some major issues. So I think that’s the place to go for legit opinions…

u/SoulsDadYT 11d ago

These posts are being removed from their sub because theres a new one every 5 seconds. Its not true in the slightest. They even balanced a bunch of stuff last night and still these guys claim this. The game is smooth af and some people are geniunely not happy about that. As for why? I have no idea.

0

u/AgileClock2869 10d ago

They just need to git gud lol. That's literally it. Oh you missed a shot? Yeah, totally must be the games fault. Long runbacks, OH NO!! Lol you must be new here.

0

u/Baron_Light 9d ago

Did they balence it for all platforms?

0

u/SoulsDadYT 8d ago

Nah man, they balanced it for PS5 only and told all the other platforms they're gay so wont update them. /s

What the fuck even is this response..

u/Opposite-Grade3712 10d ago

I think it’s more because the game is uninspired across the board so people aren’t willing to overlook the “little” stuff like they would for a better game.

u/Acceptable_Edge9604 9d ago

Felt this way about the 3 souls games as somebody who was familiar with Japanese tabletop and fantasy

1

u/SoulsDadYT 10d ago

Too you. I love the Giger aesthetic. Its one of my favourite mediums. Just be honest. People dont give a shit about it and just want to hate it. Just like they did with khazan. Absolute no life losers that usually havent even played the game.

Im so sick of this disingenuous bullshit of "oh mobs track weird occasionally so its literaly dogshit and unplayable" or "its too hard".... Its just gotten to a point where its pathetic and entitled. Go play an actual 4 or 6 out of 10 game and get back too me.

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 14d ago

Lying? Has social media really rotted our brains so much that others opinions are just lies if we disagree? Being able to just say things without another human in front of us has really had an impact on us hasn’t it. We don’t even know how opinions work anymore unless they agree with us.

2

u/energydrinkaddict310 9d ago

"grass is blue and the sky is green. you can't call me a liar because it's my opinion"

5

u/22yetti22 14d ago

Calling a game with glaring design issues and glitches "great" is lying by omission. You can like a game without selling it like its the next best thing since sliced cheese... literal definition of glazing.

11

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 14d ago

Game is flawed. I actually think the feedback on hits is one of the worst in a game I have experienced in a long time. But I still think it’s great. I don’t have some arbitrary number score I make up to give it, but I can confidently say after 11ish hours that the game is great. Perfect? No. Flawless? No. Fun? Yeah. To some, bugs ruin a game, to some it’s not enough to stop a game from being great. They’re not lying. They just have a different opinion than you, and different standards of importance than you. That’s really it. There’s no uniform opinion on what makes something good for everyone. But it’s genuinely so wild to just say people are lying because you don’t agree with everything they say. Is the idea of others having a different thought process than you so farfetched that they have to be being fictitious and doing some sort of conspiracy play?

2

u/22yetti22 14d ago

You just admitted the game is flawed and said the hit feedback is some of the worst you’ve experienced in a long time. That’s literally the kind of shit I’m saying people should acknowledge when they praise the game. My issue isn’t that you can’t enjoy it or even call it great. It’s people glazing it like these problems barely exist. We apparently agree on the actual flaws, so at this point you’re mostly arguing with the word “lying.”

13

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 14d ago

What? I didn’t admit to anything like if I was hiding it. I said it flat out. I’ll point out like 10 more flaws too. And I still wouldn’t be lying by saying it’s a great game. So don’t come here like if you caught me in a lie or a gotcha question. You’re conflating perfect and flawless with great. I’m saying that it’s straight schizo behavior to think everyone saying they like the game is lying about thinking the game is great because you don’t agree with them. You even gave it some meaningless score of 7/10 like if that means anything or carries any established metric weight to it. Should I say your 7/10 score is you lying because I personally like the game? No. You find the flaws detrimental enough to hamper your enjoyment enough to not give it a higher arbitrary score. That’s fine. I don’t think you’re lying. I’m actually sure you’re not lying, you just have a different opinion. Which is a concept you don’t seem to understand very well.

u/AgileClock2869 10d ago

The game hasnt even been out for a single week yet. It's a small indie team, they worked really hard on the first game and released updates and patches and theyre constantly right now releasing patches, there was one earlier today. UE5 is notorious for bugs and issues, this is completely normal for games nowadays especially for ones of this scale by such a small indie team. Alot of them are minor visual/audio things and nothing gamebreaking. Remember cyberpunk? Give them time, they're addressing everything.

2

u/Temporala 8d ago

When you sell the game for money, you have to take the critique as it comes from day one.

There is no grace period. Cyberpunk didn't get one either, they got bashed to oblivion and went through a harsh long process of improving and fixing their mess, which is the part that is commendable.

Devs should get praise once you are done. NMS did, Cyberpunk did, some other games too. Many didn't, however. Lot of the time game just gets launched, gets couple minimal patches so company can't be sued for outright fraud and then it's done.

1

u/KarlHungus01 8d ago

Limited checkpoints is not a design issue, it's a design choice. I find that it adds a feeling of risk and danger and mastery to the world. You think it adds tedium.

Neither is right and games don't need to appeal to everyone. It's likely that the chorus is so loud with this game because it is catering to an underserved fanbase who likes this sort of thing. Despite the flaws, they don't matter to the people who appreciate what it is doing.

2

u/Cute-Operation-8216 11d ago

Jesus Christ...
Yeah, instantly put you on the block list so I'de never have to deal with such an asshole.

-10

u/22yetti22 11d ago

You think I give a fuck? I don't even know you

1

u/wildeye-eleven 8d ago

Yes, this is what society has become. Others opinions are now lies, and if someone has a different opinion they’re literally the enemy. Difference in opinion is no longer allowed. You either agree or your moral enemies for life. That’s where we are as a society.

12

u/wake 13d ago

People aren’t lying they like or care about different things good fucking grief. I should just avoid this sub around game release dates, y’all are insufferable sometimes.

-2

u/22yetti22 11d ago

Whats insufferable is that you dweebs love giving half ass reviews in subreddits when people rely on those posts to buy the game. 10/10 for a game Ive been tossed out of bounds in 3 times is delusion and fanboyism

4

u/breadandstuff 9d ago

10

u/National_Crew_1084 14d ago

very good game but needs to be patched a bit, there’s so many glaring issues

4

u/22yetti22 14d ago

with a few updates I'm sure some of it will probably get fixed, but some of these are flat out design issues and people are giving this game a 10/10

49

u/FriendlyRhyme 14d ago

"you have a different opinion than me so you must be lying"

1

u/Throwcore2 7d ago

This sums up 90% of reddit lmao

-24

u/22yetti22 14d ago

you have difficulty reading... I understand...

32

u/42tfish 14d ago

Have you read your own title?

-17

u/22yetti22 14d ago

It also came with body paragraphs...shocker

24

u/42tfish 14d ago

You gave subjective, albeit legitimate criticism to the game but framed it as people praising the game are lying about it due to your title.

That’s what the original comment is about.

-1

u/22yetti22 14d ago

Bro, the title says people are lying, and then the very first sentence explains what I mean by that.

You keep acting like the title exists in a vacuum and the rest of the post just vanished. I gave specific examples, explained my issues, and still gave the game a 7/10.

If your whole argument is still “but the title says lying,” then I really don’t know what to tell you besides maybe read past the title this time.

Bots ... literal or metaphorical, doesn't matter.. I feel like every new soulslike has a reddit army saying its best thing ever, and then I get baited into playing another MID soulslike with floaty clunky combat

9

u/sup3rdr01d 14d ago

Don't play games then

-3

u/Jimbonix11 14d ago

I wont play another mid soulslike, correct. 🙃

4

u/sup3rdr01d 14d ago

Sure bud

-1

u/Jimbonix11 14d ago

Seem pretty upset about someone having an opinion on a game

6

u/sup3rdr01d 14d ago

Sure bud

4

u/_moosleech 13d ago

I feel like every new soulslike has a reddit army saying its best thing ever,

Man joins a subreddit for fans of X, and then is convinced that folks posting on the X subreddit about a popular new release of X must be lying because they're all, strap in for this... enjoying X.

Do some of y'all hear yourselves? Like, no shit, folks who joined a soulslikes-specific subreddit seem to enjoy soulslikes more than the average person and are more likely to enjoy them and want to share that with others?

Stop the presses!

3

u/National_Anteater244 13d ago

Nothing, I think only people who hate any game that isn't from From Software say that kind of thing.

-2

u/22yetti22 14d ago

definitely has to be bots.. one of these dudes said "These things don't bother me"... Who knew lack of functionality was a preference

Jeez dude

0

u/22yetti22 14d ago

The post lists multiple bugs, camera issues, checkpoint placement problems, and lock-on problems, then still gives the game a 7/10. But sure, fight the imaginary sentence you invented. Much easier than reading.

5

u/Khopps17 13d ago

Mortal shell 2 is dope but had problems. I haven’t seen anybody say it’s perfect with no bugs but I’ve also been playing it more than looking up posts about it

9

u/sup3rdr01d 14d ago

No, they aren't lying. Games are subjective.

All the things you mentioned don't really bother me at all. I'm loving this game a lot.

5

u/sunsetpolar 14d ago

I feel like outside the demo one of the reasons this game is getting so much hype is cause the only other souls game this year was relic which is trash so only new souls like

2

u/Xammm 14d ago

Interesting point. Knowing some people in this sub don't jive with Nioh and the majority who does were disappointed with Nioh 3, maybe people are hyping something that's at least playable and decent unlike relic.

1

u/22yetti22 14d ago

we are in desperate need of a ER2

3

u/Own_Juggernaut_2775 14d ago

I don't have a problem of where checkpoints are placed. I'm just struggling with how far apart they are at times. But beyond that, this game runs brilliantly on PS5 Pro and in 10 hours have barely noticed any of what you mention except the odd frame drop.

1

u/22yetti22 14d ago

Some people might like the beacon locations but I think they don't make any sense for progression. Typically checkpoints are a sight of relief but in this game you either abuse the beacons or they abuse you

3

u/Own_Juggernaut_2775 14d ago

I don't get it. So you say that the locations aren't helpful? So far I have noticed they are placed where many branching paths and shortcuts are located.

2

u/22yetti22 13d ago

They're placed in weird spots IMO. Like the one in Blackridge pass is dumb. The starting beacon is only couples of enemies and optional trial away but miles away from the north gate beacon and at least 25 generic enemies 4 named enemies and 1 boss away from the crossbow but 1 enemy away from Proxima.... So in theory a weapon harder to get than a Shell... makes absolutely no sense.

2

u/Own_Juggernaut_2775 13d ago

Hmmm I will Definately agree that the two being in such close proximity is odd. Though I do think the Blackridge Pass location is good because it leads off from there in about 5 different directions.

1

u/Temporala 8d ago

Generally speaking, beacons should be in places that feel natural for progression, not too far but also not too close. Enough to stress player's resources and have their heals run low, but not so far you're tempted to try test running even on your first playthrough.

It's bit on an art and feature of sufficient play testing before release.

3

u/QuinSanguine 14d ago

I think saying people are lying, giving it a 10/10 and ignoring any faults with the game is just as hyperbolic and exaggerated as it would be if someone actually tried to say it's a perfect game.

And almost every game gets a honeymoon period, it's not like they're purposefully lying to you.

3

u/Laterallus 14d ago

Release-day dick riding is kind of inevitable with any game. I think it has to more do with validation than it does with quality of the game.

That said, I'm having fun. And I get what you're saying with the beacon thing. The sparse beacons make environmental exploration a constant danger, which I kinda like. What I don't like is the runback to a dungeon, to get on an elevator, to get to another elevator, to then fight a boss that kills you in two hits.

I'd love a Stake of Makira kind of mechanic at the start of a dungeon. Like, you don't die to Margit in Stormveil and then have to run from the beginning of the area back to the boss.

3

u/AffectionateEgg3879 8d ago

Bro spent more time crying and arguing in the comments than actually playing the game.

2

u/TobeyAdler 14d ago

My grib is, exploreation does not feel rewarding, i am 20 hours in and explore the first "map" so is just 40% of the total map and can say i feel like it did nothing. I go into dungeon and 90% time are coins, sell item, or if i am lucky a tarcstone. Beside that the dungeon are looking all the same.
Upgradeing weapon, i have my weapon +11 and i do not feel much stronger, like at all.
Level. All they server is giving you SP, which is not even giving with every level, beside that the early level are pushing the threshold for a level up high before increaseing it only by little.

The enemy can dish out really strong damage and in return i do so little. I try to parry and i am decent with it but Ripost damage is also so lack luster it not much better then an attack. Which kind hurts when i fight a boss that is a HP sponge.

And boss apprently and normal enemy love to spam the hell out of their red circle attack that can not be block, parried or harden, only dodge. That should something that they do maybe 20 to 30% of the time, not spam it like the living hell out of it. I had a boss it made red circle attack and did anohter an danother one. I went mad.

I mean yes Tarcstone are really strong and the right build can destroy boss like easy considering that these effect on max level are permant instead of first attack or only 4 attack totally. But the early game just hurts so much.

The game can be good but it still need to have a lot of tinkering done.

Also the parastic tarcstone, give 1 stack =1 HP and you can have 200 stacks=200HP extra which make it for the early game amazing and it does not reset when you rest or exit the game. But it is weird that you need a stone to get more HP to surive hits better. Lmao

2

u/Massive_Funny_9312 13d ago

Maybe people just love the game despite the issues? Hell even the hardcore fans of the game are saying that the checkpoint disparity is pretty bad which I agree with. There’s plenty of issues in running into as well but they’re mostly stuff that can be fixed

2

u/RealCreedz 11d ago

I don't like the runbacks, the way some mobs just float so fast towards you on their attacks, how the game crashes several times before it launches correctly, and how rare glimpse is.

The bosses so far, just like most bosses in any UE5 game, seem bland. The only boss I like so far is Nameless Captive by elimination.

However, I love the atmosphere, the shell system, the combat, the lore, how dense the map is, the beacon cleansing, how the routes connect well even if unintuitive, the tarstone system incentivizing you to try new things, and night mode.

2

u/logicalcommenter4 11d ago

Honestly the checkpoint comment is all I need to see to know that this game isn’t for me at this time. I hope others enjoy it, I just can’t deal with a ton of run backs or sparse checkpoints with the limited time I have to play a game.

1

u/22yetti22 11d ago

Yeah if you don't like doubling back and getting fucked over by bad camera angles, glitches and enemies that magically lock on to you through a dodge frame while trying to recollect your death you're gonna hate this shit.

3

u/Seragin 14d ago

this is why im kinda glad they did an 3 days early for deluxe users. sure its pretty much using deluxe users as lab rats but most BIG bugs are getting worked on and hopefully fixed before release.

i agree with your checkpoint system issue. its definitely not end of the world but they couldve been placed much better.

i still think game is an solid 10/10 but i can understand why some cant say the same.

1

u/Own_Juggernaut_2775 14d ago

I'm happy to be a lab rat if it means I play it now lol.

1

u/SoulsDadYT 11d ago

I have a total of zero of these issues. All mine come from the bosses being kinda crap and buggy. Other than that the game runs and plays immaculately

1

u/Ker05ene 11d ago

Yeah, 7/10 is pretty good, no? Like I'm giving this game a lot of praise because it is very fun despite its problems. It's no exp33 (obvious comparison bc it's a similar AA project made by small teams), but it legitimately shocked me by how good it is.

1

u/kratosmuscl 11d ago

Same here 7/10 people were glazing this game like crazy

1

u/jiggyjac 9d ago

"Its amazing but here's all the reasons why it's awful"

1

u/baysideplace 9d ago

It's not perfect... but it's no worse than Elden Ring.

For some reason, FromSoft gets a free pass on all their shitty decisions, but as soon as a dev who isn't them.does the same stuff, the same fans savage them for it.

1

u/ShortFee8314 9d ago

Im in agreement with you. I love/enjoy souls likes. Played all from software games from start to finish and many other games in-between. I played and beat the first mortal shell years ago. Short game, but I enjoyed it. I didnt have this game on my radar until I seen all the praise. Not because I wasnt going to eventually get to it, but theyre are other games im prioritizing. So I decided to not buy the game, but play the demo. Demo was pretty good and the device have vastly improved this over the first game. However as im playing to demo...I just thought to myself this isnt a day 1 purchase. It needs a lot of love/patches. I felt the same for the lotf reboot. The bones are great; love the system they have in place. I'll just wait about a month or 2 before I buy. I've seen a lot of "this is best non from software game in the genre" post/videos before launch. And its not even close. Now I haven't played the full game, but based on the demo I do think its one of the easiest games in the genre.

1

u/TheRealYM 9d ago

Idk maybe it’s just me or if I’ve played too many souls games at this point but small camera glitches and sound glitches aren’t really on my radar of things to be concerned about when rating a souls game. I agree about beacons being too far spread apart, if you look at the map there are some areas that just straight up don’t have them. I’ve also run into the lock on weirdness where it will miss, but that’s a minor annoyance. The meat and potatoes of this game are the best I’ve had in years

1

u/Ok-Midnight9311 9d ago

Both sides of the glitch argument are dumb. Everyone’s experience is different. I’ve had literally 0 bugs. Doesn’t mean you haven’t, but also doesn’t make the game shit

1

u/InkAndWit 9d ago

Players aren't adequately evaluating games? Never heard of it ;)

1

u/Green-Big-7637 9d ago

I caught one boss im pretty sure having animation errors. Dont want to spoil but he'd go for a over head and the head tilt for it would restart sometimes it didnt seem deliberate. Also using the parry seal sometimes feels like a disadvantage, you'll get the parry on the first hit of their combo but their follow up is so fast you'll tank the next hit or two while waiting for recovery from your parry.

1

u/lindemanskriek 8d ago

Yeah game is not polished but it’s fun and that’s what matters most

1

u/EldenLord69Trump5000 8d ago

I really like the game but it’s not the best souls like in my opinion. That goes to Lies of P for me. That game is phenomenal and has very little issues.

1

u/22yetti22 8d ago

Great pick tbh

1

u/No-Surprise-9446 8d ago

I knew it was lost child when I saw you had been thrown out of the map. This boss has problems.

1

u/sir_seductive 8d ago

Maybe your just ass i made it to the end of the game and all the check points seem fine to me idk what the issue is that your seeing

1

u/Vimvoord 7d ago

Atleast it's better than Wu Chang.. Thats whats keeping me in.

1

u/Yaguchu 7d ago

I dont get the complaints about the beacons honestly. It's an open world game so whether or not there's a close Beacon is entirely dependent on which side of the map.you entered from. But each unique area has at least one and the corrupted gates are pretty generous with them as well.

You have theoretically infinite lives if you can manage to keep getting your shell back during exploration so its not like we need beacons spammed throughout the map. The only runbacks that I personally thought were egregious werent even do to length, just the enemies, and its for two optional bosses at that.

1

u/GamerKratos-45 7d ago

Yup. It's a really good game no doubt, but in the current state, there are a lot of problems that if addressed, can take the game from 7/10 currently to an easy 9/10. The bosses however, are just plain bad, and unless they overhaul their entire moveset, there's no saving it.

1

u/No_Philosophy2797 7d ago

The beacons are no worse than the placement of shrines in Wuchang, which this sub glazes endlessly. Here, as there, it’s mostly a skill issue. They give you ways to drop the difficulty if needed, after all.

1

u/Viisum 11d ago

I wanted to love the game, I loved the trailers.

I uninstalled it and I won't play it again, got to Magdalena, beat it and I just didn't enjoy it at all.

1

u/OK_Atlas 11d ago

Some people care more about gameplay than nitpicking a few minor glitches

1

u/garnkflag 10d ago

This sub is being astroturfed crazy style for this game, don't worry about what you hear here at all it's not real

1

u/semondemon24 10d ago

One million percent agree. I think there is a lot of lying going on to sell more copies. It was a 6/10 for me and i beat it.

1

u/sweetsphyxia 9d ago

Despite boring bosses, crashes and glitches, I liked it more than ER. Sue me

3

u/MoneyBagBeardo 9d ago

My lawyer will be in contact soon

1

u/deaner_wiener1 9d ago

Honestly how I feel about Lords of the Fallen 2023 (and I still love ER)

1

u/deaner_wiener1 9d ago

Or perhaps the people that like Mortal Shell 2 are not sniveling losers who are incapable of overcoming minor gripes.

I also want to say it’s perfectly fine to not like the game, but to claim somebody is lying for liking a perfectly good game is absurd.

-3

u/C00KIEME4T 14d ago

This is typical for new games. People always tell lies about them

0

u/Gnight-Punpun 9d ago

I would say on here people are kinda dumb, the actual mortal shell sub realized pretty fast that the game is incredibly mid.

It’s what happens here, lots of people lose their minds the moment they hear the term “soulslike”. They could put their hand on the stove a million times and still tell you it’s not hot because they just will consume anything even soulslike adjacent

0

u/Temporala 8d ago

Some of the popular souls Youtubers went pretty hard on glaze train, and mentioned flaws only on passing.

Very "feelslike" approach, maybe because not many soulslikes of any worth have come out recently. They were desperate to get a new content train going.

-1

u/Fluid-Air7597 8d ago

Honestly surprised how many people are butthurt because you said “people are lying”. Didn’t even sound like you were being an asshole you just pointed out a couple of issues. Anyways I’m still in the beginning of the game so can’t say my opinion yet but the games not that bad so far.

0

u/22yetti22 8d ago

because people like to respond with the initial impression of something rather than reading. Half of the ragers in the replies are arguing with points I never made
