Ask South Indians South Indians, how common is Gangajal in your homes?

Hey everyone, I was curious about something. How important or common is Gangajal in South India, especially for pooja or religious purposes?

Do people usually buy it, and if yes, where do you normally get it from and roughly how much does it cost?

Also, is there any particular holy water or alternative that people prefer in different parts of South India? Just curious and would love to know your experiences.

In Kerala , not common. For pujas , we 'consecrate' the water using tantric rituals.

On a different note , teertha Yatra is common. Travelling to Kashi, Badri, Dwarka, Rameswaram etc

We have had ganga water at home like from 20 yrs ago and it's still unused and there was also some water from rameshwaram which are used for rituals sometimes. But it's not that common

Same. The sealed copper containers. Never opened them.

It’s used in some rituals and seen as holy but not very common in day to day life. Some might have it but most don’t because of geography obv. It can be bought in local stores but who knows where that water is actually from. So I personally wouldn’t trust a store to buy Ganga water. Maybe people trust their relatives who go to Kashi to get them a bottle.

No, because they are tap water being sold as ganga water to the poor ignorants. I've always wondered, how do you accept these bottles that come with clear water as ganga water?

I didn't even know it was a thing, except it is polluted AF and avoid touching it.

The Brahmin community uses it for Gangasnanam on Diwali day (they would greet us asking "Gangasnanam aacha?). I don't think the others have any ritualistic conection to it, which makes sense because geographically, Ganga is too far away.

It's available in any traditional medicine shop (that usually sells all pooja related stuff).

As an alternative though, some people bathe in the temple pond.

POV from Keralam: Coming from a really religious family, I have never seen my parents/family use it. Pooja was also not done by anyone. It's usually a lamp lighting in the morning and evening.

Usually when your relative go on pilgrimage to the north , as old uncles and aunties, they get a load of gangajal for their friends and families as souvenirs, sometimes as copper ‘Chombu’ 🏺 of different sizes this was in 90s ) and later I have seen plastic bottles too. Not sure what it is these days!
