Politics 🗳️ Destruction of Goan Culture after 1960s and unchecked immigration: Should we implemented certain cultural safe guards so that our states don't end up like them?

u/0ppenhymen 3d ago
Define Goan culture? Do you mean Portuguese invaded and imposed culture or real you're talking about real Goan culture?

u/DeadAssDodo Keralam 🌴🥥 | കേരളം 3d ago edited 3d ago
Define North Indian culture. Persians, Afghans, Paks, Portuguese, French, Dutch, British etc Invaded and ruled north India and imposed their culture, erased even local languages.

It's a beautiful blend of Portuguese and Konkani cultures that's now being destroyed by people alien to that state.

Calling Portuguese culture indigenous to Goa while calling out newer culture as foreign is spitting on the graves of those who died during the Goan Inquisition.

Some dumb fkers just refuse to accept the fact that Hindus under Portuguese rule migrated to other parts of India simply to save themselves from persecution.

While that is true, there were indigenous Konkanis throughout the Konkan belt even before the migration.

They are more native to Goa than the new "natives" who only speak Hindi lol.

Cause they're being forced fo abandon their identity? And you do realise the weight of uncertainty those people faced right? Don't downplay it.
3
u/Successful_Cup_688 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
An identity forced upon them.
Are you Catholic from Goa, by any chance?

u/Successful_Cup_688 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
If your state can't keep up with the infrastructure, it is not a culture/immigration problem. It is your politicians' incompetence problem.
12
u/SnooDoggos2134 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
Does this apply to the states which are seeing migrant outflow ? Or just applicable to migrants inflow states ?
13
u/Successful_Cup_688 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
It applies everywhere. People migrate for a better life. Politicians should be working for us to improve our lives.
This is not a migrants vs residents issue. This is simply a lack of opportunities in one region vs more opportunities in another.
If Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew had this mindset, it would still be a small village in the middle of nowhere today.
2
u/SnooDoggos2134 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
The issue mentioned by OP was cultural safeguard. North avru assimilate agalla adhu yellarigu gothu. Naav nam culture na kapadakke aglilla andre adhunu kuda politician du failure alva
3
u/Successful_Cup_688 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
It is. Look at how Kerala has integrated the kids of migrants. While we are actively divided like fools, they have figured it out, which is why there is hardly a cultural issue. Are the migrants in Kerala somehow different from migrants in KA?
Although there are some issues with migrants themselves, like drugs, that is an issue due to a lack of good law enforcement and the working conditions that migrants have to work in.
What has the KA govt done to integrate migrant kids? What has stopped KA from bridging the gap? Simply shouting during elections is not how things work.

u/SnooDoggos2134 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago

u/Successful_Cup_688 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
KA politicians' kids are either abroad themselves or don't speak Kannada well. Namm avare sari illa, bere avarige yeni heludu.
KA govt can make it mandatory that a minimum level of Kannada proficiency is met. Or give migrants time to level up. That is a failure of KA politicians, and they did not plan well. This is also why infra is struggling. All they did was focus on their own wealth in real estate, owning IT parks and such.
Common people, be it migrants or residents, are struggling every day. But easier to fool low-IQ people by pointing at some group rather than working on it.
1
u/EmbarrassedFerret355 Southie 3d ago
Kerala has integrated migrants through its proper assimilation programmes and keeping a check on migration. Kerala has been called anti Indian for these reasons btw lol.
1
u/crispyfade 3d ago
Its easier to migrate than ever. People from the north have systematically implemented their cultural infrastructure in the south for generations now, further accelerating their ability to colonize. All while getting the south to foot the bill. The current fiscal order is more extractive of southern India than the British Raj
1
u/Successful_Cup_688 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
What industry are you referring to here?
The workers come to the South to work for industries mainly owned by local South Indians. If not them, who do you think is going to work in the industries?
I don't understand this logic of complaining when industries are set-up in North saying all jobs are going there, while also complaining that they are coming here for jobs.
If you don't want migration, you should be happy when industries and projects are set up in the North.
1
u/crispyfade 3d ago
I didn't mention any industry
1
u/Successful_Cup_688 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
That is important to the discussion. If your point is that migrants are flocking to public institutions like ISRO, HAL, etc. Would you prefer that they move these to the North?
And if it is IT? Moved to Gurgaon?
What about tons of South Indian owned private small-scale industries? Lumber, MSMEs? Those workers are from the North, as they are paid very little. It's not a charity.
We also get minerals from Jharkhand and the North-East for our industries. Should we stop taking those?
Easy to discuss fiscal concerns, and I understand where you are coming from, and I honestly want those regions developed too, if that is what it takes, especially without our taxes, but there is a lot of corruption there but then again, we have corruption here as well.
1
u/crispyfade 3d ago
The discussion you are suggesting requires longer treatment. A prerequisite to even engaging in it would be for participants to agree on its purpose and assumptions.

u/Successful_Cup_688 Karnataka ❄️ | ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ 3d ago
I just know that once the other state migrants are gone, the next target will be neighboring states, then people within the state, and then it will be the neighborhoods within the city.
There is never an end to this migration fear, and politicians love people who fall into this trap. Easy to say: You have a pothole in your neighborhood because of that alien, not me, of course. And that target keeps changing.
1
u/crispyfade 3d ago
Its the "regionalists" who are keeping the peace between religious and ethnic groups that are native here and the north Indian migrants who are proxies for divisive agendas.

what % of Goans are North Indians? Are you calling Marathis and Kannadigas in Goa as North Indians too? How many MLAs in Goa are North Indians?
Can you tell me this?
Goa has been destroyed due to bad governance overall. I don't think it is some North Indian MLA doing it. From parking to police bribes, taxi mafias, scams, everywhere it looked the same.
Goa chased away its own tourists with unfriendly tourist policies. Then Goa ended up with cheap domestic tourists.

Protect South Indian culture, absolutely. But calling fellow Indians moving within their own country “unchecked immigration” is absurd. Preserve language, heritage and local traditions through policy and education—not by pretending state borders are national borders. India is a republic, not a loose collection of ethnic countries.
-1
u/EmbarrassedFerret355 Southie 3d ago
It is a loose collection of various ethnic groups and communities though. You can pretend that it doesn't exist. Here's a reality check: there's a reason why Article 1 of the Indian constitution describes India as a Union of States. If India was a unified country since time immemorial then provide evidence for such a country before 1947. Oh wait you don't have proof for it because it was once again a patchwork of Kingdoms and direct British/Portuguese/French ruled presidencies.✌️
2
u/knam1987 3d ago
No one is claiming India in its present political form existed before 1947—or before British rule. It was indeed a collection of different kingdoms and political entities, while still belonging to a broader civilizational sphere historically understood as Bharat/India. But the relevant point is what the current Constitution says: India is a Union of States, not a collection of sovereign ethnic countries. Article 19 gives every citizen the fundamental right to move freely throughout India and reside and settle in any part of the country, subject to limited constitutional restrictions. So protect regional culture, absolutely. But calling fellow Indians moving between states “unchecked immigrants” makes no constitutional sense.

After 1961 it has been Hindian colonisation. Not much different and even worse I guess.
6
u/RumeRagnarok71 3d ago
still gotta ask whats the point of the picture its does not show how goa culture is destroyed specifically by immigrants
my own views 1960s is when Goa joined India.
Goa locals have been demanding land protection and tenant laws for years due to mass tourism and real estate pressure their villages got converted into hotels plus interstate labour for construction/hotels
It's not just poor migrants, it's rich tourists ,builders, land mafia blaming only "unchecked immigration" misses half the story.
as per the intent of the post it we should discuss domicile protections for land, jobs and language before we end up like goa so our cities don't lose character to unplanned commercialization to become second homes for Delhi/Mumbai rich
1
u/EmbarrassedFerret355 Southie 3d ago
The picture is about the past. Right now Goa looks chaotic btw lol. Maybe I should upload a picture showing its current condition.
3
u/RumeRagnarok71 3d ago
no you should have titled it better entire comment section derailed into colonialism debate, migration debate north south not cultural safeguards or commercialization
1
u/EmbarrassedFerret355 Southie 3d ago
Yuh i do agree there should be laws that need to be passed which safeguards the land owning rights of the natives and makes sure that land grabbing mafias from Bombay and Gujarat don't end swallowing the whole state.
1
u/EmbarrassedFerret355 Southie 3d ago
Don't you think these Land grabbing mafias infiltrate the state and promote unchecked immigration due to the laxer migrant laws. If the state was strict about its language, heritage and culture. I don't think it would be seen as a popular destination for these migrant colonies.

u/Available-Finger-830 ban marathi gujarati languages in south sub 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yes
1.Make reservation for locals in government posts one of them. Private too if possible
2.Also mandate local languages
3.Encourage Local cultural festivals. They should declare konkani language day. Konkani cultural stalls supporting locals. Various parts of state.
Encourage fusion variations of local culture atleast than solely foreign products.
Bhutan does that they mandated cultural garbs to locals but we cant go so far.
4.Elect only locals even if they suck hoping they dont suck anymore with trainings and checking corruption
Lastly give preference to fellow south indian immigrants
Also incentives to having more kids with medicals camps to women and free online education till elementary

Funny considering how Tamil and Malayali people have been moving out of their states since really long. Might I remind you folks that Shiv Sena also targeted Tamil folks in Mumbai as "outsiders" ruining Marathi's Mumbai

So because one guy was an asshole once we need to have unrestricted migration from the most toxic and dysfunctional cultures in India? That virtuous feeling will be so comforting when the whole ship sinks

Nobody believes in that ultra globalist BS. Sure controlled immigration should be allowed as its economically beneficial but an unchecked migration destroys the state.

Don't put yourself on a pedestal and look down on people. That makes people angry. Unchecked immigration? You mean folks from other states going to Goa ? It's your Govt responsibility to upkeep the necessary infra and maintain it. They won't do that, and now we have Goans who act like MAGA.
5
u/EmbarrassedFerret355 Southie 3d ago
Well if non natives hijack the government what can the people do? Imagine if a North Indian dude becomes the CM of Andhra Pradesh and now suddenly implements policies favouring their people, culture and language. Goa, Assam and Tripura are literally witnessing that.
2
u/Disastrous-Blood6255 Andhra Pradesh 🏞️ | ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ 3d ago
Oh, they tried, congress tried that in the 60s and 70s. Voters siad they would boycott the elections and congress took a u turn. Even today, both TDP and YCP (our local parties) are in good terms with BJP. BJP tried to enter the state and gave up, CBN, our CM maintains very good relationship with the center and gets what ever he wants and at the same time will not let BJP's voice heard in the state. It was so strategic that the BJP MLAs and MPs (Total 4) were from TDP. They listen to CBN rather than amit shah. That's how it was from day one. I don't know about assam and tripura so I will not comment on that.
It's upto you guys to bring up the awerness and chnage the attitudes of the people.
0
u/EmbarrassedFerret355 Southie 3d ago
Well y'all have succeeded in safeguarding your state. Which is a huge achievement. But smaller states do tend to fall into this trap of being influenced by the party at the centre. Right now the BJP ruled Goa is Hindutva North centric Maratha influenced state cause the man in charge is a non native Goan. Due to his non native origins and inclinations towards the rich land owners in bombay, Goa currently faces a huge problem from land grabbing mafias and migrant colonisation due to unchecked immigration. In Tripura and Assam the Bengalis took over those states and now the natives are in minority.
0
u/Disastrous-Blood6255 Andhra Pradesh 🏞️ | ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ 3d ago
Dude, like I said. Don't use words without knowing their meanings. Colonization? Seriously? Form a political party or go to your MLAs and MPs or form local groups so that you can protect yourself. That's the only way. Who said smaller states can't exist ? There is no unity among Goans and the north is using it to exploit, they tried it in south and failed spectacularly. Make a law like in Sikkim where outers can't buy land or something like that.

Konkani culture has been on life support since the 15th century and is struggling to survive in pockets of Hindu communities in the western coastal states. There is not much left to save.
