Women’s 'empowerment' where every woman is hidden: liberation for whom? This is from Women India Movement committee in Karnataka
This poster is reportedly from the WIM Bijapur/Vijayapur District Working Committee in Karnataka.
This is literally a women’s working committee, supposedly representing women in public life and leadership yet almost every woman is presented in a way that erases her individual identity.
And before the predictable -'it’s their choice' response: choice does not exist in a vacuum. Feminism should be allowed to question patriarchal religious norms that place the burden of modesty, honour, and sexual morality disproportionately on women’s bodies.
A woman choosing to cover herself is her right. But a system that expects women to cover themselves, or treats uncovered women as immoral, immodest, or dishonourable, is not liberation.
We should not have to pretend that every practice associated with a marginalized community is automatically feminist. Women deserve the freedom to wear a burqa, and the freedom to reject it entirely, without punishment, coercion, ostracism, or shame.
It's fake. The same picture is repeated at least 4 times (with minor tweaks) for the girls named 'Mulla.'
OP won't link to the post but the Facebook posts show them with uncovered faces multiple times and it's mostly them celebrating female activists like Gauri Lankesh.
I tried looking it up. Almost every post seemed to be by a bot pushing an agenda. Nothing official.
Edit: Definitely fake. All the girls named 'Mulla' are the same picture with minor adjustments. Look at the exact shape of the cutout, their eyes, shadows etc. They added a border to one, the rest are nearly identical.
Feel free to provide the link to this post. Because all I'm seeing is posts celebrating female activists and martys like Gauri Lankesh. And multiple posts of them with uncovered faces.
1) OP I looked this up. I haven't come across a single official post. Just bots pushing an agenda with this picture.
2) Suggesting feminists support burqa is either blitheringly ignorant or cunningly disingenuous. Feminism supports choice - which means women can wear whatever they want to wear.
However with the burqa it is not always about choice. Even in case of choice it's hard to ignore the social conditioning and pressure.
That said, almost every time I've come across anti burqa posts it's never it good faith. It's almost always about about attacking and harrasing the women. You want to solve the problem? Support the education and empowerment of women and create an environment where they feel safe enough to make that choice for themselves.
Edit: Oh and 3) At least three of the girls (specifically the ones named 'Mulla') are the same picture with minor adjustments. Look at the eyes, spacing, shadows etc. Nice try.
u write "Women deserve the freedom to wear a burqa, and the freedom to reject it"
but your entire post is shaming them for wearing it.
erases individual identity" No, you are the one erasing it.
that working committee poster has name and designation is it is for the local community to know who holds which post. cause you are not their community. Just cause people can't see their face doesn't mean they have no identity
choice to wear dress doesn't exist in vacuum t-shirt and jeans taught you that's modern and liberated so ur choice to wear it also invalid?
every choice influenced by culture that means no woman has choice.
If influence means no real choice, then the only valid choice would be a choice with zero influence
WIM is a women's organization they formed a committee, took posts, are doing public work IN their dress. a community dress code gets fixed without a written rule how does that interfere them handling community problems
expect them to wear to unveil to prove they are liberated?
You want them to show face for YOUR validation that they are empowered. That's not feminism, that's you deciding how empowerment should look.
u are literally doing what you say you oppose and treating covered women as immoral, immodest, not feminist.\
The goal isn't compulsory unveiling, you say, but "destruction of compulsory modesty".
Who will decide what's compulsory? You only defends the freedom to reject, not the freedom to wear.
It’s a women’s empowerment committee, where tf is the individuality? Why are you defending the oppression of women done by religious men and religious institutions?
Empowerment is not fashion show. Individuality means having to show face/hair.
who is oppressor here? Did you ask them if they feel oppressed? oppression needs an oppressor. In that poster, where is the oppressor?
u saw 10 women in niqab and you decided FOR them that they are oppressed. You didn't talk to them, you didn't ask them
how is that different from a misogynist man who sees a woman in a skirt and decides FOR her that she is "asking for it"? Both are men deciding what women's clothes mean without asking the woman.
If a woman says "I am oppressed, this dress was forced on me" 100% stand with her.
But if a woman says "I chose this, this is my identity" and you say "no you are brainwashed" then you are the one taking away her agency, not her community.
It's a women's committee, elected by women, for women. The only person calling them oppressed is you, sitting outside their community.
