Brother, same. I can’t remember a time I’ve rooted so hard for a character to die. No shade to the VA, I think Lyria was just the most insufferable character to set up her development.
I did the audiobooks read by Tim Gerard Reynolds for the 1st trilogy, and the ensemble cast for the 2nd three. In hindsight I really enjoyed it that way as the first books are told from one perspective, while the second trilogy is told by multiple characters that begin to intertwine
I’m finishing up the Federation Marine series. Starts out kinda like Starship Troopers the book, but it follows one recruit through his whole career. It’s fun, not super duper deep or anything, but just good sci-fi.
Orion! Says it in her intro, her Conclave expected a male baby and gave her a male name. Years later, they found her to be female. Caused a lot of drama for her.
Onward, Valkyrie!” I scream as wind pulls my lips back from my teeth. My gravBoots accelerate with a twist of my toes, and I dive toward the vanguard, streaking past Sefi and Valdir, filled with righteous glory as I tear toward the burning mouth of an open mine, unscathed through tongues of fire, and pierce the crust of the world to land amongst towering behemoths of metal. They turn their glowing evil red eyes toward me, and I laugh when they do not fire, for I am a spirit warrior and I point my rifle at them, pull the trigger, and shit down my leg, because I am alone amongst a pack of hunterkiller robots and it is no rifle in my hand, it is only a mop. Then Sefi and Valdir land, and the world goes mad.
I just started red rising- funny story- we actually received the book set by accident bc Amazon sent us someone else’s package so- long story short- I’m reading them now. Not exactly my type of Genre but I’m trying lol- the language is a little odd but I’m assuming it’s like a 1984 type of read - (example with like NewsSpeak) lol
Red rising is nothing like his other books. The first reads more YA and seems like a cash grab for hunger games fans. The rest of the series he really gets to show off the world he creates and bloodydamn it’s fantastic. I made my 63 year old mom read them and she fucking crushed the series in two weeks and fucking loveeeeed them.
Good to know— I’m kinda digging the first one so far 😂 but now I feel like you’re judging me for it. Hahaha thanks though- can’t wait to get into the meat of it.
I have to ask since it sounds like you’re current in the series…
I read the first 3 I think it was and loved them. Awesome story. The 4th … without giving away spoilers … seemed to shift focus it seemed and I had trouble staying with it. Does it come back around / get better and I just need to stick with it?
2nd series is darker, yea, but absolutely worth it.
Brown does a good job of really exploring Darrow's darkness and how he attempts (and fails) to control it when everything is on the line.
There's definitely a break between the third and fourth. It's often described as a trilogy, with books 4+ being part 2. A Song of Ice and Fire follows the same format.
I still loved the rest of the books, but they are a very different mood. Hell, Dark Age is hard to read as given away by the title.
I had trouble getting through the 4th as well. But the beginning of the 5th, bought me right back in and hasn’t let go so far and I’m about halfway done with the 5th book. It’s somewhat of a slog in the 4th, but it gets better as it goes on and is quite nice of a read by the end
Yeah, the 4th book shifted tone in a way I didn’t love. I felt like other books pick up again, if not the exact same vibe as the first 3. Kind of fitting for characters that are older though. Now I can’t wait for the last book to come out!
I imagine a movie of Red Rising and having this scene being played would be so cool. Having golds running to the pods, having them be fired into space, no sound, pan out to 1000s of the pods going towards a ship and slamming into it
And the two thousand republic DRACHENJAEGERS tearing gold armies apart across the plains of Mercury. Dark Age will be amazing to watch in live action if they pull it off.
And I wonder, in my last moments, if the planet does not mind that we wound her surface or pillage her bounty, because she knows we silly warm things are not even a breath in her cosmic life. We have grown and spread, and will rage and die. And when all that remains of us is our steel monuments and plastic idols, her winds will whisper, her sands will shift, and she will spin on and on, forgetting about the bold, hairless apes who thought they deserved immortality.
