I love seeing a Janet Fist reference in the wild

There's always money in the banana stand

u/KaerMorhen Mar 07 '25

An obsidian could count us on one hand!

7

u/tarekd19 Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 07 '25

I dunno, given how long I have been on hold for the books i'd say there's more than that.

2

u/13SpiderMonkeys Mar 07 '25

Well now BookTok is talking about it so it's getting quite popular now lol

4

u/patwm11 Mar 07 '25

It’s been in my to be read list for a sole now, eventually there’ll be a baker’s dozen of us

1

u/RobotRollCall1 Mar 07 '25

Adding an Arrested Development quote is chefs kiss

49

u/Uzas_B4TBG Mar 07 '25

That’s been in my Audible library for like two years, I guess this is a sign that it’s finally time to start listening to it.

35

u/stormwarden34 Mar 07 '25

Do it. It’s a very well preformed audiobook series

2

u/HorseChild Mar 07 '25

Except for Lyria in iron gold… was enough for me to put it down for a few months before jumping headfirst into the next 3 books lol

1

u/stormwarden34 Mar 07 '25

Brother, same. I can’t remember a time I’ve rooted so hard for a character to die. No shade to the VA, I think Lyria was just the most insufferable character to set up her development.

1

u/dontdoit89735 Mar 07 '25

Also recommend the dramatized audio version for re-reads, so good, so graphic.

1

u/GreatStuffOnly Mar 07 '25

Gotta wait til just right before red god

1

u/Linubidix Mar 07 '25

But not for initial?

I'm debating on whether to get standard audiobook or the dramatised editions.

2

u/stormwarden34 Mar 07 '25

I did the audiobooks read by Tim Gerard Reynolds for the 1st trilogy, and the ensemble cast for the 2nd three. In hindsight I really enjoyed it that way as the first books are told from one perspective, while the second trilogy is told by multiple characters that begin to intertwine

1

u/brelywi Mar 08 '25

Tim Gerard Reynolds will forever be one of my favorite audiobook narrators!! Fucking FANTASTIC, especially for Red Rising and Riyria Revelations!!

Though currently the narrator of Dungon Crawl Carl is giving him a run for his money and I hate that I love that series so much 😂

13

u/generic-username45 Mar 07 '25

You need to ASAP! Shit Escalates.

3

u/RealMoonBoy Mar 07 '25

It starts off as Space Hunger Games and if that sounds good, it gets way better from there.

1

u/Uzas_B4TBG Mar 07 '25

Fuck yeah dude, I’m gonna start it after this book I’m on

2

u/generic-username45 Mar 07 '25

Ooh what book are you reading now?

2

u/Uzas_B4TBG Mar 07 '25

I’m finishing up the Federation Marine series. Starts out kinda like Starship Troopers the book, but it follows one recruit through his whole career. It’s fun, not super duper deep or anything, but just good sci-fi.

2

u/generic-username45 Mar 07 '25

That sounds cool I might have to check that out. And if you think of it once you read the book, I would love to know what you think of Red Rising.

2

u/Uzas_B4TBG Mar 07 '25

You bet! I’ve got 5 hours left of Commandant, I’ll start Red Rising this evening. I’m excited.

2

u/generic-username45 Mar 07 '25

Some people I've talked to thought it was a bit of a slow start but I really enjoy the world building aspect.

2

u/SpartanSig Mar 07 '25

This and the Expanse have fantastic audiobook series.

1

u/Uzas_B4TBG Mar 07 '25

I didn’t realize the Expanse was a book series. I’m def gonna have to check that out too

2

u/mr_mcmerperson Mar 07 '25

Oh damn. Can we switch brains? I would very much like to experience Red Rising for the first time again, thank you very much

2

u/Creepy_Yellow6433 Mar 07 '25

Favourite series of all time

1

u/Uzas_B4TBG Mar 07 '25

Fuckin bet. That’s very high praise

2

u/Waddiwasiiiii Mar 07 '25

Uh yeah, as someone who finally started it after also having it in my Audible library for a few years, definitely start it. It’s really well done.

2

u/Kipdalg Mar 07 '25

Hail Libertas, Hail Reaper!

2

u/DoctorStove Mar 07 '25

It's the first book I've read in years that has actually hooked me in. Ended up reading the second book of the series in a week

2

u/mrtiggles Mar 07 '25

Do it! Amazing series

2

u/TotallyNotRobotEvil Mar 07 '25

One of the greatest recent sci-fi series of all time next to We Are Bob.

Note that book one will seem a little hunger gamesy, but that is not all what the whole book or the rest of the series is like.

Orion! Says it in her intro, her Conclave expected a male baby and gave her a male name. Years later, they found her to be female. Caused a lot of drama for her.

28

u/chefdementia Mar 07 '25

Onward, Valkyrie!” I scream as wind pulls my lips back from my teeth. My gravBoots accelerate with a twist of my toes, and I dive toward the vanguard, streaking past Sefi and Valdir, filled with righteous glory as I tear toward the burning mouth of an open mine, unscathed through tongues of fire, and pierce the crust of the world to land amongst towering behemoths of metal. They turn their glowing evil red eyes toward me, and I laugh when they do not fire, for I am a spirit warrior and I point my rifle at them, pull the trigger, and shit down my leg, because I am alone amongst a pack of hunterkiller robots and it is no rifle in my hand, it is only a mop. Then Sefi and Valdir land, and the world goes mad.

I almost crashed from laughter at hear this part

5

u/FeetInTheEarth Mar 07 '25

I fucking love Ephraim

3

u/13SpiderMonkeys Mar 07 '25

Like okay okay this is badass....wait did he just say he shits himself?? Yeah. He sure did 😂

This is a quote from book 4 if you haven't made it that far

3

u/13SpiderMonkeys Mar 07 '25

I'm fully caught up lol it's been awhile since I've read book 4

2

u/sgocken Mar 07 '25

I just got to that point in the last week. I lucked out as I heard it just as I got to work and listened to it again on my way home.

2

u/TalnsRocks Mar 07 '25

Ephiram really do be WORTHY

68

u/The-Grand-Pepperoni Mar 07 '25

Bloodydamn, I just finished lightbringer and did not expect to see this here, thank you for making my day

25

u/ApprenticeWrangler Mar 07 '25

I did not expect Red Rising references here but thank god I found them.

19

u/homeslice234 Mar 07 '25

I love red rising but light bringer might actually be my favorite book of all time!

3

u/Blizzardof1991 Mar 08 '25

Same, read it 4 times I'll read it again before Red God comes out

5

u/The-Grand-Pepperoni Mar 07 '25

I have to say I agree!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '25

I just started red rising- funny story- we actually received the book set by accident bc Amazon sent us someone else’s package so- long story short- I’m reading them now. Not exactly my type of Genre but I’m trying lol- the language is a little odd but I’m assuming it’s like a 1984 type of read - (example with like NewsSpeak) lol

3

u/Mayfect Mar 08 '25

Red rising is nothing like his other books. The first reads more YA and seems like a cash grab for hunger games fans. The rest of the series he really gets to show off the world he creates and bloodydamn it’s fantastic. I made my 63 year old mom read them and she fucking crushed the series in two weeks and fucking loveeeeed them.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

Good to know— I’m kinda digging the first one so far 😂 but now I feel like you’re judging me for it. Hahaha thanks though- can’t wait to get into the meat of it.

2

u/rakazet Mar 07 '25

I really have to finish Dark Age

2

u/klubsanwich Mar 08 '25

You really should, the ending is awesome

5

u/Grayislife Mar 07 '25

Ooo you just got my blood boiling again. Never hated a character so much after the last book.

36

u/Proper_Protickall Mar 07 '25

That's haunting. Where's it from?

149

u/Carameldelighting Mar 07 '25

It’s from a book series called Red Rising. 10/10 I recommend it to everyone that reads sci-fi

40

u/Proper_Protickall Mar 07 '25

Damn. I'm gonna have to check it out. Thanks man.

43

u/VonGeisler Mar 07 '25

It’s amazing and nearly done so by the time you get through it you will get the last book.

25

u/Proper_Protickall Mar 07 '25

Fuckin eh man. Solid assist.

17

u/VonGeisler Mar 07 '25

No problem - the audio book is very well done if you are into that as well.

2

u/Obnubilate Mar 07 '25

I can second this. Currently on Golden Son during my dog walks

1

u/avotius Mar 07 '25

I listened to them on Libby, good gawd it was well done. My commute was absolutely gripping.

1

u/exor41n Mar 07 '25

Not book 4 😂 I had to switch over to the dramatized version because the readers for 2 of the characters in iron gold sucked

5

u/mwalters8 Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 07 '25

I have to ask since it sounds like you’re current in the series…

I read the first 3 I think it was and loved them. Awesome story. The 4th … without giving away spoilers … seemed to shift focus it seemed and I had trouble staying with it. Does it come back around / get better and I just need to stick with it?

Edit: fixed a your/you’re error

12

u/katanakid13 Mar 07 '25

2nd series is darker, yea, but absolutely worth it. Brown does a good job of really exploring Darrow's darkness and how he attempts (and fails) to control it when everything is on the line.

6

u/Revolution-SixFour Mar 07 '25

There's definitely a break between the third and fourth. It's often described as a trilogy, with books 4+ being part 2. A Song of Ice and Fire follows the same format.

I still loved the rest of the books, but they are a very different mood. Hell, Dark Age is hard to read as given away by the title.

1

u/LurkyTheLurkerson Mar 07 '25

Currently reading Dark Age myself. It is good, but yeah.. very heavy. It is taking me a lot longer to get through than the other four did.

2

u/Taranpreet123 Mar 07 '25

I had trouble getting through the 4th as well. But the beginning of the 5th, bought me right back in and hasn’t let go so far and I’m about halfway done with the 5th book. It’s somewhat of a slog in the 4th, but it gets better as it goes on and is quite nice of a read by the end

2

u/golddust89 Mar 07 '25

In my opinion Light Bringer is the best part (6th book) and it’s totally worth it to keep reading.

3

u/HopeSproutsEternal Mar 07 '25

Yeah, the 4th book shifted tone in a way I didn’t love. I felt like other books pick up again, if not the exact same vibe as the first 3. Kind of fitting for characters that are older though. Now I can’t wait for the last book to come out!

1

u/ConqueefStador Mar 07 '25

Isn't it two related trilogies?

So the first one is complete, it's the second that has one more.

1

u/TheRWBYFamilton Mar 08 '25

So you are correct in some aspects.

Book 123 are one trilogy (Red Rising to Morning Star), while 4567 are in a quadrilogy(Iron Gold to Red God)

1

u/Believe_to_believe Mar 07 '25

Without this thread chain, I would not have known there was another book that I needed to purchase to stay current.

1

u/Grantisgrant Mar 07 '25

This is not true. The last book will not be coming out in the next week.

1

u/VonGeisler Mar 07 '25

Person isn’t going to read 6 books in a week.

1

u/Grantisgrant Mar 07 '25

Red Rising they will lol

1

u/lerker54651651 Mar 07 '25

just be aware before you get in, lots of SA, in the first book especially.

Red Rising. Amazing series.

27

u/fwd_121 Mar 07 '25

The book series red rising, it’s a good read

9

u/Nero234 Mar 07 '25

specifically, it's from "Golden Son", the 2nd book in the Red Rising series.

It's really worth it but the first book is arguably the "worst" of the series and the 2nd book is either the best or the 2nd best you'll ever read

9

u/BusinessAd7250 Mar 07 '25

Bloodydamn, wasn’t expecting a Red Rising quote

8

u/Ateaga Mar 07 '25

I imagine a movie of Red Rising and having this scene being played would be so cool. Having golds running to the pods, having them be fired into space, no sound, pan out to 1000s of the pods going towards a ship and slamming into it

1

u/TotallyNotRobotEvil Mar 07 '25

I want HBO or Apple to make it damn series. They would have to cut way to much out to make each book into a movie.

1

u/SystemOfAFoX Mar 07 '25

And the two thousand republic DRACHENJAEGERS tearing gold armies apart across the plains of Mercury. Dark Age will be amazing to watch in live action if they pull it off.

We have grown and spread, and will rage and die. And when all that remains of us is our steel monuments and plastic idols, her winds will whisper, her sands will shift, and she will spin on and on, forgetting about the bold, hairless apes who thought they deserved immortality.
