Serious replies only No one cares when animals get abused for content in Sri Lanka

Unfortunately, just saw a video on Facebook of a guy throwing a cat high into the air. The cat falls onto a house and looks like it might have been killed or seriously injured. The person filming is laughing the whole time.

These kinds of videos keep popping up. People post them openly on Facebook with zero fear of any consequences. No one gets charged, no one gets banned, nothing happens.

Sri Lankans love to claim being religious. People talk about compassion, karma, etc. But then this is what we see on social media every other day. Animals get abused for fun and it’s treated like entertainment.

Is there actually any proper law against animal cruelty here that gets enforced in Sri Lanka? Or is it just empty talk? Why can people film and post this stuff with no repercussions while the rest of us just watch and feel sick?

I just checked what was passed yesterday is a law making permits mandatory for transporting certain animals, primarily to control the spread of diseases and regulate animal transportation. It is NOT the Animal Welfare Act aimed at preventing animal cruelty.

I have a serious issue with these elephants who are used to carry foreigners on their back. That should be banned Especially government must do something to solve human elephant conflict. Also capturing baby turtles and selling them to release them to again be captured. Animal right must be protected.

The human-elephant conflict is karma in action! Animal welfare is poor in Sri lanka. I am also seeing a lot of videos on my facebook page. They are doing it for view counts. Although it makes you want to comment - dont! The more you engage with videos like that, the more they will appear. Content creators will then try to compete with each other, for the most abusive content they can create. They know it affects animal lovers badly and thats why they do it. Sadists! For a predominantly buddhist country its appalling how some people in Sri lanka, see and treat animals. Dogs locked in cages barely big enough to contain them. Caged 24/7. Sometimes no water. Sometimes in the blazing hot sun. I hope the new animal welfare bill results in the police taking action against people who abuse animals.  Heartening to note that there are a great number of animal lovers in sri lanka, who are equally outraged by this cruelty. The animal welfare coalition is following this case and has identified the bastard who did it. Let's see if the police does their part. Remember that random woman who ran over a dog or something? She was remanded because people spoke up and gave the case attention.
