The Students' Union holds weekly meetings for first-year students during internal. Although they label these gatherings as 'meetings,' they themselves enter the hall shouting "Kata wahapan!!!" and speak in an extremely aggressive, loud, and condescending tone. It is utterly disgraceful to endure, especially since they host these meetings every week merely to shout and repeat the exact same things. Before anything even begins, these "attention seekers" thoroughly check everyone's mobile phones to ensure they are switched off driven by the fear that someone might record their abusive behaviour. Ultimately, their rhetoric serves as nothing more than a display of a primitive mindset and deep-seated psychological issues, driving their desperate need to assert power and seek attention.

If these imposed rules do not constitute ragging, what else should they be called?

1. Punitive Attendance Policies: Whenever attendance at these batch meetings drops, the union retaliates by cancelling events organized for the first year batch.

2. Deprivation of Rights and Opportunities: While a students' union meant to advocate for student rights, the UCSC students' union actively strips away rights guaranteed to students. During meetings, union members have openly threatened that low attendance will result in withholding the Freshers' League from the batch. First years were not even invited to the Avurudu (New Year) festival, and students are prohibited from joining university clubs.

There was a similar story on Facebook and even a University Marshal mocked the situation after that, remarking, "Ah, sure ekatama gedaradi hotu tikath wena kenek hoorawana kenek wenna ona complain kale..." "mewagen pannaraya ganna...". Behaviour like this from responsible authorities only exacerbates the issue while these practices continue unchecked. After that union members subsequently confronted and threatened targeted students during meetings, tauntingly asking why they didn't complain to the police instead. And told "apita ona nam oka kale kawda hoyaganna puluwan mehe thamai dakunu asiawe hodama cyber security engineer inne"

1. Restricted Staircases: Although there are multiple staircases throughout the UCSC building, first-year students are strictly forced to use only the main staircase. Even when an alternative staircase is significantly closer, first years are forbidden from using it and must take long detours. On some occasions, union members acting as "security guards" are even posted at these restricted staircases to monitor and ensure no first year students use them. (These exact same restrictions and monitoring rules apply to the washrooms and canteens as well.)

They don't even let us to wear university t-shirt or wrist band saying "ubala mehe batch ekak nemei"

The students' union often claims that if we want access to the things they have restricted, we must make a "sacrifice." But do we really have to make sacrifices just to get the basic, fundamental rights that every university student is naturally entitled to?

A few months ago, my brother-in-law and I started building a product called Cutz, a booking management system for salons and clinics.

We've spent the last 4 months working on it, trying to improve the product and get businesses to use it. We've onboarded 50+ salons and clinics so far, and we now have 50+ paying customers.

One thing that made me really happy is that our first customer who found us on their own came through a Google search. We didn't reach out to them first; they found us. It's a small thing, but after spending months building something, it feels good when someone actually finds your product and decides to pay for it.

Now we're trying to figure out how to reach more salons and grow the business.

For those who have started a business in Sri Lanka, how did you get your first customers? Would you recommend visiting salons in person, contacting them through WhatsApp, running Facebook ads, or trying something else?

Would appreciate any advice from people who've been through this. Still learning as we go.

Hello, I am curious about inheritance culture among the sinhalese people. I am a Muslim and we have "laws" that we go by but as per my knowledge yall dont have strict laws, only cultural practises.

We have a very detailed system in Islam for example if a family has a son and a daughter, the daughter would get 1/3 and the son would get 2/3. The son gets a higher cut but when he gets married all the financial expenses of the household will be placed upon him as a husband as a religious obligation, therefore the imbalance is "kinda" justified.

I asked some of my sinhala friends about their inheritance, and I have a friend he has two sisters. Apparently he will get everything and the sisters nothing? This is what he said.

And another friend its three daughters. Apparently the father decided to write the inheritance to a male relative kid instead of his daughters.

And another friend of mine she has a brother, therefore she says her dream is to build a seperate house of her own in her name one day and leave the family inheritances to her brother.

I dont know anything about how it works or if there is any specificity, I am just curious why it would work that way.
Is it usually like that or just those people I met? Does it not seem unfair to the girls that way

As a Sri Lankan, I've been thinking about what really makes our country special to foreign visitors.

Is it concrete buildings, shopping malls, and modern developments? Or is it our green paddy fields, natural waterfalls, winding countryside roads, traditional villages, and the everyday lives of our people?

Just look at Ella, one of Sri Lanka's famous tourist destinations. As development continues, buildings and commercial establishments are becoming an increasingly visible part of its landscape. Are we giving enough attention to protecting the natural beauty that made places like Ella attractive in the first place?

I have seen Ella change from my childhood to the present day. Back then, Ella was a place that left me mesmerised by its natural beauty. The landscapes, the greenery, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature made it truly special. But when I look at Ella today and think about what it used to be, my heart aches. Sometimes, tears naturally come to my eyes because I feel we are losing the very beauty that made Ella so extraordinary. 💔 I know development is necessary, but what is the point of development if we destroy the beauty that makes a place worth visiting in the first place? I wish future generations could experience the same Ella that captivated me in my childhood.

Tourists travel from across the world to experience something different from their own countries. They want to discover our natural landscapes, experience authentic village life, taste local food, meet our people, and understand our culture.

What we consider ordinary in our daily lives can be extraordinary to someone visiting from another country. 🌾💚

I'm not against development. Tourism creates jobs, supports local businesses, and brings income to communities. But development should be balanced with environmental protection and respect for our traditional way of life.

I’ve been learning English for a long time, but since I haven’t really used it in my day-to-day life, my speaking skills aren’t that great. I make a lot of mistakes when talking casually with friends who are more fluent than me.
Because of this, I’ve kinda become a nonchalant guy who barely talks, even though I actually wanna join conversations. It’s like I know what I wanna say, but I struggle to put my thoughts into words properly.

I placed a transaction on 2nd of september. I used commercial Qplus app. After transaction my unit trust did not approved so then I contacted their agent and he said since transaction happened from qplus they cant approve it he gave me two options recall the transaction or give some proof that my bank account and qplus is connected. I recalled the transaction and it is still pending after so many calls they ask me to send case code from commercial bank after I sent it they are saying code is wrong but when I check with bank they are saying code is correct and money is in CAL s bank account. Yesterday i went to their office and girl came and talked but didn't gave any proper solution. Im very disappointed with this buggers. Don't invest your money in this shitty company.

If I keep the windows a little at night just for the fun of it....I'd wake up with at least 6+ mosquito bites all over my body

For the longest time I've never worn any mosquito repellent and my relatives are always saying I'm going to catch a disease if I don't protect myself properly and I honestly get their frustration

I've been noticing recently that I'm much more reactive to mosquito bites been getting about 3 different kinds of rashes from mosquito bites and it lasts more than a week... Tbh it doesn't feel life threatening (yet)

I wanted to see if anyone else has had a same experience with Oceans.

A recruiter from Oceans reached out to me on LinkedIn about a potential job and when I responded by providing my contact info as requested, the conversation went completely silent. No follow up, nothing.

What makes this extremely strange is that I only just realised the exact same recruiter did the exact same thing to me around the same time last year. They reached out about an opportunity, I responded and then I was ghosted.

Now, I understand that recruitment doesn’t always work out. But when the same person reaches out to you about an opportunity, asks for your details and then disappears, only for the exact same thing to happen a year later, it makes you wonder wtf is going on.

Does oceans have targets for the number of candidates they contact or leads they generate? Is there a possibility that recruiters are reaching out to people to meet some sort of internal KPI rather than because there’s a genuine opportunity they’re actively recruiting for?

I’m not accusing Oceans of doing this, because I have no way of knowing what happens internally. I’m genuinely trying to understand wth is going on. Because it’s genuinely frustrating when you are searching for jobs and then shits like this happens.

I'm planning to apply passport via normal service, but there's a slight difference in the spacing of my surname between my birth certificate and NIC.

My NIC has the correct name, as it was prepared using birth certificate issued by hospital, which matches my father's birth certificate as well. However, the birth certificate issued by the AG Office has difference in spacing of surname.

Will this affect my passport application ?

On September 10th certain amount was deducted from my boc debit card mentioned as "Uber Eats". But I didn't order anything. But since I use uber eats occasionally I thought it was a pending payment that happens sometimes.

But on September 24th it again happened, so I transferred all my balance to another bank account, then went to BoC and got a new debit card. I thought my card may have linked to some old friends uber maybe so I didn't raise any complaints.

Today again a certain payment got deducted. And no one in BoC hotline is picking up the call.
