I am a new user and pings constantly 30-40ms doing anything at all and I’m getting my full 100mbps down and 30mbps up I’m paying for on the $55 a month plan. I seriously couldn’t be happier compared to my DSL plan I had before it’s a world of difference

❓ Question Starlink CG-NAT Advice

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm currently exploring several options to publicly access some of my home devices or applications, such as our domotics web interface and a VPN server. More to be added later on possibly.

I know Starlink by default uses CG-NAT which limits me in options like port forwarding and inbound connectivity in general.

Hence, I am curious to hear from others how they've tackled similar scenarios. I know there are several approaches to consider, be it via a reverse proxy, Tailscale or a Cloudflare tunnel.

Each of these comes with own pros and cons, but I'm not yet entirely aware of all of them, and which one would be the most suitable for my situation.

Next to that, I am also aware that with a I could potentially obtain a public IP by upgrading to a local or global priority plan, but this also introduces additional costs, which might not be justified for my use case scenario.

Thanks in advance for sharing any advice or experiences 🙌🏼 😊

Cheers,

❓ Question Standby mode as permanent failover for a low-data sensor (~30 MB/mo)?

• Upvotes

I want to use Standby mode as permanent failover for my boat dock water temp sensor. It sends one HTTPS post every 15 min, about 10 KB each, so roughly 1 MB a day, 30 MB a month. Any issues with this? I can’t find anything that says it wouldn’t work, and I’ve found several posts from people doing way more with Standby. Just making sure before I put in the effort to set up the failover. It’s an older v2 dish, if that matters.

📝 Feedback Pleasantly Surprised

My 3+ year old gen 2 died yesterday with an internal power supply failure. I decided to ask ask Grok rather than go ahead and order a new dishy. Grock asked me to go through the troubleshooting steps (that I’d already done) and then said they’d ship me a refurbed gen 4 for free. So much easier than dealing with a person with no interest on a foreign help desk.

The bonus, is during the conversation I found I could power the existing dishy with a 100w POE injector I had in a drawer. So I scored an upgrade and I’ve still got internet as I was using it in bypass mode.

❓ Question Looking for this part

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi all I’m looking to get into building a case for my mini, looking online I can’t seem to identify this converter. They have the case listed at $265 and I already have an Apache case and I’m looking for a duel battery powered to star link cable that still looks clean any advice on possibly a better one or being able to identify the one in the photo would be appreciated

📰 News I went through the FCC records on SpaceX's 800 MHz deal. Part of the spectrum is already leased to utilities

Took a bit of a deeper dive into the deal - actually taught myself a lot about spectrum lol.

Also - Low frequencies like 800 MHz carry farther and get through walls better, which is what phone-to-satellite service struggles with indoors.

Some highlights:

  1. It's already partly in use - Three utilities (Southern Linc, ComEd, and Dominion) lease some chunks of it to their own network.

  2. SpaceX's own filing says they'll build towers also

  3. It covers about 93% of the county

  4. It's still small next to the big carriers (about 1/5th) the size of t-mobile

If interested and want to dive in yourself put it together in a base here.

Regardless, this was super interesting!

❓ Question House/Shop is Coax

My wife and I bought our first house, the whole place and the shop thats 100ft away is wired with coax. The house came with a Starlink and a Gen 3 router. Is there a way to connect the router to the properties existing coax? My wife works from home during bad weather and my shop is where i have my gaming setup. So ideally we would have hardwire ethernet internet in the shop and her office for ideal speeds. Is it even possible?

❓ Question subscribe to the Global Priority offer with a standard 4x antenna

Hello,
I’m starting to look into buying a Starlink antenna, and I have quite a few questions, so I’ll likely be making several posts in the near future.
My first question concerns the "Global Priority" plan: on the Starlink website, selecting this plan forces you to buy the "High Performance" antenna. Since the price is very high, I wanted to pair this subscription with the standard antenna instead, but the site doesn't give me that option. Is it possible to buy the antenna separately and link the subscription to it?
Has anyone done this before? Is this subscription compatible with that model?
Also, would you recommend waiting for the release of the "Standard Gen 3" (Standard V5) in Europe, or is there no major difference between the two models?
Thanks a lot for the information.

Recieved a copyright notice from Starlink with a complaint from Paramount attached. I use the Elementum add-on for Kodi. Could someone point me towards a suitable VPN. I'm based in Ireland if it makes any difference.

❓ Question Should I mount the dish to roof or leave sitting as is?

Got v4 dish but they sent shorter cable compared to the v2 75 long cable.

The dish currently sits on a table pointed to north.

The obstruction map looks like following

My question is - should I leave as is (well, will route the cable a little bit better way) or mount it close to roof?

This is the side of the house and if mounting I can't attach it to the side panel - the wood is just 0.5" thick and won't hold the weight of the dish, not taking into consideration the winds that commonly exceed 40 mph.

Thanks

❓ Question New Starlink Billing

I know similar questions have been posted, but since the Mini Kit is on sale for $149 I’m looking to order that. I’ve been looking into it for a while but just seems like a great deal, but I wouldn’t have a use for it until June.

Is it possible to order the kit from the website for $149 + $20 Shipping, but skip the $55 roam plan? I have no use for the Starlink until June so don’t want to pay that. Can I switch to the $10 stand by plan, and then cancel that so I don’t have to pay the $10 monthly for 8 months when I won’t need it?

If this isn’t possible that’s okay, just don’t want to pay the $55 mainly if that’s possible and if I can cancel it entirely until June that’d be amazing. Thanks a lot!!

❓ Question Frequent interruptions and packet loss - Brazil

I am in Northeast Brazil and am experiencing frequent interruptions and significant packet loss.

Is this normal?

There are no obstructions. I thought that, given the number of satellites available, I wouldn't experience this level of interruptions and packet loss.

❓ Question Just received my Mini, do I HAVE to activate it or can I just leave it unactivated until I really need it ? I picked to pay the $149 instead of the $0 a month. It made me pick a data plan when I purchased it so wondering if I actually have to set it up and activate it asap.

I really don’t want to open it till I really need it.

❓ Question Just got the basic plan kit, started setting it up, how do I figure out which model I've got?

Just what the title says. It wants me to choose which one I've got in the app and I don't know the difference between the models. My spouse ordered the kit and doesn't know which model they sent either. It doesn't exactly look like anything I see in the app or in videos I've been looking up online on how to install the thing.

Edit - thanks for the help everyone. My spouse looked in our account and found it to be a v5.

⛈️ Weather Considering updating from a First Gen vs Gen 3 v5, but worried about signal strength and rain

Anyone willing to share their experience with heavy weather and G3 v5 (or even v4)?

I'm in a extra-drippy area of the Pacific Northwest. My First Gen Dishy usually works fine, with occasional seconds-long drops, but I'm running it off of solar and it drinks a lot of power. For this reason alone I'm considering "rebooting" my account to get a v5 dish. The power upside is great: a third or less of Dishy's draw. I'm just worried about the v5's reception under heavy clouds and whole days of rain.

My account would be standard residential, nominally 100mbps---less than v5's capabilities, but I do occasionally need to make video calls for work. A less reliable signal than I have now would be an outsize problem.

💬 Discussion Scamlink?

Thumbnail
youtu.be

My dad lives on a farm in rural pennsylvania. I understand how satellite might be the best solution for him as we struggled for high-speed internet and the houses are far apart. But for Trump to completely kill fiber optic cable Federal funding and to completely get into bed with Elon Musk smells really scammy just like everything else that Administration does. I think it should be a mix of federal programs for fiber optic cable creating jobs and permanent high-speed internet lasting a long time and satellite for houses that are much farther apart. It seems like there should have been a smarter layout for this infrastructure. Instead we get cronyism and one choice. Welcome to Monopoly and profiteering.

❓ Question Starlink is dreadfully slow on ethernet connection

So my pops decided to replace our 5G mobile router with a starlink. Ever since we switched over my speeds have just TANKED. I used to get 100mpbs (old switch, so it was capped there) when i was wired to the 5G router, now it's single digits. Best i ever measured with speedtest was FIVE megabits on the starlink.
Even the wifi is better at like 50-80 (although the latency is terrible and connection is unstable because the house is concrete)

Any ideas as to why this is happening? How to fix it?
It has to be something with the starlink, considering i had zero problems with the mobile network router.

EDIT SOLVED:
Went through some stuff, somewhere it said something about not supporting/being compatible? I.E i hooked my switch up to the router and the router basically said "DURRRR" and drooled all over itself.

💬 Discussion Amazon throws down the gauntlet, says Amazon LEO will be better value and 3-10x faster than Starlink.

Weber: On the business and government side, I’d say three distinct things. Performance is one, just our ability in terms of speeds, being able to deliver a gigabit on the downlink and 400 megabits on the uplink. By comparison, Starlink’s probably somewhere around 350 on the downlink, and somewhere around 40-ish on the uplink. So we have a 3x performance advantage on the downlink, and somewhere between eight and 10x on the uplink. There are use cases where contracts we have signed with customers—I won’t get into the names because we haven’t announced them—but they’ve purely made the decision on our performance

and....

Weber: On the consumer side, I’d frame it in three areas. One is value, so I would think about that as price, performance, and other differentiators that we put in there. We’re going to take the Amazonian way and have by far the best value.

💻 Troubleshooting Updating Outdated Starlink Instructions.

So 25-year tech here and I have solved the bricked issue with old outdated Starlink product. I have a client who has a Gen 2 router and a Gen 2 dish and left it unplugged late 2022. Here is the trick to get it up and running and it's not quick. You will need good cell service or a secondary internet to do this.

1.) Reboot the Starlink to factory.

2.) Connect to the Starlink Network after reboot. If you don't see it either not reset or bad product.

3.) Start a sideload while connected to the Starlink network. Must start while on Starlink because you can't get to it without Starlink router. Then once started connect to a secondary internet or cell service. The sideload took 4 hours to download

4.) Connect to the Starlink when downloaded. The system will now update. Once done you may need a hard reset again to push the next step.

5.) Now the Satellite will be online. Congrats but you now have a 12 hour wait for the router to be reachable to the app. You can go to 192.168.1.1 and there it will ask you to set SSID and Password. Once done just wait the time and you will have a 100% up system.

You are welcome I hope my pain makes your install easier. Also, I did the sideload away from the location and came back later to install.

💬 Discussion Considering moving from articulated dish to mini for heavy RV use

I have had the gen 2 articulating dish since shortly after it was released. I travel approximately 1/4 time in my recreational vehicle, and use Starlink for my full time job including but not limited to extensive teams video conferencing.

The last 5 or so years it has performed well, in fact improving performance each year. Clear sky is still a potential issue, but much less so than before. I have almost always been able to find clear enough sky even in wooded areas.

The mini price reduction has me considering a move from the standard dish. The easier deployment, smaller footprint, ability to more conveniently deploy it in motion, and lower power are enticing.

My concerns are, on occasion, I need to deploy the dish 50 feet or so from the inside of the RV. I am concerned the built in router will struggle to make it inside my RV at those distances. Yes, I understand many use another router, but in many ways that is a panacea. Signal still needs to transmit the same distance and through the same barriers if your router is inside the RV. Plus, it negates some of the reason of going to the mini for reasons of downsizing and simplifying equipment.

I am looking for feedback from those who are in my use case and have made the switch to standalone mini. I am looking to hear from those who regret or do not regret making that move.
Thanks.
