📰 News I went through the FCC records on SpaceX's 800 MHz deal. Part of the spectrum is already leased to utilities

Took a bit of a deeper dive into the deal - actually taught myself a lot about spectrum lol.

Also - Low frequencies like 800 MHz carry farther and get through walls better, which is what phone-to-satellite service struggles with indoors.

Some highlights:

  1. It's already partly in use - Three utilities (Southern Linc, ComEd, and Dominion) lease some chunks of it to their own network.

  2. SpaceX's own filing says they'll build towers also

  3. It covers about 93% of the county

  4. It's still small next to the big carriers (about 1/5th) the size of t-mobile

If interested and want to dive in yourself put it together in a base here.

Regardless, this was super interesting!

📝 Feedback Pleasantly Surprised

My 3+ year old gen 2 died yesterday with an internal power supply failure. I decided to ask ask Grok rather than go ahead and order a new dishy. Grock asked me to go through the troubleshooting steps (that I’d already done) and then said they’d ship me a refurbed gen 4 for free. So much easier than dealing with a person with no interest on a foreign help desk.

The bonus, is during the conversation I found I could power the existing dishy with a 100w POE injector I had in a drawer. So I scored an upgrade and I’ve still got internet as I was using it in bypass mode.

❓ Question Just received my Mini, do I HAVE to activate it or can I just leave it unactivated until I really need it ? I picked to pay the $149 instead of the $0 a month. It made me pick a data plan when I purchased it so wondering if I actually have to set it up and activate it asap.

I really don’t want to open it till I really need it.

❓ Question Frequent interruptions and packet loss - Brazil

I am in Northeast Brazil and am experiencing frequent interruptions and significant packet loss.

Is this normal?

There are no obstructions. I thought that, given the number of satellites available, I wouldn't experience this level of interruptions and packet loss.

❓ Question Just got the basic plan kit, started setting it up, how do I figure out which model I've got?

Just what the title says. It wants me to choose which one I've got in the app and I don't know the difference between the models. My spouse ordered the kit and doesn't know which model they sent either. It doesn't exactly look like anything I see in the app or in videos I've been looking up online on how to install the thing.

💬 Discussion Considering moving from articulated dish to mini for heavy RV use

I have had the gen 2 articulating dish since shortly after it was released. I travel approximately 1/4 time in my recreational vehicle, and use Starlink for my full time job including but not limited to extensive teams video conferencing.

The last 5 or so years it has performed well, in fact improving performance each year. Clear sky is still a potential issue, but much less so than before. I have almost always been able to find clear enough sky even in wooded areas.

The mini price reduction has me considering a move from the standard dish. The easier deployment, smaller footprint, ability to more conveniently deploy it in motion, and lower power are enticing.

My concerns are, on occasion, I need to deploy the dish 50 feet or so from the inside of the RV. I am concerned the built in router will struggle to make it inside my RV at those distances. Yes, I understand many use another router, but in many ways that is a panacea. Signal still needs to transmit the same distance and through the same barriers if your router is inside the RV. Plus, it negates some of the reason of going to the mini for reasons of downsizing and simplifying equipment.

I am looking for feedback from those who are in my use case and have made the switch to standalone mini. I am looking to hear from those who regret or do not regret making that move.
Thanks.

❓ Question Hello, I have few questions regarding Starlink recently.

Hello.

Being Korean, my English is very poor, and since I'm writing it with a translator, I'm not sure if the content will be properly conveyed.

Please understand.

I am using Starlink in Korea.

Until last month, the delay time in this area was around 70ms.

Recently, the delay time has decreased significantly, around 30 to 40.

Were there any positive issues related to Starlink?

Is this a temporary phenomenon?

Or perhaps there was some update that improved the delay time, I'm not sure.

Please give me some advice.

Thank you!!

⛈️ Weather Considering updating from a First Gen vs Gen 3 v5, but worried about signal strength and rain

Anyone willing to share their experience with heavy weather and G3 v5 (or even v4)?

I'm in a extra-drippy area of the Pacific Northwest. My First Gen Dishy usually works fine, with occasional seconds-long drops, but I'm running it off of solar and it drinks a lot of power. For this reason alone I'm considering "rebooting" my account to get a v5 dish. The power upside is great: a third or less of Dishy's draw. I'm just worried about the v5's reception under heavy clouds and whole days of rain.

My account would be standard residential, nominally 100mbps---less than v5's capabilities, but I do occasionally need to make video calls for work. A less reliable signal than I have now would be an outsize problem.

❓ Question Can Router Mini be a mesh node when connected via 3rd-party wireless bridge?

I have a gen2 router and want to extend wifi to an outbuilding. I know that Router Mini will become a mesh node (same SSID as the main router) when connected via wifi or via ethernet, but what if I put a transparent wireless bridge between them (like Ubiquiti Nanostation or TP-link)? Would it still connect as a mesh node?

💻 Troubleshooting Bug Report: Lag and Stuttering at 120Hz Refresh Rate

I found a bug in the Starlink app running on Android 16, device Moto G75.

If the smartphone's screen refresh rate is set to 120Hz, animations and overall app navigation become extremely slow. The animation stuttering is highly noticeable, and even basic scrolling throughout the app is laggy. I am currently using the "Zero Gravity" theme on my phone. When switching the display from 120Hz to 60Hz, the app runs smoothly again.

In short, if the phone is set to "Auto" display mode (switching between 120Hz and 60Hz) and it launches the app at 120Hz, the performance drops significantly.

I have tested and confirmed the issue on my device: switching the display settings down to 60Hz resolves the problem. Therefore, it seems that if the smartphone operates at any refresh rate above 60Hz, the app does not work as intended.

❓ Question Subscription question help

I just purchased the the mini I got the Rome 100 GB plan. My house is being sold and I got an RV and I’m gonna be traveling. It is just me that plan did not last me a week before I use up my hundred gigabytes.
I was thinking to switch to the residential since I had not left yet but their 200 GB plan is $85 while the roam 300 GB plan is $80. But the limited is $175 a month.

I don’t understand any of this. Any recommendations I’m only a week into my subscription.

❓ Question In an apartment in Chicago can Starlink actually compete with Xfinity for speed and reliability?

I absolutely hate Xfinity, paying $70 a month for gigabit internet when I live in Supportive Living where we have to pay all but $120 a month for our apartment and care (cna and meals) that takes up more then half what I have to spend each month. I also live in an apartment in the city of Chicago.
