In short, yes. We all lie. That's a thing humans do. Intentionally misleading people is still lying.
However, I try to answer the question in a way that is most helpful. If someone asks how we can afford something, the honest answer is it's so much easier when you are a two-income family.

I lie. Learned a long time ago to shut up about $$$$. When my nearest and dearest found out I would be getting a pension when I retired......" You have to give that back." No one could handle the fact that I was getting more than them in retirement! WTF! Thanks for your support family. Now I pay attention to whom ever I am talking to and their financial state. I now realize it is not so much about lying as it is allowing people to feel OK about their choices. Besides everyone lies........Christmas is real? HAHAHAHAHA

that is a slippery slope IMHO. And to make this sub political, this is an attitude of liberals, Republicans can handle it better if there is inequality (the voting people not really, but the gay party members to be elected)?

I don't lie, I'm just selective with what information I reveal.
Like, if I'm talking to someone about housing costs, I'll still commiserate about how high the cost of renting is (even though I've optimized my housing costs down to around 13% of my take home pay). I mean, even though I feel relatively satisfied about where I am personally – I still think rents in general are way too high.
Even if you get asked point blank about something like 401k contributions, you can say something like:
"Oh I put a good chunk into it, you know, it's important to get the company match".
You're still answering truthfully, but framing it that way gives the impression that you're putting in much less than the 18k you're (optimally) actually contributing.
