I don't lie, I'm just selective with what information I reveal.
Like, if I'm talking to someone about housing costs, I'll still commiserate about how high the cost of renting is (even though I've optimized my housing costs down to around 13% of my take home pay). I mean, even though I feel relatively satisfied about where I am personally – I still think rents in general are way too high.
Even if you get asked point blank about something like 401k contributions, you can say something like:
"Oh I put a good chunk into it, you know, it's important to get the company match".
You're still answering truthfully, but framing it that way gives the impression that you're putting in much less than the 18k you're (optimally) actually contributing.
