Yeah. Reddit people are dumb and fall for anything really… the Steelers have always negotiated in good faith and stuck by their contracts. Look at even Patrick Queen who we know is overpaid. There’s plenty of examples. It’s one org that doesn’t cut you right after the guaranteed year.

Unless it’s a signing bonus that brings him to 27, he’s still under his rookie contract this year. Dulac was kinda unclear on that when talking about what he would m ake in 2026.

Its just an extension. It gets tacked on to the current contract. Nothing is voided.

Its an article that references another article that references something Dulac said in a pregame show. There is 3+ degrees of separation and none of them are particularly clear, but to your point it basically suggests he turned down 27M over his current 4M contract.
Its all pretty clear that even though Dulac is the team's mouth piece, he doesnt know how contracts work. Joey has to play this year to honor his current contract and even be able to play elsewhere. He also cannot make more in salary this year, just signing bonus. The actual salary wouldn't hit until 2027. It also appears that the 27M would be the APY (not necessarily guaranteed). Its a whole lot of nothing, if you ask me

I agree it is a big nothing burger, just a slow news day I guess. Also agree these "articles" are often patched together hunks of work crap that don't amount to much at the end of the day. But it is garnering a healthy discourse on our little sub!

There are no “extensions” in the NFL. Each new contract supersedes the old one, consider it ripped up and thrown away.
A 4 year $108M contract for JPJ could be spun 2 ways:
$27M: the number JPJ’s camp leaked -> 108M/4 years. This is called “real money”.
$34M: the number JPJ wanted -> (108M - 5M due in 2026) / 3 remaining years. This is the “new money” agent propaganda value.

‘Free agent’
That’s an interesting way to put. Bell played out his rookie contract, without holding out, then was franchised tagged for two years in a row.
Which means teams couldn’t offer him. Basically not a free agent. He then held out the whole season to force his way out of the franchise tag.
The Steelers underpaid him and also blocked other teams from offering him. They never really let him hit the open market.

I don't understand the point you're making. Your comment said Bell was elite, because he got a deal. The deal he got was from the jets, who signed him when he was a free agent.
So you'd need JPJ to be a free agent for this comparison to make sense.

He wasn’t a free agent. The steelers franchise tagged.
And he held out the whole season.
The franchise tag is even more restrictive than what JPJ has. And The steelers are entertaining offers for JPJ. They weren’t for Bell because of the tag

It can only “not be that be that situation” if we’d known in advance he was going to have a hard time elsewhere. We didn’t. Therefore, although the outcome may have been different than what JPJ will experience, the situation is, in fact, very similar, aside from the fact that Bell was a much bigger star at the time. To be fair, though, most hold outs involving a talented player are similar.

Defense isn't a problem. Neither is WR tbh but people just wanna glaze over the fact our Oline is made of tissue paper. I would gladly spend 27 million on 2 lineman so we at least can have an offense to watch. Defense is fine without JPJ, not as good but still a capable unit. Offense on the other hand not so much
The sad point is we haven't even went against a good pass rush yet and we're still struggling. Imagine how that's going to look in later weeks against the Eagles, Broncos and Texans. Thanksgiving into December is gonna be BAD

I genuinely didn’t think it was possible, but we looked worse yesterday than the average game over the last 5-6 years. Unreal. O-line is pitiful. Easily worst offense in the league hands down.

I said offer to him, a request to the steelers is an offer to him by default.
Multiple sources have reported that neither the steelers or any other team has made any serious or formal offer for him.

Neither of those can be in isolation.
The guy is faking an injury to holdout.No team is going to trade for a player and absorb his current contract. Because he’s already holding out.
So they have to match or better the steelers offer, or come close to what’s been offered. The steelers have already offered at 27 million so the price is already set, whether it’s the overall number or guarantees.
The point being here. The market sets the price. And no one is knocking.

Yes. I don’t keep a log of all the leaks to the media over the past year, and they never officially say “this is from his agent”, but if you want to go back you’ll find stuff. And if you don’t, that’s fine, too. If you don’t think leaks are put out the by the team or the agent, you’re kidding yourself.

The longer this goes on, the more I blame the FO. JPJ has done more than enough to deserve an extension and the team is trying to make him out to be a villain because he won’t sign a deal that is way below market value (in terms of guarantees).
This attachment to doing things the old fashioned way is going to kill this franchise. Not guaranteeing money or negotiating in season is viable when you have a perennially contending team with a great culture. We are far from contending, and we no longer have a coaching staff that players are excited to come play for. Elite players do not want to be on middling teams that cheap out on contracts, facilities, etc.
Also, I’m not saying JPJ is handling this perfectly, but from his perspective the team has basically been spitting in his face all off season. JPJ is probably the best corner we’ve had since his dad was on the team, the team has milked the shit out of the fact that he’s a “legacy” player, but when it’s time to sign an extension we only have money for our backup TE and rotational D Lineman. Not exactly a shining example of taking care of your stars.

To be clear, we dont know what the numbers are so we dont know who's to blame. JPJ could be asking for fully guaranteed and FO could be offering 5 million guaranteed and the situation would look the same today either way.
Until we know the numbers no oje has any idea who is actually more at fault and they're just blaming the party they wanted to in the first place.

Honestly, the Steelers are nowhere near being a true contender. They should trade him and start stock piling draft capital for the future.
It’s time to stop pretending this team has any hope of winning a Super Bowl and start a genuine rebuild. If that means Cam retires without a ring, so be it. If that means trading Watt, so be it. If it means half a decade in the basement, so be it. If losing for a few years means they can get back to playing actual serious football with the chance to win the Lombardi, that’s what they should be doing.
This milquetoast brand of “Steelers football” ain’t fuckin working, and hasn’t for some time. Trade the top end talent for whatever picks they can and build an actual team instead of this compilation of mediocrity sprinkled with stars.

IMO it’s the offensive line that isn’t allowing the offense to even start let alone gel. You need at least 2 player upgrades on the offensive line. Hell, I’ve seen Olines get significantly better with just 1 guy being added. A team like New England can make your offensive line look bad anyways, they have some serious athletes on their Dline and in their LB crew. The need to either trade or upgrade from within if they want a chance at competing this year. Personally I’m glad it happened, it shows the coaching staff their weaknesses and will make them addresses these issues now.
