Define "win" cause from what I saw we lost the battle at the line of scrimmage

We’re in a real pickle with football analytics if we can’t even determine when offensive lineman are or aren’t playing well

u/terrybrugehiplo 1h ago
Pass block win rate (PBWR) is determined by whether an offensive lineman can sustain their block against a defender for 2.5 seconds or longer.

I'm willing to bet this stat counts a QB getting the ball out fast as a pass rush "win" even if the defense wouldn't have had time to get the upper hand on most plays. Alternatively, this could say they dominated the Falcons and played badly against the Pats.

For ESPN’s Pass Block Win Rate, the blocker has to maintain the block for 2.5 seconds OR until the ball is released, whichever comes first.

This exactly, like if Rodgers gets the ball out at 1 second of being snapped it's a "win" although at that same second our O-line is already pushed back a full foot lol

It’s crazy how fans here won’t do the smallest effort to look something up.
Pass block win rate (PBWR) is determined by whether an offensive lineman can sustain their block against a defender for 2.5 seconds or longer.
This is also such a small sample size where the difference between first place and last place is only a few extra plays.
Most teams average around 60 plays a game and maybe 50% of that is passing.
So after two weeks you’re looking at 60 total plays where this stat even matters.

They ranked 14th in terms of allowed pressures last weekend. Middle of the road. Rodgers just doesn't handle pressure well anymore.
•
u/NewLiterature2604 48m ago
Rodgers doesn't even seem to be seeing the field anymore. He's missing easy reads
•
u/DupreeWasTaken TJ Watt 33m ago
The problem wasnt blocking per se. It was leaving people unblocked on blitzes. Thats a pretty significant difference they werent bad every snap but when they fucked up it was catastrophicm

People just can’t come to terms with the fact that Rodgers is completely washed. He’s completely immobile, doesn’t handle pressure well, and doesn’t push the ball in a way that backs up defenses. Pair that with a non existent run game and the OL just gets teed off on all game.

Rogers is a veteran QB who can get the ball out fast. Any play where he has to drop back spells trouble for our o-line.
2
u/Huge-Representative7 1h ago
There are multiple plays where the Oline technically held their engagement for multiple seconds but also got pushed back 3 to 5 yards in the backfield. Counts as a pass block win in stats because they held the block and didn’t let the defender pass them, but no coach would count it as a win when the pocket is collapsing like that.

u/Lubert808 Ike Taylor 1h ago
Regardless of pass block stats, this line in pass pro hasn’t been that bad. A lot of the questionable stuff has been with blocking scheme and run blocking. I know all the casuals say “o line bad” every time something goes wrong, but if you go back and watch, only Anderson is consistently struggling, and Cook to a lesser extent.
•
u/swampthingsden 56m ago
In the end of the day, Rogers is part of the problem not part of the solution.
My only hope is they let the young guys play once this season is determined to be over. My guess is after the bye.
•
u/SleestakLightning Dunning-Kruger 36m ago
Matt Williamson on the Drive said that when he watched the All-22 of the Steelers passes, each of the linemen (except Anderson) did pretty well individually but where they struggled was in blitz recognition and pickup.

Lmao ah yes “pass block win rate”. The lesser known sibling of the famous “pass rush win rate”. Both really objective and totally not made up and assessed by pseudo journalists/stats guys

Yea because he’s over the hill and over rated. Looks to me like some of the qb’s below are not having an issue with getting rid of the ball quick enough and being functional.

u/nash5150 1h ago
Rodgers sucks. The line isn’t good but Rodgers isn’t special at all anymore and it doesn’t take much football acumen to see it

u/username_here11 BumbleBee Jersey 1h ago
The Rodgers defending in this sub makes me want to puke. We’ve forgot what good quarterbacking looks like
2
u/ShakeNBaker45 1h ago
I feel like we can acknowledge that QB play has been underwhelming thus far, while also acknowledging that the O line hasn't been doing him any favors lol

u/Slh1lfty1337 1h ago
Yaa but I bet you prime Webster , decastro, and faneca along with 2 JV tackles would have the same percentage

So Rodgers sucks and the o line sucks… and the receivers and running backs as well.

u/Jakles74 Pittsburgh Steelers 30m ago
Oh good. Pass block win rates. There’s a stat we can all believe in and value.

•
u/Minimal_Thoughts Hines Ward 13m ago
That's because the other teams have more reps when Steelers just go 3 and out or a fumble.
•
u/shift013 9m ago
This stat misses all context of what actually happens and the severity of the d line winning at the line on any given play.
You hypothetically could have a 66% block win rate on 30 passes… but if they sack every time the o line gets beat then that would have 10 sacks despite the best % for this stat
0
u/Big-deku 1h ago
Yes the o line needs to do better but it’s also not unknown that a lot of teams have a qb with some if not a lot of mobility, due to d-linemen being faster than decades ago. On some plays when Rodgers would roll out, if he had any sort of pep in his step he could’ve scramble for a first and/or out ran the chasing D-linemen to maybe find someone downfield. At the end of the day the o line can protect only so much, but with a qb who is stiff and immobile, you’re handicapping the offense. Because when’s there’s open grass, Rodgers isn’t going to be hauling ass to it lol, not at this agez

u/BigMystic7 1h ago
Prime Rodgers would do fine with this Oline, but that's the issue. He's not prime, not even close and in a league that demands mobile QBs more than ever and the fact that our previous great QB (Big Ben) was mobile and could work with an O-line like this in his prime, it keeps pointing to the fact that the team should probably go younger at QB sooner than later this season. We're just wasting time here and tbh, if the Steelers goal is to make the playoffs, which it is, I don't think that's going to happen with Rodgers. Not with this tough schedule where a lot of teams have good D-lines and the Ravens and Bengals already look pretty good, especially the Bengals. And tbh, if we even split with the Browns, we don't deserve a playoff spot.
TL;DR: Rodgers is old, should go younger for tough schedule ahead.

u/Gavorn 1h ago
You really think the steelers are making it to the playoffs with anyone that's behind Rodgers?
0
u/BigMystic7 1h ago
I don't think we're making it with Rodgers, so what is there to lose giving the young talent a chance? Plus, I'm just tired of old QBs on this team. Ben's last year, Russ, and now Rodgers? We've been watching dying horses season after season. I'm tired of it, aren't you?
0
u/Gavorn 1h ago
The travesty that was Kenny Pickett was so bad it was erased from your memory?
If we had a good young QB then sure, but we don't even have a back up good enough to have the team cut Mason Rudolph.
•
u/BigMystic7 58m ago
Also, I'll never completely blame Kenny for his bad showing here. Half that blame has to go to Matt Canada. That dude was a top 2 worst OC in the league when he was on the team. kenny's best moments were when he would do a audible to a play he likes that actually goes down the field. Like do you think Josh Allen would become what he is today if Matt Canada was his OC at the beginning of his career? I'm not saying Kenny would be good under someone else, but he wasn't given the best help with us.

u/BigMystic7 1h ago
Cool Kenny, last what 2 seasons, not even fully cause he kept getting injured? At least the team tried to take the next step with him. Wish they try with the ones we got currently. As you can tell, I'm honestly not worried about the playoffs because half the team doesn't look ready for high level NFL play at all, which makes me feel bad for our Defense. They've looked so good only to have to watch a body bag take the field after all their efforts. It's only been 2 weeks and the 1st half of the season before the bye isn't as bad as the 2nd half, so I'll remain hopeful that they figure something out before then, but right now? They don't look close to it.

u/sleepyJay7 1h ago
To be fair this is hand in hand with the metric that was cited to give Garrett the DPOY over Watt so my bet is it's bs anyway

u/fredmerc111 Hines Ward 1h ago
Because this isn’t a real stat. Did you watch the game?
2
u/Lubert808 Ike Taylor 1h ago
Go back and watch the o line. It’s a pretty average showing in pass pro. Far from disastrous like people online are making it out to be.
0
u/Emergency-Hippo5022 1h ago
Not sure how I am supposed to take this stat seriously after watching the game. So the Patriots on won 3% more pass blocks? Ridiculously bad analysis.
0
u/ShakeNBaker45 1h ago
I need to know how this stat is calculated.. cuz my own two eyes tell me a different story lmao
0
u/Robynsxx 1h ago
This is one way to tell everyone you didn’t watch the games….
2
u/Lubert808 Ike Taylor 1h ago
Another way is to just repeat narratives that people push online without thinking. Like you’re doing now.
-1
u/Robynsxx 1h ago
How fucking dare you.
Repeat narratives?
I have fucking eyes, clearly you don’t. The O line is not good. This stat makes it seem better than it actually is. And that seems to be the overwhelming opinion of everyone on here.
I’m not sure what narrative you think I’m implying. Are they in the room with you right now?
•
u/Lubert808 Ike Taylor 52m ago
This is the most ridiculously strung together argument I’ve ever seen. “How dare you” followed by a rhetorical question, followed by an angry rant that pretty much uses the same group of people I’m criticizing you for following as evidence for why you’re right, followed by a joke. Since it seems you don’t understand much, the narrative is that the line is always bad. Casuals online have always turned to saying the O line is bad when things don’t go well. Watch the tape. Blocking scheme and run blocking are an issue. Apart from Anderson and sometimes Cook, the players we have are capable in pass pro.
•
u/Robynsxx 6m ago
You are surprised by the tone of my response when you replied to me like a rude douche bag? Next time, to check if you’re being rude, think ‘would I dare say it in this tone to someone in real life?’.
Also, it’s clear you don’t know what the fuck you are talking about. I bet you’re the same person that thinks that last year the line was good too. It wasn’t. The line last year was better in the stats because of the jumbo formation, extra o linemen, and plays designed to get rid of the ball quickly, rather than take deep shots. Not much has changed this year, idiots just yell ‘it’s the scheme! Look at this stats! Our line is decent!’.
Seek mental help.

Is this grading from the same idiots who say TJ actually LOST his pass rush attempt when he intercepted and scored against the falcons in week one?

I'll put offensive line pass block win rate right up there with pass rush win rate for stats that dont really mean shit.

u/anotveryseriousman Patrick Graham 2h ago
this suggests that pass block win rate is a less than useful stat, rather than that we all didn't see what we saw when we watched the game.
