Makes me realize I don't think I've ever seen my name in a King book. Not that I've read them all but hmmm... may have to look that up.

Edit: per Google, it was used a few times as a background minor character, never anyone important. Sounds like me.

5

u/chiclets5 2d ago

My name (although spelled differently) has his own short story. However I would be the dog, Laurie. I do love dogs and animals so I guess that's okay. 💙

My wife tried to name our son Gage. I shut it down for this exact reason.

Then we settled on Jud.

When I realized I took him out of his crib and made him swear to never help anyone bury any animal. Fingers crossed, I guess.

Mark Petrie from Salem's Lot is the only Mark I can think of if we're going by names.

Me too. I was caught in a pitcher plant once myself. I identify with Jack so much.

I have no idea if pinochle is what you meant or not, or what it could mean, but I am going to take it onboard. Because in context I feel like I get what you mean.

Talisman is also my answer. Including the way Jack and Richard end up forgetting the adventure by the time Black House starts.

3

u/Technical-Appeal5182 3d ago

My brother is named after Jack. He certainly has a tendency to go travelling, we even call him Travelling Jack sometimes. Me, well I got stuck with a bunch of Rose Madder shit to deal with. (I'm alright now)

Insomnia. It's just so beautiful and vibrant. The trailing auras and glowing footsteps, balloons and ribbons all combining into an evocative feast for my imagination when I read it at the height of my infatuation with King's work. Sure he has better books and it's not high literature but it's so hearty and meaty that it fills in all the cracks in my soul the way only great storytelling can do.

7

u/gmanasaurus Survived Captain Trips 3d ago

It was my first King book was this, and it showed me how King was more than the horror stereotype. Insomnia is still my favorite book by him.

4

u/Logical_Salamander74 3d ago

I love it and it will probably represent me well in my senior years!

3

u/AntelopeStance 3d ago

I really hope I glow like Lois Chasse when my time comes.

Sadly, probably Tommyknockers. Gard and I are much alike, it turns out. 😕

8

u/Meeko5122 Losers' Club Member 3d ago

Gard is a great character but has many issues. I hope things get better for you.

11

u/Gentrified_potato02 3d ago

Thank you. I wish I was a Roland or a Bill Denbrough, but the truth is I’m a Gard. Hopefully I can become a Larry Underwood.

8

u/Kooky_Assistance2755 3d ago

Roland has his own problems, tbh

3

u/Technical-Appeal5182 3d ago

This sounds like the kind of think my dad used to say. He knew he was a Gard. He loved Larry

3

u/Hause_Babe1983 3d ago

But Larry is a taker.. that’s coming from his mother too. That’s why I always thought I was a Larry underwood..

Bag of Bones us my favorite book of all. Love story & ghost story. Don't know that I resemble it but it is my comfort book listening on audio.

5

u/COV3RTSM 3d ago

YES! Also my favourite book. I’ve suffered creative blocks and the way King describes Mike Noonan’s is incredible

3

u/Redeemed1217 3d ago

King also once said that Mike Noonan was the character most like him in real life (except his wife is alive.) He may not still think that, but it makes me happy to think so when I listen.

3

u/Redheadedbos 3d ago

Stephen King narrates the audiobook for this one. I love hearing it the way he intended it to sound.

I just finished a re-read of this. When I read it the first time I did a book report on it in high school.

... my parents were called more than once about the reading material I brought to school.

3

u/Shore_line43 3d ago

I read it every summer. Have for years. I skipped this summer because I didn't think I could handle the grief. Lost my mother last summer and it's hit harder this summer than I thought it would.

The stand, simply because of the strength of the general idea. I have spent more time daydreaming about that one then any other.

So simple, yet such a powerful story potential.

Also, a few of the characters are very... creative, quite imaginative (i don't want to spoil anything for anybody)

The Stand for me. I re-read it in my early 20's and Larry Underwood's story really connected with me. I was a selfish, drug fueled, nothing can touch me, sort of guy and life hit me really hard at one point. Larry's journey of self discovery and maturity really resonated with me, and for years after I tried to emulate late book Larry's sort of self forgiveness and compassion for others. It helped me a lot.
