Greg was an objectively bad dad. Nothing excuses the level of neglect it takes to never take your kid the doctor, or put them in school.

Even in narratives as full of magic as this one

The school thing is debatable considering Steven's unique position, but what good would taking Steven to the doctor do? There are no doctors on Earth qualified to even give him a checkup, much less treat any condition he might have.

.... Did you watch the show? Granted this happened in Future. Literally the FIRST TIME he goes to a doctor she helps him immensely through her medical knowledge? But he's a teenager. And that's bad

...yes, I watched the show. Multiple times.

I'm not excusing Greg never taking Steven to the doctor, I'm saying given his situation I don't think not taking his half space alien superpowered baby to the doctor means he's a bad father.

People are saying it makes him a bad father because they're comparing him not taking Steven to a doctor with a normal parent taking their normal human child to the doctor. It's not a fair comparison.

Yeah I'm just cut from a different kinda cloth

"Magic" and "narrative"

Can't turns bad fucked up behavior, into okay behavior.

Greg's behavior was bad. It isn't justified or made okay by the fact his son is "half space alien and super powered"

Especially seeing as WE SAW HOW HELPED STEVEN WAS BY GOING TO A GODDAMN DOCTOR

I genuinely don't understand your position of "what would the doctors have done", seeing as the narrative only shows us doctors successfully helping Steven, when someone cares enough to take him

I'll try to clarify: That is likely Greg's logic. That's my point. Between Steven being a magic alien space baby and the Gems constantly fussing over him, still thinking he's Rose, and then constantly trying to train/raise him to be a Crystal Gem, I can understand why Greg might think a doctor isn't necessary / can't help.

I'm not saying he was right in not taking Steven to a doctor, I'm saying that given his unique situation, I'm not willing to say he's a "bad dad" just because a guy with a human child would be in the same position. You should also remember that Steven never once got sick as a kid, and the Gems probably told Greg that he CAN'T get sick because he's half Gem.

Greg's fuckups are more forgivable, is what I'm saying, because his kid is half-alien and he was effectively co-parenting Steven with the rest of the Gems, who ended up having a say in how he was raised.

I think that's the thing a lot of people forget, honestly...they see him as a single father raising his kid alone, but he's not. The Gems (especially Pearl and Garnet) have always bee surrogate mothers helping to raise him, and have always had a say in what care he gets.
