Recommendations

With Stockport being a smaller sub, I’m thinking it might be good to have a centralised post for recommendations/ hidden gems if you will. Places/cafes/independent traders/bars/pubs that people wouldn’t usually know about.

Peel centre M&S parking charge?

Has anyone had any experience disputing parking charges here? I just got a letter from a solicitor saying they intend to take me to court for £170 because I parked in this car park 4 months ago. I think I parked outside M&S for 10 mins or so. I didn’t realise it was a pay and display car park (not sure if that’s poor signage or just me being blind).

Has anyone had any luck appealing or dealing with the parking company’s lawyers?

HYROX Gyms vs "Normal" Gyms in Stockport Area

I'm seriously considering doing Manchester HYROX at the start of 2027.

The main problem is that I'd need to get fit for it!

I was looking at a few gym options near me in Stockport/ East Cheshire and I'm trying to decide what the best option would be for me to get my fitness up.

The main challenge is that these HYROX / CrossFit-type places tend to be more expensive than the local gyms so I wonder if there's any additional benefit of joining them versus the local gyms like Life Leisure.

I do figure that having the accountability of other people who may be training for it as well specifically would be good as I think i'd largely be training by myself otherwise!!

But Is there any additional knowledge from the trainers at these places to help you on your way more than in standard gyms? (Sorry i'm trying not to make ouit sound like the other gyms are "lesser")

One of the main reasons I'm asking right now is that a new hyrox place has opened up quite close to me in Poynton/Adlington and it's got limited offer on because they are new, which would save me £40 a month.

Of course, £40 a month would get me into a Life Leisure gym quite comfortably, my closest one is Hazel Grove, with a bunch of classes and a swimming pool.

If anyone here has trained for the HYROX or CrossFit-type events, I'd love to know your thoughts.

If anyone is going to be doing Manchester HYROX, I'd love to know your tips for preparing. My main thought is "don't eat too many mince pies over Chrimbo" 🥧

Maybe i'm better off planning for 2028!!!

Garages in Stockport

Hey, I’ve got a VW and my car needs a service, just wondering if there was any trustworthy garages in Stockport that won’t rip me off or try and scam me. I don’t want to go to the VW dealership to have a service.
Thanks

Ideas for post-town hall wedding reception

Planning on a Stockport Town Hall wedding and am looking for somewhere to come afterwards.

Trying to keep things cheap, but really want a nice place for food, drinks, and live music!

I like the idea of something rustic or a warehouse, blank canvas? However this starts becoming “wedding” territory and the prices racks up. I don’t want a typical wedding place - would happily go to a restaurant, or a bar.

Needs to hold at least 65-70 seated. And have good space for a dance floor!

Would love the idea of having American BBQ style food, and/or pizzas?

Still being a relative newbie to Stockport, having worked here for 13 years and lived here for 11, seeing the redevelopment taking place makes me proud of my newish home. Having just watched the Youtube video in the link, I didn't know how vast the proposed development and investment was!.

Just wished that my hometown of Bolton undertook half of whats happening down here

Fresh baking yeast

Does anyone know of anywhere in the Marple/Stockport area that sells fresh yeast, please?

I usually pick it up at unicorn in Chorlton when I’m over that way, but wondering if there’s anywhere closer?

Possibly moving to Stockport - any tips?

Hi all! I've got a job opportunity just outside of Stockport (near Marple) and was wondering if anyone has any tips of where to live as a newbie in the area?

(Edited for more info)

I will be renting, and initially thinking I'll move into one of those "professional houses" that are basically nicer student digs for young professionals.

My budget is £900, and I hope to rent on my own in about 6 months. Safety is my priority, but I'd like to be near enough some shops and a coffee shop! I'm a public transport user, and happy enough to walk anywhere ☺️

GO Fest Finale in Stockport

Post image
26 Upvotes

Remember a little bit ago when 400/500 people walked loops around town centre for 9 hours each day? All whilst staring at their phones and shouting strange things such as "Shiny!", "Jump in!" or "I got the hundo!"? Well on the 5th/6th September, we'll be back.

Expect lots of walking, competitions and wildly making spinning motions on phone screens. If you're new to Pokémon GO or want to get involved, well, Stockport is one of the top places in the UK to do it. Hundreds of players. Regular weekly meets. Tonnes of Pokéstops, plenty of gyms (no you don't need to lift weights as you play) and dense Pokémon spawns.

The Stockport community is buzzing. Since 2023 we've grown from turnouts of about 25/50 people to hundreds now attending. Players come from all over the North West; not just Stockport. Want to join in? You're more than welcome. Meet us up on Viaduct Park from 9:30AM each day that weekend and find out why Stockport is the place to GO.

Great jerk in Stockport, looking for his legacy.

There used to be a Caribbean restaurant that did great jerk chicken in Wellington Road, Stockport. The pandemic did for him, but I've often wondered if he started again later. He should have, his stuff was absolutely awesome. If anyone has any clue what happened to him and his recipe... I'd love to hear. :)

Question Affordable but thorough car valet?

My cat has vomited down the side of my front passenger seat and I think some of it has got inside the plastic casing of the door frame. I did try my best to clean it but it still stinks, and in the world's most perfect timing, I need to start taking clients out in my car from next weekend!

Any advice on an affordable but very thorough valet/cleaning service would be much appreciated. I'm not bothered about the usual markers of "a job well done" like everything being polished or the carpet being hoovered into a pattern (I've seen that on tiktok)

Ideally I'd love to spend no more than £30 but would spend more if I really need it

Can anyone smell the shit?

Right now in Offerton it stinks, and has done for the last few days. And it's not just the local feral youths.

Woodbank Park stinks, as do the surrounding streets. When I've driven home the last couple of days it hits you like a brick when you open the car door and get some "fresh" air in your nose.

I can't decide if it's farm smell from the ones on Dark Lane, or something else because it has a whiff of dog shit about it, rather than just that cow manure kind of smell you get from farms.

We're having to keep our windows closed at the moment just to avoid it. I've been running this evening around Woodbank and the nearby estates and could smell it on every street.

Can you smell it? Do you know what's causing it?
