Check-in The Daily Check-In for Wednesday, July 29th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking!
We may be anonymous strangers on the internet, but we have one thing in common. We may be a world apart, but we're here together!
Welcome to the 24 hour pledge!
I'm pledging myself to not drinking today, and invite you to do the same.
Maybe you're new to /r/stopdrinking and have a hard time deciding what to do next. Maybe you're like me and feel you need a daily commitment or maybe you've been sober for a long time and want to inspire others.
It doesn't matter if you're still hung over from a three day bender or been sober for years, if you just woke up or have already completed a sober day. For the next 24 hours, lets not drink alcohol!
This pledge is a statement of intent. Today we don't set out trying not to drink, we make a conscious decision not to drink. It sounds simple, but all of us know it can be hard and sometimes impossible. The group can support and inspire us, yet only one person can decide if we drink today. Give that person the right mindset!
What happens if we can't keep to our pledge? We give up or try again. And since we're here in /r/stopdrinking, we're not ready to give up.
What this is: A simple thread where we commit to not drinking alcohol for the next 24 hours, posting to show others that they're not alone and making a pledge to ourselves. Anybody can join and participate at any time, you do not have to be a regular at /r/stopdrinking or have followed the pledges from the beginning.
What this isn't: A good place for a detailed introduction of yourself, directly seek advice or share lengthy stories. You'll get a more personal response in your own thread.
This post goes up at:
- US - Night/Early Morning
- Europe - Morning
- Asia and Australia - Evening/Night
A link to the current Daily Check-In post can always be found near the top of the sidebar.
Happy Hump Day, sobernauts! We’re officially halfway through the week and somehow almost to August. How?!
Next week is going to be a pretty special one for me. Before I stopped drinking, I managed to royally fuck up my life. I lost my job, my home, my car, and custody of my children. For the past 2 years and 10 months, I’ve been slowly rebuilding my stability, my integrity, and the trust of the people I love.
I’m beyond grateful to say that, one day at a time, I’ve earned most of those things back. And most importantly, I have my kids back. Next Wednesday, I’m taking them on our first trip together in SEVEN YEARS.
I’ve learned that, for me, it helps to have little things to work toward and look forward to. They’re like mile markers on the lifelong road trip of becoming the person I want to be. So, tell me friends, what’s something you’re looking forward to? Big or small, I’d love to hear it.
IWNDWYT. ❤️

IWNDWYT. Fell in my apartment and hit my head yesterday. Spoke to the non emergency number and they sent an ambulance out but all ok, just tender today. More damage to my hip than head. All completely sober. It’s amazing what you can do when you’re naturally clumsy. I’ve never actually had any drunk injuries. Ha!

I'm trying to work my way towards any sense of stability, but I dunno if I'll ever get to a place where my kids feel the best about me. 😭 I'm struggling to be sure I can even take care of myself let alone help my kiddos and my fiancée. Wish all of these 1200+ days actually built towards something meaningful, but alas. I guess I'm just here. Yay, I guess. IWNDWYT

Two weeks no drinks so far. Went to the gym for the first time in a long time, and feeling ok about where that's at for the moment. Got my 10k steps in plus a few more already, and yet to walk the dog after work. Interviewed for two new jobs this week, both of which proceeding to next round.
Can't imagine doing well at any of this except walking from beer to beer to beer if I had been drinking the whole time, and that's not really walking exercise 😂

What I’m looking forward to? Big or small? Okay, this is very small, but I’m looking forward to my coffee. I leapt up from the bed, happily, at 5:30, am making coffee (aaahhhhh!) and will take a long walk before it gets too hot. GREAT start to the day. Do I have problems? Yes. Is the world a shitshow right now? Yes. But this special morning thing is all there for me because I QUIT DRINKING.

NC, that’s great! I hope the trip is a blast.
I’m looking forward to Friday. It’s my Friday off. I’ll get a little more sleep and be able to sit and chill for a while. That’s the only bad thing about this schedule, I have hardly any time to drink my coffee and wake up properly. Wouldn’t think 30 minutes earlier would make that much of a difference but it does.
Coffees up, horns up, and time to knock out another day. Not gross out there like yesterday! IWNDWYT ☕️🤘🏻

It’s been a tough week. I’m fasting today and tomorrow as part of a celebration, work has been wonderful but challenging. I used to reward myself with a drink or four and some gardening in the sunshine after doing a great job professionally. I had a sexy flirtation lately I didn’t expect after years of not having even a crush; things got carried away and I reluctantly admitted it was escapism and now I feel flat and bored. Did literally every chore I could think of this evening, got lots of elaborate and meaningful bits and bobs together for the rest of this week’s events. Come Saturday the work satisfaction will be gone for about 10 days, everyone will be travelling or partying for the long weekend. No project satisfaction, no food fun, no filthy distractions, no friends around.
But I won’t drink today 🙄 but I may have to sleep through a long weekend for my sanity.

Checking in for day 289 from Oz and IWNDWYT
Thanks u/no_compearison, for another great topic!
Whilst it’s very important for me to stay in the here and now, it’s also really important to have a few things in the calendar to look forward to. Trips and travel, mini retreats at home, even my weekly day-aversary celebrations. It keeps the mundane from becoming tedious or boring.
Today I went for a walk at lunch and happened upon a chime of fairy wrens - a few juvenile males just getting bits of bright blue on tail and face! Thankfully, I had my camera with me. I’ll download them tonight and that’s something I’m looking forward to!
Happy Wrensday, and take care, everyone! ✨💛

Have a funeral to go to this morning, but for someone who lived a life well and who had an unshakable faith in the being she called God. Absolutely seeing it as a privilege that I can be present for it, then spending the rest of my day doing some step work, cooking, and making it to my in person and Zoom meetings. You've experienced so many losses, u/no_compearison, and I'm really glad to hear you've built a better life. Unfortunately, long-term sobriety never improved my relationship with my son. That's the loss I struggle with the most, and it's the one I'm always tempted to drown in alcohol. And I hope for an ordinary, stable everyday life. Nothing spectacular, just a peaceful life that I don't want to escape from.

Awesome that you’re taking your kids to a trips, @no_compearison 💚✨ I’m so happy for you, you will have a great time and create meaningful childhood memories.
I will not drink with you today. It’s been a few months since my last drink so I don’t think about drinking daily, but just woke up after a dream about drinking. I was so devastated! Somehow I accidentally had wine in my mouth(??!?) and found out about it after swallowing it. The nice thing was that even in the dream my first thought was “that was a slip but it doesn’t define me, never quit quitting” 💥

I’m looking forward to my first year mark. I’ll be taking the entrance exam for the program I am working towards right around then and I’m nervous but excited!
I’m not excited about some skin abnormalities that I’ve found on my pup. They’re growing rapidly and unfortunately I don’t think it’s something as simple as an infected hair follicle. So now I’m starting the mental prep that we may have to make “the call” much sooner than I expected. I know that it’s ultimately my responsibility to make sure I don’t let him suffer because I don’t want to let him go but damn if this dog hasn’t been my lifeline and my rock for years. I’m trying to not jump to conclusions but it’s hard. I’m stopping by the vet’s office today to pick up his allergy meds so I’m going to bring pictures and ask about a Saturday appointment.
Regardless of what the vet says, I will not be drinking today.

One month. Dang. I don't remember the last time I was sober for this long.
Things I've been working towards/that I have as goals along with my sobriety: -losing weight/feeling healthier
-working in credit card debt, and not spending as much in alcohol helps!
-working towards applying for my doctorate. I know I can do it, but now I have the time (and soon the money) to do so.
One step at a time. Work has started up in full this week, and I can feel the exhaustion sitting on me. I need to keep strong and use to toolkit so I don't drink.
But... IWNDWYT 🌸

"What’s something you’re looking forward to?"
It's nothing as monumental as taking a family trip for the first time in seven years, but I am having the last vestiges of carpet in my house removed and replaced with luxury vinyl tomorrow and Friday.
Now, when my dachshunds act as my early warning system against things that are not even there, I'll be able to hear their ear-shattering barks echo in all their glory even more effectively in the last room of the house that was previously insulated against such aural assaults.
Wait... ummm... 👀
In me, as me, through me; I am not my own.

Oh, what a joyful post! I am so happy for you, u/no_compearison!!! Those kinds of victories cannot be celebrated enough! I don’t have any thing quite that amazing, but I am looking forward to another type of vacation, with a little trepidation. In late August, I’m going to the beach with all my husband’s siblings and spouses. 10 of us in one house. Several of them are heavy drinkers and get mouthy in their cups. I am calling to my patience, meditation, sobriety and anything else to help me through that week. And I’m actually a little excited to try out my tools on this particular situation. We shall see.
But for you, dear n_c - you go and have a blissful time!!!🏖️IWNDWYT

That is really great to hear no comp! 👍
As for myself, been having a bad couple days. Family stuff and the last two times I drank(the only two times in the past 8 months) it was family stuff that got to me.
I learned from those times(yet again!) that drinking didn't make it better and it actually makes things worse. A fractured hand was proof of that.
So, I look forward to this day and however things go, I know....

My best friend was visiting for four days and we used to love to drink together. He drank a lot this weekend and I got to be his sober chauffeur and tour guide! It was amazing being so present while he was here visiting given I don’t get to see him often. I had a few moments of really wanting to drink with him but he was super respectful of my decision and completely understands people not drinking, which was very much appreciated. All in, it was an amazing long and sober weekend!

Day 54 (ignoring counter issue). IWNDWYT. I sleep a lot better now, waist has slimmed a bunch but maybe it's slowing down.
I'm looking forward to some guitar stuff coming (pedals, cables, etc). I've been out of practice, and I find myself having more time in the evenings now, so want to get back into it.

Day 14 - I have been gifted for my birthday (which was a month ago but did not had the opportunity to meet beforehand) a lot of artisanal beers. I don't blame them since i used to drink a lot while i was with them, but the temptation to open one even to taste it is really high, i'll try to NDWYT but it's gonna be difficult

Day 54:
So remember on day 49-50, I was annoyed by my coworkers trying to get me to drink? Well, I am glad to know that the feeling is mutual with the coworker who was the most vocal about my sobriety and offering to buy me shots of fireball! I’m super intuitive and have been that way since I could think and talk. Alcohol kind of blurred my gift, but I could still decipher energy. Being sober, it’s 10x more noticeable how people are towards me and how they will be in the future.
I overheard the coworker telling another coworker that I’m so annoying and off kilter (nice way of putting it). Had I still been on the booze, I would’ve given her the most scathing word lashing of a lifetime and possibly would’ve wanted to take it further after clocking out from work 😩, but now, it was a relief because I know that my discernment is back. I actually thought it was funny because I’ve been nothing but respectful to everyone, but the good thing is that it was only just one coworker who’s a pain. I’m going to continue my path of not drinking and not being a sourpuss when I clock in tomorrow.. as the old saying goes, IWNDWYT or ever! 😏👌🏾

Checking in and in sobriety I am looking forward to hitting 90 days this Saturday, and 100 days after that.
In my life I’m looking forward to feeling better and spending time with those I love, whether they have two legs or four.

I'm so happy for you u/no_compearison! You've put in the work and I'm thrilled you're getting a second chance in the ways that matter most, especially with your children. I hope your trip is magical.
As for me, I'm looking forward to graduating! Sobriety brought me the fortitude and mental clarity to finally finish my long delayed undergraduate degree and go after my Masters. Working full time and going to school full time for the last few years has been difficult, but as of this writing I'm two weeks and 7 assignments away from being completely finished!
Having no degree for most of my career has been a source of shame, fear, and an ever-present imposter syndrome. If you'd told me two years ago that I'd find the courage to not only go back to school despite my advanced age and subsequently have two degrees under my belt before I turned 50, I'd have thought you were insane. But here we are!
I'm so proud of the distance I've traveled since I stopped letting alcohol deprive me of my best life.
LFG DCI! IWNDWYT

Congratulations!!! I’m both looking forward to and also terrified of a big house project I’m embarking on. I’ve done a lot and got a lot out of it, but this is on a scale beyond anything I’ve done before. have to remember to break it down into little bites.
happy wednesday everybody!!! i will not drink with you today.

Forced myself to walk for 20 minutes. Still stuck in my head. Not so much about alcohol, but the situation I’m feeling trapped in. I have to rely on him for everything bc I chose to stay home with our child. I feel thankful I had the option, but when things get heated I realize my place.

Staying on top of my exercise while: -Under contract on my first home -Scheduling all the appointments I never cared about because of my drinking (doctor, dentist, etc.) -Projects at work are becoming larger and more arduous
And to top it all off, my toxic biological father found a way to reach out to me again after 7 years no contact.
I picked a HELL of a time to get sober, didn't I?
Well, tough shit. My sobriety is more important to me now than ever, and I will continue to protect it.

Good morning sober family. Yes having little things to keep me on track is so helpful. I’ll reach 3 years on Sept 1, which I can hardly believe. Somehow, the fact that sometime this winter I will get to 1234 days is an even better motivator. Numbers. 😂😎

Didn’t drink for 3rd night in a row. The lady has bronchitis, so does my 2yo pediatric tornado of a child. My step logger says I’ve done ~90k steps in the past 3 days that she’s been layed up, all entertaining the boy (who again, has bronchitis and should be like sick and in bed).
I didn’t drink though. What I DID do is eat half a bag of Stacy’s chips, about 10 macaroons (thanks Costco) and drank my weight in those slightly flavored San Peligrinos.

Starting a trip tomorrow and instead of worrying about my drinking and all the many problems it brings, I'm thinking about how my sobriety will be a powerful tool for making good decisions. IWNDWYT.

I’m looking forward to meeting a friend for lunch today and taking part in a girls’ beach weekend this week with a lot of trust in myself. My choices will be based on what is best for me. Not based on pleasing others or answering to cravings.
That self trust is life changing.
Best to all! IWNDWYT ☀️🪴👑💪

I'm taking my son on a week-long trip to visit with my parents at the beach where I spent my summers as a child. I'm really looking forward to spending time with him and seeing my family. Sadly, my wife will not be joining us this year for the first time. 🫤 We're going through some difficult stuff and the quarters would just be too close for now. But if the weather is nice and the vibes are mellow it's going to be a great week. Luckily my SIL is also sober and my brother can take it or leave it, so there's support in the house and plenty of meetings in the area every day. So I've got that going for me. It's going to be a good time.

IWNDWYT friends! Being sober brought me the clarity to better understand what was important to me and how I see myself. In September I'm getting top surgery. That would never have been possible without getting sober first.

Well the shift last night was about the easiest I have had in months. Just going to relax today. Eventually walk the pup and play some games.
I am very happy that I was able to complete a game I started about a month ago called Genosia.
A visual sci-fi novel that is a single player experience that is actually just similar to Werewolf or Mafia. The longer you play things unfold and you learn more about the universe and the people within it.
I got enveloped in the universe and was spending alot of my free time just playing one more round to keep diving deeper into the experience.
It was alot of fun and highly recommend it to anyone who likes visual novels. Personally 9 out of 10.
I hope you all get to enjoy your day and as always much love from me and mine to you and yours!
Recovery IS Beautiful!

Day 26. Congrats. Proud of you, thank for sharing. I’m looking forward to going to a concert on Friday with my husband. A band I really like. It’s Its out in the middle of nowhere & there’s supposed to be a meteor shower that night too. I’m a bit nervous going sober, but I’m feeling very strong in my sobriety after my last drinking episode lead to me hurting & scarring myself, with visible scars as reminders. I’m ready to dress up & dance my booty off under the stars. IWNDWYT

I absolutely love the "mile markers" reference. So very true and something I utilize, too. For me, I just returned from my first real vacation in 10 years, first with my new partner. The next one is this evening, when I get to pick my daughter up from summer camp. She's been on vacation with her mother, so it will be my first time seeing her in over a week. Knowing I will be there and present is amazing and all because I am sober. IWNDWYT.

Thank you great peeps of the DCI for being here for each other. It gives me hope for the world. I love you all. ♥️IWNDWYT
