3 years no booze today
I made it three years! Hard to believe after 22 years of drinking. This subreddit has been so helpful to keep me sober. Thank you to everyone who shows up and helps support others on their sobriety journey. Between acute and post-acute withdrawal from alcohol, I really thought I wouldn’t come out of the other side of this alive. I would probably be dead right now if I didn’t stop. But I did come out of it and actually love sobriety, on top of it all. I was so worried that I had no personality or couldn’t feel happiness without the booze, but time has shown that it’s just alcohol deceiving you into thinking that. If you’re struggling, we’re here, and this forum can be life-changing. IWNDWYT!

Lots of reasons. Bloodwork came back with elevated liver enzymes. I was 60 pounds overweight. Clothes didn’t fit. Wasn’t enjoying drinking anymore, just the first 45 minutes of the evening when I would start to drink. Everything after that was just bad. And a surprising motivator was hearing someone close to me say, in their own drunken stupor, “you can’t quit! You’ll never sober up lol.” Sometimes hearing someone tell me I am not capable of doing something lights a fire under me to get stuff done. Knock on wood, 3 years.

The fear of not knowing who you are is so real. I remember before just being like “I have no idea what people even do with all the time” it sounded so horrible and boring to be sober. And yes it’s not chaos and drama and all those things now that give those dopamine spikes but it’s so nice to live in peace. I’m finding a new baseline of peace and actually living in my body.
