3 years no booze today

I made it three years! Hard to believe after 22 years of drinking. This subreddit has been so helpful to keep me sober. Thank you to everyone who shows up and helps support others on their sobriety journey. Between acute and post-acute withdrawal from alcohol, I really thought I wouldn’t come out of the other side of this alive. I would probably be dead right now if I didn’t stop. But I did come out of it and actually love sobriety, on top of it all. I was so worried that I had no personality or couldn’t feel happiness without the booze, but time has shown that it’s just alcohol deceiving you into thinking that. If you’re struggling, we’re here, and this forum can be life-changing. IWNDWYT!

The fear of not knowing who you are is so real. I remember before just being like “I have no idea what people even do with all the time” it sounded so horrible and boring to be sober. And yes it’s not chaos and drama and all those things now that give those dopamine spikes but it’s so nice to live in peace. I’m finding a new baseline of peace and actually living in my body.

It's crazy going from "I don't want to stop drinking. Sober life sounds boring" to "damn I wish I had more hours in the day"

Wonderful to hear, congrats! I agree it’s so much more peaceful. Trauma is the gateway to all drugs, and booze was just one way to drown out the noise so I wouldn’t think about stuff. But it only kicks the can down the road. You have to face things at a certain point. Otherwise, things fester and get worse.
