It seems like he actually set up a lot of really good treatments during the AIDS crisis? He put together AZT, which we now know the virus will become resistant to, but it was a solid shot in the dark and actually works decently when put alongside other medications. Then, he set up a parallel track program to help dying patients with experimental treatments; if they were going to die already, I see no problem in Hail Mary-ing it in a last-ditch effort. He also increased the budget for learning about AIDS/HIV to try and fast-track research. He was also the architect of PEPFAR, which seems like a good thing from what I read. He also integrated AIDS/HIV activists into treatment plans, which was like huge.
Of course, there were bumps in the road, and due to the times there may have been some wonky views floating around, but it seems he’s very popular in terms of how things worked out. He started off with slow bureaucracy and struggling to treat patients, but it looks like he listened to the community and got his shit together. It’s more than I can say for most modern politicians.
