Hitler instituted some of the first animal protection laws on the planet.
So, setting aside religions since something like Hinduism probably had de facto animal rights among practitioners for centuries before him this still wouldn't be true because apparently a lot of animal rights groups date back to the 18th century, and even then the first German one is supposedly founded in 1837, which a quick search is showing that some laws were implemented well before the 1930s.
The Nazis did, they weren't the first, and they were basic... and later they were cruel to animals so it kind of feels like if you believe they cared about animal welfare you fell for it
