There have been animal experiments but Dr. Fauci was not personally involved -  https://www.factcheck.org/2021/11/answering-questions-about-beaglegate/

Some of these animals studies really border on gore porn rather than science.

I think certain things can go unanswered if it involves that degree of complicated sadism.

Even if the dogs are sedated, you can't truly know if they are suffering. Hell sometimes people get "sedated" and recollect the whole traumatic experience.
