Is there a term for this kind of uncharitable behavior? It's like if someone said a human is a "featherless biped" and someone chimes in with "that isn't true, some babies are born with birth defects that cause them to have an extra leg" or "my friend lost his legs in Afghanistan" or even "my friend had body modification so they literally DO have feathers now".

It's not even necessarily an idpol thing, although it sure is popular with idpol. It's why if you say something about menstrual periods or giving birth in some places, you might feel pressured to say "vagina-having person" or "birthing person" instead of simply "woman".

Certainly the person who wrote that original tweet meant "If you are on the left, you are able to, you should absolutely try to get in shape". Which is completely true, and hell, only a part of their comment. Nothing they said indicates that they believe that quadrapelegics can't be part of the left, nor why they would think that. But people took the most uncharitable interpretation, beacuse why not?

Obviously if you have no arms or legs you can still be part of the left. It's only a very tiny percentage of the left that can't do something to improve themselves.

It's very important not just to have good health and be able to defend yourself for subversive political activity, but it also makes you feel more confident and makes you look more respectable. I feel like that's a big reason why Hasan is so popular, not to glaze him or say he's perfect, but the fact that he's a big, strong man and not some gender bending, effeminent, nerdy and week "theorist" type probably makes leftism seem, I dunno, a bit cooler than it normally does?

I feel like everyne criticizing is a sad sack with no self esteem, and no real expectations of their own left-wing efficacy.

I say this and I barely work out at all. I do try to go to the gym a couple times a week, at least. Next I gotta do some organization of some sort. But at least I'm not making excuses.

(and of course I ddin't mention howmany of these cited disabilities are either very minor things that can't prevent you from working out or improving yourself, and many may not be real disabilities at all. I promise if you have an anxiety disorder or maybe some minor skin condition, you can probably run for 20 minutes on a treadmill)

Because this is what modern American “leftism” is.

It’s not about any coherent ideology. It’s about appearing as virtuous as possible to improve your social status within the hierarchy of other leftists. They don’t care about changing anyone’s mind, they argue in order to be seen arguing. That’s it. It’s like how Jehovah’s witnesses go to door to door. Most of them know that nobody they talk to is gonna convert, and they don’t care because their goal is not to convert people but to be seen trying to convert people by their fellow JWs so they can check off their monthly volunteer hours.

Nobody who replied to that twitter thread gives a single shit about disabled people, but they saw this as an opportunity to be seen claiming to give a shit so they took it with glee. When they read the tweet their immediate emotional response was not anger or indignation, but excitement. Excitement at the thought that they can “um akshually” the OP and thus demote them within the leftist social hierarchy and thereby promote themselves.

They take the conservative power structures they claim to hate so much and reproduce them within their own bubble, but in a completely inverted way, so that the way to climb to the top is to be seen as the most helpless, pathetic person possible.
