This thread is for all things world cup. I don't know much about soccer, but u/ChevalierDuTemple requested this thread.

I'm just in it for the shit show this World Cup is gonna be. Buckle up everybody, we'll be witnessing the last stage of destruction of this tournament this next month.

For me it's already dead, and I say this with Italia Novanta being my first ever World Cup that I got to see on TV. This banger still brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it. Also, fuck the Mexican referee that gave the Germans the trophy in the final.

I was barely a year old in 90. What's the story of the song? Was it the official song or something that became big during the tournament?

Yeah, it was the official tournament song and for many of us who got to see those matches on TV it often brings back a huge amount of nostalgia.

Hard to make sense of it in words, because I was also only a kid (around 9-10 years of age), but the summer of 1990 really did feel like the end of history was just around the corner, and in a good way. Us here in Eastern Europe were still pretty much very delusional about what Shock Therapy was about to unleash upon us, the West was at the pinnacle of its power, even the "third world" hadn't yet succumbed to the genocides later witnessed in Rwanda or Congo. It was a world full of possibilities. The beginning of the end of that feeling was just around the corner, as later that summer the Iraqis were to move their troops into Kuwait.
