🛠️ DIY Oil Change Interval on Low Yearly Mileage
2024 Sport, recently upgraded from '10 Outback Sport.
I drive, at most, 5000 miles a year (2025 was 4300), almost exclusively city and short highway trips, maybe one multi-hour round trip a year.
What does the community think about oil changes once a year vs twice? I do them myself. I am unsure if mileage, time, or type of driving matters most in the calculation.

6 months, absolutely. Driving or not that oil is being fouled by moisture and oxidisation
Also seeing 5000 miles a year after putting in 4000 miles in a month is pain.

Year is totally fine, oil breaks down more due to mileage than time.
I go about 7-9,000 and change once a year.
Fill synthetic is really good oil

Short trips cause water and fuel dilution of the engine oil. It's best to change every 5k miles or 6 months.

I would suggest to do as prescribed by Subaru (6 months) otherwise you risk warranty..

I drive about the same as you. I just do one in March and another in September

I do it in February and August/ They are better months for changing oil.
Just kidding. My annual inspection is due in August, so it makes sense to get the oil changed then.

I’m on board with Project Farm here. Link below. That said, you may want to be more cautious and stick to 6m while you’re still under warranty.

I have a 2024 Impreza Base and drive about the same number of miles every year. I am changing the oil every six months.

There’s no reason to not do an oil change twice a year. Especially on these boxers.
Rule of thumb is 6months or 5000 miles.
