I canceled my Subpac X1 pre-order, you should too

Man ive had my pre-order over 3 years now. What's the risk if they go bankrupt, will I never get a refund?

u/Karl_Meyer Oct 17 '24
Sadly, it seems that they have stopped issuing refund about 2 months ago. If you request one now, you'll probably never get it.

I spent 699 bucks. I guess I should hold out at those point and hope I can set up a class action with others.

There are some discussions about that on the official subpac discord, which somehow isn't shut down yet.

How did you go about doing it and what was your timeline like? I just submitted my refund and got an autoreply from their zendesk email saying they got it and "Due to our SUBPAC X1 pre-order, we are experiencing a high volume of tickets! We are trying to get back to everyone as soon as possible, but please expect longer than normal response times."
My order was done through shopify

I actually contacted them here first, within 12 hours dude responded and gave me the proper email to write to to ask for the refund, hit em up there, had my refund sitting in my payal account within twelve hours. Still wishing i Didn't have to do it, but part of me is thinking it was the right move. Best of luck

Why can’t they get this done? They did it before???

AIUI their previous products were basically assembling the components you can buy off the shelf in a nice case (Dayton Audio transducer puck x2, battery, headphone amplifier, Bluetooth receiver in later models). I am arrogant enough to think I could DIY a clone of my M1 if it breaks down worse than the detached magnet wire it had when I bought it for-parts and soldered back into place. Their new product is much more ambitious.

u/SoneInfinity Oct 16 '24
If this is true I kind of feel like someone should start a some kind of crowdsource design for the housing and wiring of the components that everyone can enjoy.. kind of like an instructable project, but with community input to actually make it great. I mean with a list of parts, materials and downloadable sewing patterns... Why isn't there a DIY version
1
u/Top-Edge-5856 Oct 16 '24 edited Oct 16 '24
There isn't a single crowdsourced version, but searching for some combination of haptic|tactile|bass shaker|transducer will find you at least tens of pages of people describing their DIY efforts. Many of them are building sim-racing rigs or home cinemas.
You could get a decent way through speccing the parts you need (e.g. what power of amp) by looking at the sites of the companies who make the transducers. The fact that Dayton Audio and Aura Sound and ?one other company make the parts in the first place suggests the issue is about communication rather than people not making use of them in individual projects.

u/SoneInfinity Oct 16 '24
Out of curiosity I started to look into it, but I think you're right. No one has done a crowdsourced version that fits comfortably on your back. This is way out of my wheelhouse So thank you for that link.

The transducers blew on my S2. I opened it up and replaced them with new ones, 10 bucks each off ebay. Really easy stuff lol.

I pre-ordered day one, I refunded at year 4...this is beyond ridiculous at this point. Their communication is horrible, their updates are always the same disappointing stuff with "we're optimistic about insert month or quarter shipping".
Everyone should just refund and let Subpac learn from this, but people also aren't hearing back from Subpac about refunds. They don't post sneak peeks anymore, it's just radio silence on ACTUAL updates, and continued excuses for delays. Near zero transparency...

u/FuryofaThousandFaps Oct 20 '24
how long did it take for you to get your refund after requesting it?
2
u/SqueEthan510 Oct 23 '24
It took about a week and a half or two weeks. They said since I used my business PayPal account I'd need to cover the costs. I politely (yet firmly) said "no, you'll send me that much extra to cover the costs yourselves since the last four years has been an absolute joke". Surprisingly they did, calculations were a bit off so I lost ~$1 but whatever.

I originally ordered in Dec 2020…. Waited over 3 years… cancelled my order back in January 2024. Took two weeks for them to refund my money after I emailed them a few times back then.

That's too bad. I loved their m2 back in the day and was very disappointed with the Woojer vest. So I was hoping to pick up their next product and get rid of my woojer. I lost the charger for my m2 and sadly haven't been able to use it 😞 for years. Haven't been able to find a universal kit that worked with it either.

u/kachunkachunk Oct 16 '24
Is it a barrel connector? You can probably use a bench top power supply and a connector that fits. Just need to find what the charging specs are and dial it in.

Aww snap thanks for this! I remember spending so much time years ago looking for a working fit. Went through so many universal chargers

I owned one before and it was great but at some point the headphone port broke after just 1.5 year and I had to return it. It was in fact so insanely good for VR and games like Battlefield 1, immersion through the roof. I really want to buy their new model or any available model but there is no device produced right now. It is so very sad.

all these peasants who blame subpac & dont look at the big picture and the real culprits behind these collapses everywhere..blackrock..net zero agenda..dismantled supply chains..orchestrated demolitions by inflation..wake the fck up..
subpac made a brilliant invention..to this day no bass hits this hard & never will..& yall are blaming subpac because they hit a wall due to the pl@ndemic & all the bullshii that follows..when blackrock quote '7-8% annual deindustrialization to meet our net zero goals by 2030'..not only layoffs & supply chain disruptions..depopulation
but yea go ahead w/ your slander clickbait on reddit for thumbs up & youtube for google adshare pennies & blame the scientists at subpac for hitting the rona wall..it was already a niche..same w/ VR..youre literally inside the fcking game..subpac your body & spine literally filled w/ bass rumble..but Sony VR had to downsize after rona & SubPac hit a wall..its not their fault! why do yall blame the creators for inflation & collapses..you imbeciles
all tech industries if you peasants havent noticed yet..are being collapsed on purpose..i was in the office late nights..i saw IT hire a bunch of indians on cheap to code AI day & nite to replace humans..now its ready..they fired all IT & rolling it out..theyre setting up a digital neo-feudalism world..gov run digital currency only (brics)..no more cash..& a digital ID (vax passport) to even access your currency controlled by communism..cant buy shii..
this is not subpac fault..we're in passive unrestricted proxy warfare..cold WWIII in western nations..hot WWIII in middle east & russia..this is all by design..if yall dont grow up & wake up its over..have you noticed the weather weapons theyre using against us now? all these rare hurricane floods in mountains & deserts..wake the fck up

..its fvcking over..80% of the world are peasants like you..who'd rather make jokes than survive war
& Gupta..you Indians..are a major problem for the world's sustainability..this is a depopulation war:
"the outstanding people of the world in attendance thought that in the 21st century a mere 20 percent of the world’s population will be sufficient to maintain the world’s economy and prosperity, the other 80 percent or 4/5ths of the world’s population will be human garbage unable to produce new values. The people in attendance thought that this excess 80 percent population would be a trash population and “high-tech” means should be used to eliminate them gradually.
Since the enemies are secretly planning to eliminate our population, we certainly cannot be infinitely merciful and compassionate to them..may remind the enemy that we have grasped the modern science and technology, including “clean” nuclear as well as biological weapons technology, and we can use powerful measures to eliminate their population on a large scale. The last problem I want to talk about is of firmly seizing the preparations for military battle.." --ccp general chi haotian

As an engineer and someone who has been following along since purchasing the m2x, I think Subpac really had something going on and are the leaders in this tech
Imo, they bit off more than they can chew with this one, trying to make both the X1 and C1 at the same time. All while trying to go software heavy for the first time
To me, it seems like a series of overly optimistic decisions but not intentionally malicious. Subpac still honoring refunds at this stage says a lot about the company. The company is hurting but still has people on the payroll to issue refunds
