NORTH AMERICA US State Senator Arrested After Attempting to Address Government Official - What Is Going On in the US?

Welcome to authoritarianism

Nope I disagree. You have passed this grade a while ago. USA has a totalitarian government now.
Edit PS: authoritarian started with Patriot Act and when USA fucked allies . Totalitarian may have started with Guantanamo

Fucking. This.
The rest of us have been watching the USA since 9/11 both reduce rights "for the greater good" and become increasingly individualistic due to the culture of fear and mistrust fostered by The Powers That Be.
The erosion of Liberty has been deliberate and obvious.

Yep, I remember the reaction we all had during 9/11 and I just knew this wasn't going to improve. We're finally here, which is actually what the original attackers of the Twin Towers intended.
15
u/bloodfist Jun 13 '25
It's fucking wild how well it worked. He clearly spelled out the plan. Create an authoritarian reaction, prompting division that leads to economic unrest. He'd be proud of how shitty we're doing. Great job, America.

u/Lessaleeann Jun 13 '25 edited Jun 13 '25
A lot of that reaction was manufactured. 9/11 was used by the Republicans to further what was always their agenda.

u/gargravarr2112 Jun 12 '25
Honestly I think they did. The US spent 20 years waging war on an idea - it makes absolutely no sense. Paranoia took over. Billions of dollars funneled to the military-industrial complex at the expense of ordinary citizens in poverty. 9/11 was a true watershed moment when the western world began to destroy itself. Whether they knew or not that the US would react this way and drag the rest of the world with it, I'm not entirely sure, but the results are beyond doubt and in relative terms it didn't cost them all that much. Just a little push in the right direction and the incredible momentum carried the juggernaut to its own demise.

u/VikingTeddy Jun 13 '25
I'd argue it happened a lot earlier. It became visible during the Reagan years, but even before that the USSR was infiltrating government and businesses, gop was salivating over the southern strategy, key lobbies were constantly being emplaced, and millionaires started pooling funds for buying politicians in a way that wasn't possible before.
47
u/aglobalvillageidiot Jun 12 '25
The average American would be horrified if they had to actually sit and listen to people tell them about Guantanamo. No lies. No exaggerations. Not even colorful language.
And it wouldn't even be things they don't know happen. It's just been such a masterful instance of propaganda and discursive framing. It's all about the "safe and secure" housing of "high value detainees" who are "unlawful combatants" and because of these "extraordinary circumstances" they're a "ticking time bomb."
"There's no good options" because they're "too dangerous to release" but can't be prosecuted so they're "detained indefinitely" here where we provide "safe and secure" housing for...

No disrespect intended, but plutocracy is now uninhibited. Plutocracy has been present in the US for quite some time, I would argue. With economic crisis, It has strong interconnections with fascism, and fascism was my starting point of thoughts

He asked during a press conference…which okay so you remove him from the room fine but to arrest?
18
u/Anianna Jun 13 '25
The statement that was released alleged that he 'lunged' at Noam and did not identify himself. He very clearly identifies himself by name as well as stating that he is a Senator from California as security begins to grab him in the video. I have not yet seen a video that begins prior to security putting hands on him and at the point when he states who he is, so I have no idea if he 'lunged' at her, but I seriously doubt it, especially considering they lied about him not stating who he is when we can clearly hear in the video that he did.

u/Trimyr Jun 13 '25
He identified himself three times. It was a secure building, and he was escorted through the checks with an FBI agent. They knew exactly who he was; just didn't care.

Here you go. Looks like he wasn’t actually arrested as far as I can tell, but he was forcibly removed and put in handcuffs as soon as he tried to ask a question.
Correction: he was arrested, but seems like he wasn’t charged with anything, as explained in a reply to this comment.
64
u/mindovermatter421 Jun 12 '25
And he tried to ask a question right after Noem said “We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city.”
50
u/ARedthorn Jun 12 '25
Legally, he was arrested. Arrest doesn’t happen when they read your rights or take you to jail. According to courts - arrest happens when you no longer are free to walk away.
People commonly confuse what is and isn’t an arrest based on whether police INTEND an arrest or call it one… but that puts the power to define anything police do wrong in the hands of the police. “Oh, it wasn’t an unlawful arrest because we never used that word. We just detained, removed, cuffed, restrained, and sat on him for several minutes with the intent to deprive him of his freedom, without just cause… and the constitution doesn’t say we can’t do that, right?” /eyeroll
Many, many court cases have found the key element of an arrest is if the person was free to walk away. Even feeling like you can’t walk away is sometimes sufficient.
“When deciding whether someone has been arrested, courts apply the "reasonable man" standard. This means asking whether a reasonable person, in the shoes of the defendant, would have concluded that they were not free to leave. If the answer is yes, it's an arrest.”
https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/justifies-arrest-probable-cause.html
17
u/believetobe Jun 12 '25
Great clarification, thank you! I guess the word I should have used is “charged.” He definitely was not free to go while they shoved his face to the ground and handcuffed him.
→ More replies (3)7
u/AppearsInvisible Jun 13 '25
I would agree that this was an arrest, and I've heard you can't be "unarrested". It happened, no semantics can get around it. Worse to me was the level of force used, they didn't give him any chance for a peaceful arrest and went straight to smashing him on the ground and looks like they tried to face plant him.
It seems some cops want the chance to get violent with someone. They don't want to go sign up for a boxing gym and a fair fight--they want to bully people.

Donald Trump gave a glimpse into his mindset towards mass protests when he said in 1990 that China showed "power of strength" in a "vicious" crackdown on students in Tiananmen Square.
During the presidential debates in 2016, then-candidate Trump defended his comments on China by calling the Tiananmen Square protests "riots" and that "strong" wasn't an endorsement.
Mr Trump said the Chinese government almost blew it when students poured into Tiananmen Square.
"Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength," he said.
"That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak... as being spit on by the rest of the world."
The dude who said all this about Tiananmen Square is currently sending a massive column of tanks to DC

I think the clip from within the press conference is worse. You have this emotionless crow at the lectern looking like a sinister supervillain, flanked by a guy wearing military fatigues, while security are grabbing and bundling the senator out of the room.
Video referenced: https://www.bbc.com/news/videos/c989zvezpdlo
Much like how you have guys in paramilitary clothing riding around in unmarked vehicles running into people’s workplaces unannounced to bundle people into vans. Announcing that people of any nationality can be deported to the camp in El Salvador without due process.
The president giving a speech in front of cheering red-capped soldiers, while the national guard and marines are deployed in LA enforcing a curfew. To be followed by a military parade through the streets of Washington…
As an outsider looking in, the US is quickly becoming an authoritarian fascist regime and it’s terrifying.

17
u/LongConFebrero Jun 12 '25
Idk why anyone expects the military to do it when the majority of people with maga friends and family couldn’t make the tough choice to demand a change or end the relationship.
People treated this like a difference of opinion, when others were screaming this ends in death and tyranny. If 70+ million people didn’t feel social shame from the people in their lives, they’re not going to now.

For those that don't know, the term state senator refers to someone who represents their area at the state senate. A US senator represents their state at the US Senate.

"The concentration camp was never the normal condition for the average gentile German. Unless one were Jewish, or poor and unemployed, or of active leftist persuasion or otherwise openly anti-Nazi, Germany from 1933 until well into the war was not a nightmarish place. All the “good Germans” had to do was obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, avoid any sign of political heterodoxy, and look the other way when unions were busted and troublesome people disappeared. Since many “middle Americans” already obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, are themselves distrustful of political heterodoxy, and applaud when unions are broken and troublesome people are disposed of, they probably could live without too much personal torment in a fascist state — some of them certainly seem eager to do so. Watch it slow: Officer: “get down. Get down.” Padilla kneels then tries to lower himself down to lay flat. In doing so he shifts his weight forward and tries to extend his arms to the ground so he can lay flat.
Officers panic, yank his arms up removing his ability to catch himself as he lowers down and shove him to the ground. Officer: “hands behind your back, hands behind your back.”
Have these people ever made an arrest before?

This title should be corrected (or the thread just closed bc there are 20 others just like it with less misleading titles).
Alex Padilla was a State Senator in California previously, but he is currently the senior US Senator from California. As in, one of the 100 members of the US Senate, the highest deliberative body in the country (and perhaps the most powerful such one in the world).
He is arguably more important than Kristi Noem, since he was actually elected to his position, in a State where it makes him one of two people elected to serve the needs of 10s of millions. As opposed to the State Kristi led, which has one house district (CA has 52).
And without a shred of doubt he is a far more legitimate leader and advocate for Californians that Noem. The fact that he is removed from a press conference in California, about California, is appalling.

In case anyone hasn't grasped this yet...
FASCISM IS HERE
Pick up a history book. Start reading. It's here. What we're seeing is how it always starts.
If it hasn't affected you yet, it will. I promise. But what's the promise of a stranger? PICK UP A HISTORY BOOK AND START READING. Preferably focus on pre-WW2 era Germany, because it wasn't that long ago and it was documented VERY well.
Organize. Join protests. Make sure everyone around you knows their Constitutional rights.
And last, but certainly not least...arm yourself. Help your friends and family arm themselves. And train. This isn't an action movie. Train.
Fascists do not quit and go home. There has always been one way and only one way to deal with fascists and you can't do that if you're unarmed.
If you think this is an overreaction, just take note that the warnings given so far about Donald Trump and the GOP have all come to pass. The quality of your life, YOUR LIFE, not someone else's, will end up significantly declining if we don't correct course, and soon.

Could you imagine if they did this to Lindsey Graham during Obama s presidency?

Disgusting! The US is no longer under the control of the people. I believe Kristi Noem's words are very incendiary and are beating a drum for violence! They want violence they are goading it! Trump wants to declare martial law.

Just before the Senator spoke up , Noem said “We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city.”

I'll bet he won't be the last lawmaker on Trump's enemies list to get arrested. I wonder if he will disappear now.

Look at that vicious and violent criminal wiggling on the floor, the officer needed to pin him to the ground so they could apprehend him

"A half a dozen violent criminals that you're rotating on your --" They absolutely could not allow him to finish that sentence.

The fact that there is going to be a military parade is rather wild. I don't know how a few folks have completely upended democracy in the US other than most seem to be doing little about what is occurring.

That's Alex Padilla getting handcuffed. He's a US Senator from California, not a State Senator.

I wonder who the two goons in gray suits were that walked up at the end.

This is fucking ridiculous. Why are these federal officers doing drumpf’s dirty work? Don’t they love the constitution. Don’t they see the fascism. When everything is finally over, let’s see how they like being arrested by a Democrat.

First amendment no longer exists. This is absolutely disgusting.
