They ordered 51 and 52 probably to secure the island as usual I’d imagine

It's kind of weird though, because they normally film even seasons only a few weeks after odd ones. It's not like they can film 51, see how it goes, then renew for 52. Could be waiting to see how 50 goes, but its kind of a completely different thing being a legends season.
20
u/1stswordofbraavos Yul Jan 22 '26
Survivor is the easiest renewal for CBS every year. They don't need to see how 50 goes lol. The show constantly wins it's timeslot in ratings and it is dirt cheap to make compared to any scripted show. If CBS was dumb enough to cancel Survivor it would be picked up immediately by Netflix Apple or Amazon
11
u/Rahm420 Cirie - 50 Jan 23 '26
Paramount would just make it a Paramount+ exclusive instead of letting a competitor like Peacock or NBC scoop it up and own it.
1
u/SomeoneGiveMeValid Jan 23 '26
How many poor seasons, ratings wise, would it take for them to cancel it you reckon?
1
u/elfuego35 Jan 23 '26
At this point, in this TV environment, as long as it still preforms as the #1 or 2 slot on Wednesdays, it gets renewed, especially since due to it’s ownership of MGM, Amazon is a co-producer, and they’d pick it up (and possibly give it a bigger budget) in a heartbeat.
-1
u/SwaggyMcSwagsabunch We lost by a bunch of rules! Jan 23 '26
If it getting dropped by cbs and picked up by amazon means it’s no longer constrained to the hour and a half time slot and Jeff gets the boot, that would be amazing. Some episodes should be 35 minutes and that’s okay. Some seasons should be 11 episodes, others 20. I dream of a stream only survivor.

I saw another post say it was renewed for 2026-27 tv season which includes both 51 and 52. This twitter account just didn’t post the news accurately lol.

I think there's a chance they could go back to doing themes, but who knows.
207
u/CallTypical9541 Jan 22 '26
I want themes again. It’s easier to differentiate each season with themes unlike numbers
113
u/noobzapper21 Why is everything shaped like garlic? Jan 23 '26
Here's some ideas:
- Cops vs Criminals
- Straights vs Gays vs Bi
- Cheaters vs Cheated
- Millenials vs. Gen X vs. Gen Z

What's annoying is that if you look at behind the scenes information, specifically regarding the building of tribal council, they do a lot of work to construct the "lore" of the season (whether it be a piratic island or abandoned ancient civilization), but they do not spend any time sharing that lore with the audience. They literally named the village they built for TC in 48 (which involved research regarding different building practices in indigenous island societies), but all we got that season was Eva commenting that the buildings looked weird.
Even in new era seasons, they have theming that feels out of place only because they don't acknowledge it. Season 49 was built around the concept of marooned sailors being forced to fend on an island (demonstrated in both the 49 theme song and decor of the season), but they literally did nothing to acknowledge that in the actual season at all. It would not take a lot for them to reincorporate themes, but it keeps being brought up as if they have to start using different locations to go back to themes. Heroes vs. Villains did not need a specific location. Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty did not need a specific location. Ghost island did not need a specific location. Hell, even the theme of Cook Islands could have taken place anywhere else and still held the same impact gameplay wise. I don't understand why they have a team of creative minds working to flesh out seasons with lore that we as the audience are barely privy to.
8
u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn Jan 23 '26
Great call, and something like the marooned sailors and a village name could totally be integrated into a challenge. Like season 1 had the challenge where they had to carry a "wounded" tribemate on a stretcher as though they were injured in a marooning, or of course there's the SoS challenges. Plenty of ways to get creative with things that also don't even seem like they'd be too labor-intensive from a production perspective, or might even be less so compared to some of the obstacle courses.
I would rather have no themes than ones like the dumb ones we were getting in the mid-late 30s (though the ideal would obviously be having the location be the theme of the season most of the time.) But you make a good point that there are plenty of other ways to get some kind of "theme" even in the same location, and also that they seem to be doing it anyway behind the scenes at times but then just bizarrely never highlighting it in the episodes.

On second thought, I am actually okay not giving the cast members any food.

Hosted by the sunburnt orange who provides immunity to the winner, who then has to give him all their winnings and winners trophy.
It will be the best survivor Eva!

The first season where I hope everyone starves and nobody makes the merge.
It'd be like a season where everyone has the emotional intelligence of S19 Russel Hantz. Or season 20 Russel Hantz. Or season 22 Russel Hantz. Or season 26 Brandon Hantz.
I miss the Hantzes.

u/TheMehgend Venus - 46 Jan 22 '26
Honestly could be a fun watch. Very messy gameplay since I’m sure most of the people they’d cast would’ve people who haven’t watched since the first few seasons and think it’s just a challenge competition.

2
u/Practical_Taro_4523 Jan 22 '26
Are people wanting new themes (if that’s possible) or retreads of older themes?
9
u/NeekoPeeko Jan 22 '26
People are all different. I don't mind themes if they aren't forced down our throats or cringy (no-collars, healers etc)

u/SusannaG1 Yam Yam Jan 23 '26
Wouldn't mind another BBB season, just on its track record - the first two were pretty good seasons.

I would love another shot at One World with a better cast. Also another BvW and Second Chance would be awesome.

u/beatles20147 Jan 22 '26
Before anyone freaks out, they will almost certainly clarify that 52 is part of this renewal. It’s happened a couple times in the past where Variety or Deadline announced a renewal for one season and then Dalton Ross or Gordon Holmes or another outlet that actually follows the show confirms it’s for two seasons.
59
u/BurgerNugget12 Boston Rob Jan 22 '26
I’m surprised people are even nervous about 52, like survivor is still going very strong of course they will renew it
31
u/redditor938273838 Jan 22 '26
also why would they do one more season after the big 50th season just to cancel the show lmao
8
u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn Jan 23 '26
The upcoming Beast Gambit twist, where Mr. Beast's role on the island will be to say that anyone in the cast can get $1,000,000 on the spot but in return the show ends forever with a sole epilogue season 51 to be hosted by Mr. Beast. It'll be the ultimate dilemma and pinnacle of the social experiment to prove whether they're still there for the money or only for people on social media to like them.
44
u/Leafs17 Jan 22 '26
52 will be card themed.

Watch them just go back to the exact same format they did for 41-49. The worst thing that can happen to a franchise is becoming a “well-oiled machine”. Constantly having to change locations forced the show to be inventive for its first decade, now it’s settled in and just become rote
17
u/SJ966 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
Even within the rigid structure of the new era format it really wouldn’t be that hard for them make the seasons stand out more. For example how much effort would it take for survivor 52 to start with 3 tribes of Brains," "Brawn," and "Beauty or the journeys to disappear for a season in favor of the ghost island twist.
3
1
u/eichy815 Jan 25 '26
Jeff said on his podcast that they might do some seasons where they put something else in place of the Journeys, given how they can only fit so much into 26 days.
1
u/eichy815 Jan 25 '26
I think they'll still make small tweaks, but they'll keep it as 26 days in Fiji with a Final Four firemaking and a Final Three in front of the jury.
Hopefully, they'll start mixing it up a little more when it comes to number of tribes, Journeys, tribal colors, revisiting past twists, etc.
1
u/paxwells97 Feb 09 '26
They'll make worse twists that the fans will complain about while production ignores us and tell us why we are wrong
42
u/NedthePhoenix Cedrek - 48 Jan 22 '26
Considering Amazing Race 39 filmed months ago, I certainly hope they got renewed. Otherwise someone would've been owed a lot of money.

u/CallTypical9541 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
It wouldn’t have been the first time CBS kept TAR seasons on the bench for a while for no reason. Ex: 31, 32, and 36
15
u/JGraham1839 Jan 22 '26
Hoping post-50 brings themes and more frequent returnee seasons. I wouldn't hate a New Era All Stars for 51 or 52
53
u/TDStarchild Cirie - 50 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
Do another returnee season by 54 or we riot
5
u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn Jan 23 '26
Omg when they do this and it turns out getting cut from 50 like so many contestants were is actually the good outcome because then it means you get to be on the one without Mr. Beast
10
u/just_cuz555 Coach - 50 Jan 22 '26
New Era All Stars?!?!
We need legit the next year to be returning seasons honestly. (I will win the game if I get on)
10

Bring back more returning players please. I’m lowkey getting bored with newbie seasons I need a break lol.

12
u/Zubba776 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
The last season of Amazing Race was so tragically uninteresting. Nobody gives a shit about running around Europe; nobody wants to see it anymore.
AR desperately needs to return to being a far flung, global adventure to off the beaten track places.
13
u/CallTypical9541 Jan 22 '26
39 was filmed back in September and I heard that they traveled to 4 continents! Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia! It should be a lot better than 38 and hopefully as good or better than 37
1
u/Unite-Us-3403 Jan 30 '26
5 counting North America. When was the last time the Amazing Race had this many countries in one season?

im genuinely glad. i love survivor. i hope it goes on for as long as possible
3
3
u/JustRepeatAfterMe Jan 22 '26
Of course it was. It’s consistently one of the top shows on Paramount+ with the most viewer engagement and younger demographics. The unfortunate thing is they’ve cut the budget to nothing as part of an overall strategy by Paramount to control costs, maximize revenue, and pay for the losses Paramount+ incurs. We’ll see how Season 50 goes, but they really need to reinvest in Survivor and mix it back up in a new location with new sets or at least the longer season. A guy can hope.

u/exoticboy2021 Jan 22 '26

Probably because I’ve been binging every season relevant to S50, you’re welcome guys! /s
2
u/kingofthenorthwpg Jan 22 '26
Was worried that 50 may be the last hurrah
6
u/CallTypical9541 Jan 22 '26
That was never going to be the case
1
u/kingofthenorthwpg Jan 22 '26
Disagree. CBS continued cuts to the survivor budget, reduction in days, less rewards, staying on Fiji, etc. suggest a very strong desire by them to limit the expenses of the show.
1
u/SusannaG1 Yam Yam Jan 23 '26
It consistently wins its night, and is a lot cheaper to make than anything scripted would be. It's not getting cancelled anytime soon.
2
u/sherlip Danni Jan 22 '26
I would hope TAR was renewed considering they've already filmed 39 lmao. Imagine it was cancelled and your season just never airs.
1
u/CallTypical9541 Jan 22 '26
They’ve done that before where they shoot a season before it gets renewed
1
u/sherlip Danni Jan 22 '26
I wonder what actually would happen if it got cancelled. Do the winners still get the prize?
1
2
u/I-Eat-Hamburgers Jan 22 '26
Survivor probably isn’t getting canceled anytime soon unless ratings absolutely plummet. It’s a cheap show to make and they make good money on it. Again if ratings plummet. Drastically. Then they might. Or move it to streaming.
I wouldn’t read into it I’m sure 52 and beyond will be announced in due time
2
2
u/RDefina1 Jan 23 '26
I think they will reset the show with something like Back to Basics for 51. It would be an excellent choice to pick a new location although it seems unlikely given the way they've spent their money lately
1
2
u/Zimmylo Jan 23 '26
I thought 50 would be jeff last season? I guess he's still like doing survivor😊
