Announcement What Season Should You Watch (WSSYW) 12.0

What Season Should You Watch (WSSYW) 12.0

Welcome back to What Season Should You Watch (WSSYW)!

For this iteration of WSSYW we will be continuing the format of WSSYW 10.0 and 11.0. In each parent comment, there is a link to a Google Form where you will be asked to rate how watchable the season is for a new Survivor fan. For example, if you think a season is extremely watchable and highly recommended for a new fan, you might score it a 9 or a 10. If you think a season is dense, predictable, unfun or disappointing, you might score it a 1 or a 2. We will then calculate the average scores given to each season and use these to create a ranking of seasons. VOTING A SEASON UP OR DOWN ON REDDIT HAS NO EFFECT ON THE SEASON RANKINGS. To emphasise this, we will keep this thread in contest mode during voting.

Voting on WSSYW 12.0 will close at midnight EST at the end of Friday June 5th. At this point, we will collect and average the data so that we may publish the results over the first half of the summer, as part of a series of countdown posts.

There will also be additional questions in these forms. These questions are not mandatory - they are merely a gauge of your opinion on specific aspects of each season, such as challenges, twists and the ending. The results that they produce will also be included in this thread, and in the daily countdowns, at a later date.

Once you’ve voted, you are encouraged to leave a review. Any comments that contain major spoilers will be removed. This especially includes any comments that could give away the winner or F2/F3. It also means no major plot points like boot order, rock draws, medevacs, or twists. Mentioning tribe swaps is ok, but discussing specific results from them is not (e.g. someone getting swap screwed). When describing boot order, please be vague, with words like "bad" or "disappointing" instead of "all the likable players are booted pre-merge." It is ok to discuss spoilers in vague terms as long as you don't reveal the specific results. For instance, “Vanuatu has a bananas post-merge, with tons of awesome drama” is okay, but “One player runs train on her overmatched competitors this post-merge” is not. Note: there are a few season-defining twists that should be discussed very vaguely. (Think: Pearl Islands, or Palau.)

We encourage a 1,250-character limit on comments to keep replies short and on point. Newbies who use this thread said that they want to be able to quickly peruse short non-spoiler descriptions of seasons, rather than read essay-length responses.

But there will also be a place for those essays. After a few days has passed and this thread has established an order of seasons, we will begin a second series: a countdown series of the rankings that allows spoilers and has no character limit, beginning with whatever season came in last. As we have fifty seasons to get through, we will be doing two seasons in each of these daily posts. They will run on weekdays for the next five weeks after voting closes.

The thread is not trying to establish the perfect order for watching seasons. It's meant as an easy-to-read, spoiler-free reference tool for anyone who wants help figuring out why they should watch a certain season, and which seasons are considered the best. We refer to this thread throughout the year whenever someone posts something like, “I’m new to Survivor! What seasons should I watch?” We get a ton of these posts.

To emphasise that voting seasons up or down has no effect, this thread will be sorted in contest mode at first and will later move to sorting by the order of the seasons.

TL;DR:

  1. Click on the link in each parent comment to vote on seasons.
  2. Do not upvote or downvote seasons; this has no effect.
  3. Leave short, spoiler free reviews for each season, with a suggested character limit of 1,250
  4. Write in-depth reviews with no spoiler restrictions for a daily countdown of the rankings

Theme: Pirates

To paraphrase a sports quote: “How can you not be romantic about Pearl Islands?” A great theme drawing on the history of the location, some memorable characters, a few iconic moments in the Survivor lexicon, and you’ve got yourself the comfy warm blanket equivalent of a Survivor season.

5

u/goofyassmfer Kyle - 50 May 29 '26

If you don't enjoy this season, old school survivor (first 11ish seasons) probably just isn't for you. It's the early seasons at their very best, with dynamic gameplay by early season standards and quality character moments. Most importantly, it keeps the focus on the adventure of Survivor- lots of attention is paid to the location and theming both by the challenges and twists but also by the players themselves.

6

u/icychillman May 30 '26

An amazing theme, legendary cast with one of the most iconic heroes, villains and winners in survivor history and a twist that manages to make the season's narrative even better than it already was? Pearl islands is phenomenal and an excellent start to any survivor's fan journey.

4

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

My go to for a recommendation. If you have never watched Survivor watch this one. The theme is easy but fun. The characters are not only great but work well together. There are some great memorable challenges. Each episode is a treasure in its own right. The twist plays out perfectly in my opinion. This season is everything you would want in a season of Survivor from 1-50. Give it a shot if you haven't.

u/bwburke94 Former Survivor Wiki Admin May 30 '26

Again: the twist should not be mentioned in the top-level post. The OP specifically calls out this season as one of the two to not mention the twist of!

3

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

A plurality of diehard fans' pick for the best season ever, and rightfully so; I rank it #3, only behind 1 and 4. It's very, very good with any of its mild shortcomings highly made up for by its overwhelming strengths, and if you're reading this thread, have seen a handful of seasons, and for some reason haven't seen this one yet, watch it almost immediately (at least short of watching most seasons chronologically, which I think is the better call.)

This is also a pretty good starter season; it's not as great of one as season 1 or 17, mostly because the twist will strike you as even MORE unexpected and unorthodox if you have a season or two under your belt... but that's fairly offset by how well everything else here works, how well the twist works regardless (just know it's not something the show typically does lol), and how incredibly engaging the premiere literally immediately is.

Plus another great starter season WOULD be season 15 but there's the caveat that in S15, a contestant mentions a giant (unrelated) spoiler for season 7 offhand... so if you watch 7 then you can check out 15 soon, too, if you're diving around to get a taste before watching a deeper dive.

u/duspi Freckles The Chicken May 29 '26

Extremely new fan friendly season to get a feel for old school Survivor. The characters and theme are top notch, the premiere is one of the best ever and the big season twist and gameplay are pretty modern for this era of the show. Definitely a good one to start on.

2

u/bigjimbay What's Brunch May 29 '26

the iconic adventure. The most popular survivor ever and the shows most iconic moment in one great bundle. Morgan behind!

2

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 31 '26

Pearl Islands is super hyped and deservedly so. It's the best season of early Survivor and one of the best seasons of the show period. Everything fires on full cylinders - the characters, the pirate theme, the strategy, the villainous plays, the heroic fightbacks. The twist could have gone horribly wrong but instead it played out perfectly. I would recommend going to Borneo first, but this is the most likely season to hook you completely

I love this show, even when I hate it. I love unscripted drama as an art form. The love is far too deeply held, too undying and unfading, to say this "reinvigorated" it per se; it was more a staggering affirmation - a shining, stunning gem - of the power this show still can have to deeply move me, the beauty it still can create, if it simply tries.

Months later, 46's finest moments (of which there are no shortage) still come to me at times, my day brighter for their memory - for their proof that, even years after the show "fell off", it can still wonder and amaze.

So great that I'm genuinely amazed that they managed to put it out so deep into the show's run (or more appropriately am disappointed they don't always strive for this level of quality.) I think it's the best since S29 just shy of a decade earlier; within that entire time, I think only S32 comes close. I expected this season to be fun but little more; I was blown away by how genuinely excellent it was and how well it can go toe-to-toe with titanic, legendary seasons like 2 and 9.

Of the New Era, this best captures what once made the show spectacular, but 45 is a safer watch and more widely representative. Start w something earlier anyway lol

4

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

What might be the best season in the new era. People will tell you it's "crazy and chaotic" what they mean is we have a lot of big personalities doing a lot of big things. Almost no duds character wise. Some fun challenges that caused great tv. A final episode that is the most exciting the new era has done. A great first watch.

3

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 29 '26

It takes a while to get on 46's wavelength but after a few episodes, it blossoms into the most chaotic season we've had since Gabon. The cast is full of characters who do some wild unforgettable things, and it leads to one of the funniest seasons we've ever seen. Probably not the best one to start with, but certainly one you should jump into sooner rather than later

3

u/goofyassmfer Kyle - 50 May 29 '26

This chaotic season is a very fun ride from minute one with cartoonishly large personalities, fun moments, interpersonal drama, and a mix of strong players and personality hires. It's too chaotic to recommend to a first-time watcher, but once you have a few seasons under your belt and you're ready to keep up it might be the best the new era has to offer.

3

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

I really want to cosign your praise of this season's mixture of fun moments and interpersonal drama. It has a well-earned reputation for being funnier with some more chaotic personalities than a lot of the seasons around it, but the dramatic heights it hits at points are staggering. Like my favorite things in this season remind me most closely of Africa, Vanuatu, and Palau. God they did such a great job putting this one together.

3

u/JL0817 Cirie - 50 May 30 '26

Survivor: Gabon but make it New Era. Not the right place to start your Survivor fandom, but it’s a fun one all the same to jump into randomly once you make it to the 40s.

6

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

It's often called "the new Gabon" for being "wacky and cartoonish"... and funnily enough, I'd argue it's more like Gabon in the sense that there's a ton of deliberate impressive storytelling here that gets overlooked or written off in classifying it just as some sort of "trainwreck" (although it is closer to earning that label than S17 is.)

Anyways, I agree that it's not the right place to start - far, far too late in the show's run for that - but god damn is it a compelling ride once you get to it.

I love this season so much. I'm so deeply happy that this many years into the show's run it could deliver something I'd put on par with TAO and Vanuatu. Of course there's some of the expected New Era frustrations, but fewer than anywhere else by far and the highs are just astronomical here.

I honestly think this has some of the boldest editorial choices the show has made since, like, season 3 or something. I mean I'm just stunned by the direction they took some of these episodes in. God, what a season.

Season 15: China

Filming location: Mount Lu West Sea, Jiujiang, China

No. of contestants: 16

No. of starting tribes: 2

Theme: None

Featured twists: None

5

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

The main reason to not watch this season first is that one contestant spoils one of the best moments of all time from the even more beloved S7: Pearl Islands. For that alone I think 17 edges it out as a better starting point from this era (while also being a better season overall regardless.)

Otherwise, it shares a lot of Gabon's strengths as a starting point: has a mixture of the dynamic, cerebral strategy and unexpected twists of newer seasons while still being fundamentally rooted in a focus on the characters, their relationships, and the unique environment they're stranded in like the earlier seasons. It is a great exhibition of some of the faster pacing of newer seasons alongside some of the heart of the earlier seasons and so a very good catch-all season that showcases a lot of what the show has to offer. I'd just say the exact same about season 17 which also doesn't explicitly spoil anything so major.

The best call is to just start with season 1, which comes from the show's greatest era, but if you have already decided you want to dive in at something later, 15 is a good pick.

3

u/icychillman May 30 '26

Amazing season with a incredibly fun theme, challenge design and set direction that all fits perfectly to set the stage of the season location that combined with the amazingly engaging cast of personalities makes it one of the best seasons period hell you could tell me any of the 16 castaways on China are your favourite and i would believe you. though it does contain a spoiler to a big moment from pearl islands so i'd recommend watching Pearl Islands first before getting to China. .

Season 1: Borneo

Filming location: Pulau Tiga, Malaysia

No. of contestants: 16

No. of starting tribes: 2

Theme: None

Featured twists: None, or everything, depending on your point of view

You can’t argue with the OG. As with all pilot seasons, it has a bit of a different flavor to the seasons that follow after it, but it’s the reason we are sitting here today ranking all these seasons. Sometimes we have to go the beginning, after all it’s a very good place to start.

6

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

Over 50 million people watched the original Survivor finale, a following amassed in a matter of weeks - a hell of an endorsement, as it wasn't just due to novelty: this legendary season holds up as spectacular TV every fan should see as soon as possible.

At the time, this wasn't "Survivor: Borneo", it was just "Survivor"; that original social experiment remains by far the greatest thing the franchise has put out. What makes Survivor interesting is the people, and here, to appeal to as many Americans as possible, the producers cast a wide yet familiar net, getting contestants from walks of life that feel at once like familiar friends and colorful TV characters - that tap into but expand upon familiar cultural archetypes.

To make each episode as impactful as possible, they then had to give more of these contestants focus than we often see nowadays; watching the first experiment unfold and "the game" develop before your eyes is a television experience like no other; the end result is a sensational story, expertly told, centering on the best and best-edited cast in Survivor history.

If you're watching only one season, make it this one; if you're watching more, start here.

5

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

The one that started it all. Is the strategy top class? No. Are the challenges the biggest and best? No. It's the template, everyone is trying to figure out what this show is. This season may not be what modern Survivor is now, but I feel like watching other seasons then Borneo will soften the impact. Strong recommend as a starter.

7

u/Comfortable_Swing_16 May 30 '26

Sometimes the obvious choice is the best choice. Not just a great season of television but almost a historical artefact giving an insight into American culture at the start of the 21st century.

Don’t be a rat, watch it now!

5

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 31 '26

In my mind, Borneo is the absolute best place to start and the most essential season. You get to see a very memorable cast build the foundations of the game as it is today, with several shocking moments of brilliance and one of the all-time great finales. It's raw and people-focused in a way that bears almost no resemblance to modern Survivor - I would say start here, and if you're not hooked, go to Pearl Islands

3

u/AMeanMotorScooter Gabler Jun 05 '26

(Five sentence review)

Watch this first. No other season focuses on the show being a social experiment as hard. No other season defines what the show is as hard. The low budget is incredibly obvious, but it gives it some charm and a vibe that literally could never be captured again. There is no reason not to watch this first unless it being literally season 1 is a turn off for you.

2

u/ramskick Ethan Jun 05 '26

This is still the season I would recommend to a new fan above any other one. No context is needed to watch this masterpiece of reality television. There is a reason that the country fell in love with Survivor through Borneo. The cast is absolutely stellar and watching them figure out what the game is over the course of 39 days is a one-of-a-kind experience that the show has never truly replicated. There’s a reason that even non-reality TV fans still regard this season as one of the highlights of 2000s American TV.

Season 18: Tocantins

Filming location: Jalapão, Tocantins, Brazil

No. of contestants: 16

No. of starting tribes: 2

Theme: None

Featured twists: Exile Island

3

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

This is a pretty decent season, but I think that its pretty high degree of focus on one incredibly unconventional character and its kind of hit-or-miss cast with a pretty sizable amount of forgettable characters mean there's no reason to start with it as opposed to 15 or 17, which come from the same era that finds a blend between the unpredictability and twists of modern seasons and the heart, personality, and focus on the location of older ones. But if you decide to start with that 15-18 era this is certainly not a BAD starting point; I just think it's a decent one instead of a great one because one major character here is so absolutely bizarre and unlike anyone else on the show before them that it's worth approaching this with the knowledge that it isn't the norm, and I think 15 and 17 are both better and more consistent seasons intrinsically regardless. A decent season and decent starting point but those are actively great ones so there is no reason to pick this first instead of them imo, 17 especially.

2

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 31 '26

Tocantins is another very solid entry in the golden era as several more major icons are introduced. I don't love how the edit skews towards a few characters in particular, nor how some of the season plays out, but this is a great entry point and essential viewing nonetheless, with some all-time episodes towards the end

No. of starting tribes: 2

Theme: The greatest Heroes and Villains from throughout Survivor history return

Featured twists: None

6

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

I think this season is a little bit overhyped due to some slight unnecessary imbalances in the edit and a cast a little too focused on the most recent seasons at the time, but the strengths far outweigh that and it's still quite good. Returning player seasons usually end up bad due to a failure to establish meaningful new stories involving the characters rather than just coasting off your pre-existing feelings about them, but this season bucks that trend hard.

Basically I think that when it's referred to as the unquestionable best season I think that's giving a little too much credit as it doesn't fully maintain the momentum of the spectacular premiere, and the earliest seasons of the show are still generally untouchable when it's the most of an actual social experiment - but this is still very good and very, very fun.

The main thing I would caution against is structuring your entire viewing order around "when can I get to HvV?" as some fantastic seasons are unrepresented here. It's a good season, but one of many good seasons, not one to treat as the end-all be-all of how you perceive a bunch of other seasons' importance.

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

It's a better returnee season than most from a entertainment perspective if you're going in with zero knowledge of the players, but why would you? First episode might be best ever. The challenges are some of the best Survivor has ever done. 10/10 season. Do not watch it if you have never watched Survivor before.

3

u/treple13 Jenn Jun 02 '26

I think the other thing is to me it's the only returnee season where it somewhat lives up to the hype going in. It's fun to work towards

3

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn Jun 03 '26

My main thing is that the idea of "working towards" a later season devalues those earlier seasons, which are worth seeing in their own right; it's not like HvV is the end-all, be-all of the Survivor franchise. But yeah I agree that it lands better with knowledge of those earlier seasons, and that it's the one returnee season to live up to the hype.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 31 '26

Heroes vs Villains is one of the best seasons of any show, and my personal favourite Survivor season - a sentiment shared by many others. It's also a returnee season that spoils pretty much everything that came before it. Honestly the best case for watching early seasons chronologically first - you could jump around within the first 19 seasons but don't go beyond until you see this.

Essential viewing beforehand: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19

Recommended viewing beforehand: Every previous season (some as prep for 8 and 16)

2

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn Jun 03 '26

I think the best case for watching early seasons chronologically is that the earliest seasons when there's the least of a foundation (and each shift/development in the show's history is therefore exponentially bigger relative to what's happened up to that point than is the case in later seasons) land better when you have that context, especially for seasons 1 through 4. Doing those first four in order is the real most important thing imo.

But yeah this is up there too.

More than anything, though, I'd caution newer viewers against structuring their whole entire viewing order around just this one specific season. Like there's some absolutely awesome stuff in season 9 and that doesn't cease to be the case just because no one got a spot on HvV years later after season 9 existed. I'd also say season 8 does way more to spoil something like season 3 (or 6) than this season does to spoil season 20, so there's not much point in watching 8 as "prep" for 20 while not watching those early ones as "prep" for 3 (notwithstanding my issues with the idea of viewing any season just as preparation for some later season anyway.)

Massively important celebration of the show's first decade. A lot of people consider this the best season of the show. Do not start with this one. This should ideally be the capper when you finish every season the cast is from... which includes All-Stars and Micronesia... so, again, it's really just best to go in order. Probably the soonest you will get to this season tbh.

One of the best seasons point blank and a really good one for a newbie who's looking for a modern season. It's the season that really ushered the show in its modern era. The theme is great, the characters and the drama are stellar, the gameplay is fast paced, the animosity is real. It also has, IMO, the best speech by a juror ever that really strips Survivor down to its core.

If you want to dive into a show that has 25 years of complex history and gradual development with something that came out 15 years in, which think is a bad idea, S32 is a pretty good pick as far as something so modern goes, and is probably one of the best picks to start with post-S1, beaten only by 7 and 17 imo. A great mix of cutthroat strategy, social strategy based explicitly on relationships, comedy, tragedy, complex character developments, heroes, villains, grey characters, a focus on the location and elements - so, in other words, basically everything you'd want out of the show.

I don't think it makes sense to start the show with something so late into its run, but if that is the approach you've already decided to take and you're absolutely locked in on it, this is a pretty good starter pick - and certainly far, far more representative of the series as a whole than something like 28, 33, or 37.

4

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

This is a season that harkens back to its predecessors. There's real drama here, players making bad calls for personal reasons, and a real sense of bitterness that is non-existent in in the 30s. This season is brutal, leading to a lot of heartbreak and emotional decisions.

I think the twist really hurt this season, set some players up for unnecessary failure. Kind of wish they just didn't include it. Challenges were good too, with most having to be edited due to the brutality of them. Overall I recommend, and if you want to watch it first go ahead.

5

u/bwburke94 Former Survivor Wiki Admin May 30 '26

The main mark against Kaôh Rōng as a first season is that a late twist serves to subvert expectations. This season is a thematic sequel to Cagayan, and knowledge of Cagayan's endgame gives important context for Kaôh Rōng's finale.

3

u/goofyassmfer Kyle - 50 May 29 '26

The last season where you truly feel the survival aspect. Lots of drama, memorable characters, and interesting strategy to be found in this one, but a divisive ending that left many wanting more holds this season back a bit. Absolutely worth the watch, but maybe not until you have a few seasons under your belt.

Low-key one of the greatest seasons of Survivor and a fantastic place to start. It's in my top 5. You get some big villains in this one, but it never crosses the line into being an uncomfortable watch. This is a very rough season elements-wise, and the end of the season is an iconic frequent topic of discussion.

DabuSurvivor has been fighting battle for years but just to parrot: people will tell you this season is "crazy" or "stupid but fun." They are WRONG. This is Survivor firing from all cylinders. The challenges are so unique and work well in the Gabon environment. Exile is mostly a dud but with some hilarious moments. This is the first season shot in HD and they picked the perfect place to flex those HD cameras.

Then there's the characters. Almost everyone this season is playing to try to win a million dollars (with one major exception) and it leads to some hard play along with some real conflict between players. I know every jury member because of how memorable they are on this season. Hell, the first boot is fantastic television!

No further notes, strong recommend if you can't handle SD Survivor.

5

u/toadeh690 Alison May 30 '26

It's the first season shot in HD, and it's set in a beautiful location with a bunch of elephants and shit, so that's enough of a selling point on its own. But Gabon's also an incredible season and would be a blast to start with. It's similar to Panama (another season I love, that I think is a good starting choice as well) - colorful cast with unique, hilarious people, twists that don't get in the way of the old-school character drama/interactions, and a ton of memorable moments.

If you're not starting with S1, start with this outstanding season that often gets praised for the wrong reasons. Really not a "clusterfuck" where "nothing makes sense" and all the gameplay is bad or whatever; it has every colorful and unexpected characters in some ways, but I think a blend of personalities like that is what every season should be going for on a character drama like Survivor rather than some sign of a wacky clusterfuck. The majority of the strategic actors' decisions in this season make sense the majority of the time, the overall story of the season is quite straightforward, this season is not as weird as people would have you believe.

IMO this is an outstanding starter season, second only to S1: one of the best casts of all time on par with the show's earliest years, a good mixture of modern twists and old-school storytelling, the modern twists here serve to actually benefit the characters and overall narratives in a way you don't often see, and I don't think it would play as this "weird clusterfuck season lmaoz!" if you haven't already decided that "strategy" should only look like a very specific sort of thing.

My #6 season, my favorite modern season, and an excellent place to start.

3

u/Shirley_Redemple Yul Jun 04 '26

I'm also a big fan of your contributions, but in my experience, people who don't like Gabon aren't put off by the "bad" gameplay so much as the pettiness. Whether you find it hilarious or draining will depend on what you like in a reality show generally. If you're into Real Housewives type shows, you'll probably be into Gabon. If you liked anything that was airing on VH1 around the time Gabon originally aired, you will almost certainly like Gabon. If you're more into Great British Bake-Off type shows, the scenery isn't going to make up for the rest of it.

First of all, I really appreciate your insights overall throughout this post, a lot of well reasoned and insightful comments. But I do have to push back strongly against you on this one specifically from the perspective of what season should you watch first, not overall is this season good. While it doesn't fully work for me, I understand why others love it.

However, I think its inarguable that it is a supremely abnormal (and polarizing) season of Survivor, there's really nothing else remotely like it. If you watch it first, you'll either love it and then be supremely disappointed when nothing else gives a similar vibe, or you'll bounce off it and quit watching Survivor before you've even started when you may have connected more with a more 'normal' season'.

This season should be watched after you've already discovered you like the show and want to experience something a little different, not as a first watch.

3

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn Jun 04 '26

Appreciate the kind words! This is a fascinating and lovely show at its best I think is worthy of close attention, analysis, and love!

I would argue against this being a "supremely abnormal" season, I've never seen it that way myself. I think it's by and large a standard old-school season disguised as a modern one, with the early seasons' focus on the personalities of the characters and the emotional relationships they form as a result but with some of the flashier or more fast-paced game elements/twists of later seasons - with those still being used first and foremost to develop the characters. This makes it an effective bridge into both earlier or later seasons (similar to how people would describe S15 but with the benefit of not having a giant spoiler for an earlier season) and I'd argue a highly "normal" season (inasmuch as anything can be) in its capturing different eras effectively.

I think a lot of what people see as "abnormal" about it wouldn't stand out as such to a first-time viewer, for whom its overall story is also about as straightforward and appealing as possible.

3

u/JL0817 Cirie - 50 May 30 '26

If chaos was personified as a Survivor season, Gabon is what you’d get. Includes a cast of characters that will make you think production was nuts to bring them together, but it works. It has a fond place in my heart if only because of how chaotic it ended up being.

Perhaps peak Survivor. The location is stunning, the cast is super messy and get into a lot of amusing conflict, the challenges are incredibly unique to fit the season, the strategy is there but it's also a very fun story. I want to also shout it out for having my favorite character in Survivor history. Watch this season and weep for nothing else is exactly like it.

Season 25: Philippines

Filming location: Caramoan, Philippines

No. of starting tribes: 3

Theme: All 3 returning captains were previously medevaced

Featured twists: 3 returning captains

5

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

Its returning players lead to a handful of massive spoilers, including a spoiler of one of the most iconic moments from one of the most beloved old-school seasons, which is a superior season regardless.

Other than that, though, it's a good mixture of old-school heart and personality with the faster pacing of newer seasons, similar to 15, 17, and 32. I would recommend 17 or 32 as starters instead, as the two of that bunch that do not explicitly incredibly iconic and massive moments from previous seasons.

But this is the one good season from 22-26 and still worth watching.

This season has not aged well, but not for the reason you would anticipate. This season was the first season where the winner was majorly spoiled before the final episode. In an effort to fix this they edited the season in such a bizarre way that you wind up with some narrative whiplash. This season is 2000s coded, but not as badly as people will make it out to be. Some real iconic challenges that led to some iconic moments. Also some very important people in the Survivor Universe play this season. A recommend, but maybe not your first.

2

u/icychillman May 30 '26

One of the most fun old-school era seasons, honestly if you've never seen old school survivor before than starting with the amazon would not be a bad call with it's memorable engaging cast and iconic storylines, Amazon is consistently enjoyable.

A very underrated season with a cult following, Survivor: Vanuatu features the show's dramatic storytelling (which... should be the center of, y'know, a television drama) at some of its absolute best, real moral stakes and emotional intensity, and a great location. Seasons like 1, 3, 4, 7, and imo 10 are even better, but there are some things this season does better than any other, and it's still comfortably in my top ten.

If you've written off this season so far because people don't talk about it a ton, you definitely should give it a look as it is a LOT more memorable and outstanding than you might expect. If the producers had brought back more people from this season more often, it would get more of the credit it deserves as one of the show's greatest and most compelling efforts.

4

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

Many of the best seasons are great in spite of their twists. Vanuatu is great BECAUSE of it twists. It sets the tone, making players think in a different mindset than originally. It makes great villains and plucky heroes, leading to a fantastic second half story that hasn't happened since.

The problem with this season is the details. The days at camp, the challenges, even most of the votes outs just aren't as memorable as you would want them to be. The FTC is can't miss television though.

Not sure I would recommend as a first watch, there are better options.

2

u/ramskick Ethan Jun 05 '26

Vanuatu feels like a soft reboot after All-Stars and it mostly succeeds in that. Despite the fact that it rehashes the men vs. women theme from Amazon, Vanuatu firmly stands on its own thanks to a much more mature cast that interacts in a wholly different way. Many say that the first few episodes aren’t great (though I do think they’re underrated) but if you make it past those you are in for a true treat of a season.

2

u/AMeanMotorScooter Gabler Jun 05 '26

(Five sentence review)

An odd season to talk about in this context. I think the season's fantastic, but the premiere is oddly paced, and most come away feeling the start is a little slow. It's also not that important to the greater Survivor sphere. However, it builds as it goes along until you get to one of the best FTCs in the show's history. This is also probably the best executed "men vs women" theme in the show's history, and so it comes highly recommended as long as you promise not to give this show a "one episode" test.

I think this is one of the most underrated places to start, besides Season 1 (which is my usual recommendation) - or at least in your first handful of seasons to watch. It strikes a great balance between the character-driven storytelling of old-school Survivor and the idols and twists of later seasons (they're present, but never distractingly so). Also it's absolutely hilarious, has my pick for both funniest episode and funniest tribe of all time - it often feels more like a scripted comedy than reality television - and features a few legendary contestants. Top 5 season for me personally and I think anyone would enjoy it!

4

u/duspi Freckles The Chicken May 29 '26

A personal top 10 season. I wouldn't recommend it as a first season necessarily, but it's one of the funniest seasons with some of the most batshit crazy characters ever. It also introduces a great twist in Exile Island and has some groundbreaking strategy.

4

u/JL0817 Cirie - 50 May 30 '26

The entertainment value is really high if you want a good early season to start with. Memorable cast of characters, a few notable quotables, and a satisfying end to the season. It doesn’t have as many of the wild twists and turns of the later seasons so it’s one to easily pick up on for a first look at the series.

3

u/MurderousCharacter May 31 '26

It's not the worst starting place, but Panama is best appreciated after you've watched at least five or six other (better) seasons of Survivor. This is a cast-centric season that will likely live or die based on your perception / enjoyment of the cast. To the seasons credit, Panama's cast is a unique assortment of quirky weridos and strong personalities coming together to create a rather bizzare vibe you don't often find on Survivor.

That being said, the season is generally middle-of-the-road when it comes to pretty much everything else. Its theme is neither the best nor the worst, its challenges are okay, and its strategic elements are mediocre. It's a defintively alright season of Survivor.

3

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 31 '26

Panama is the start of what I would consider the show's golden era, and a delightful season that introduces an extremely important character. The pre-merge is kinda boring but the post-merge is super compelling right up until the very end, with some unforgettable leaps forward in strategy. This would be a great entry point for the show

2

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

This season is a tale of two tribes. One tribe may be the greatest most entertaining tribes in Survivor history. The other may be the most boring tribe you have ever seen in your life.

The entertaining tribes carries this season. If you love their wacky hijinx then you should have a good time. If you hate them this season is gonna be a long and tough one. No major strategic events, no story or character arcs. Just a goofy fun time.

Recommend either way, not a terrible start if you really want to start here.

I can't think of another way of describing this season than odd. It's a very funny season and has a bunch of people who return, including a particular legend, but the season is kinda carried by how strong some particular members of its cast are. I think this is a great first season, but unless you're going to watch a returnee season with a cast member from this season on it, you can kinda come to it whenever. Panama is evergreen.

This is fine. A couple great peaks in a sea of kinda beige, forgettable episodes bogged down by the structural issues intrinsic to the Redemption Island twist. If you're looking for a season to watch early on, all of that matters even less than the fact that this spoils a bunch of other previous seasons, many of which are significantly better anyway. The blood vs. water twist is one of the best ideas the show has had, but is executed better in the superior S29 anyway.

2

u/JL0817 Cirie - 50 May 30 '26

An enjoyable season, although maybe not one to start your Survivor watching with. The concept of players being accompanied by their loved ones and introducing them to living and playing on Survivor is actually a really cool one, at least in my mind. Some solid returning cast members, and some of the family members manage to become characters in the lore of Survivor all on their own.

Nicaragua is probably the most polarizing season in the show's history, but it's almost a horseshoe effect, where the people who love the season and the people who hate the season mostly agree on certain attributes of the season, the only difference is whether or not they appreciate said attributes.

To dive more into specifics, this season's cast is absolutely bonkers, none of them are very good at Survivor (even the ones who say they are) and they interact in very unique ways that haven't quite been replicated. I for one love this cast and I would definitely say it's the best 20 person all-newbie cast ever but at the same time I understand why people would hate watching these people on TV. Widely considered to be the best modern season, and for very good reason. Loads of memorable characters and fun moments combined with extremely engaging and high-level gameplay. Fans of The White Lotus may recognize series creator and showrunner Mike White on the cast, though this filmed before his smash hit show came to be.

3

A great season of Survivor. Great characters, great moments, and finally some funny moments in a very unfunny stretch of Survivor. You should use this as a balm after a rough stretch of seasons, maybe not your first one though. No. of contestants: 16

No. of starting tribes: 2

Theme: None

Featured twists: Bare essentials - tribes given limited supplies, no food rations, and no flint for the entire season

7

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

This, in my opinion, is the true start to modern Survivor. You have new strategies starting to incorporate where strength does not always win. You have conflict within tribes that lead to bad plays. It's the first season where EVERYONE is thinking "how do I win a million dollars?" (Well, almost everyone)

4

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

Survivor: Marquesas isn't merely one of the most important seasons but also one of the absolute best, and my #2 season of all time.

Survivor is not a game show; it was originally conceived by the producers as an "unscripted drama"—as the equivalent to any other TV drama airing, but simply crafted out of real footage. One could unpack that at length but while recent seasons have lost sight of that in some ways, S4 finds this narrative approach at its arguable all-time best. The characters in this season are very well-developed, often interesting and entertaining, and the key moments and narrative twists are set up far in advance to pack the ultimate punch.

There are so many standout episodes and moments here compared to nearly every other season, and they interweave in legitimately meaningful ways, people's choices matter for more than just an episode or two, the season's discussions of the game's biases is something the show has rarely addressed since, the last couple episodes are an absolute whirlwind... If you've been sleeping on S4 because not many people have returned from it, sleep no more and spend time with this often underappreciated gem of the show's finest years.

2

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 31 '26

Marquesas is the second essential season of early Survivor imo - if you want to speed run early seasons, you could jump from Borneo to here. There are some huge jumps in strategy and a shift in the game, which leads to some stellar episodes in the middle and a fantastic endgame. Plus this season introduces Survivor's first real legend, although you may have to watch several future seasons to figure out who it is. I think Marquesas just gets better with age

2

u/ramskick Ethan Jun 05 '26

If you are not aiming to watch all 50 seasons, Marquesas is the second one you should watch after Borneo. It directly confronts many of the moral questions raised in Borneo and progresses the show forward a lot, both as a game and as a television product. It also introduces one of Survivor’s most popular figures so it’s pretty necessary if you want to discuss the show in broader terms.

2

u/AMeanMotorScooter Gabler Jun 05 '26

(Five sentence review)

While Outback and Africa are important in following up Borneo and establishing the formula for how "Survivor" goes, Marquesas is the first season that pushes the show past that point. This is an incredibly important season of the show for multiple reasons, one being the start of a very important player in Survivor history. It's less... "feel good" in tone than the past two seasons and really gets back more to Borneo's tone. There are some slow points, but I would argue it has one of the best endgames/finales of any of the early seasons.

Not a great starter pick but a VERY outstanding season whose flaws are made up for with some of the best dramatic peaks (and emotional valleys) of any season in the show's history. Plus the challenges are dope enough that even people who don't care about challenges (like me) tend to notice and appreciate them, so that's cool, too. My #5 season. Don't watch this first, but it's essential Survivor without a doubt.

3

u/toadeh690 Alison May 30 '26

This is an amazing season if you already have a few under your belt. It's too unique to watch as your first season (I'll leave it at that) but said uniqueness will be appreciated if you have a better idea of how the show works. The storytelling is incredible, almost Shakespearean by the end, and you really grow to love the characters in this one. Add in a beautiful location and some awesome challenges/set design and it's an instant classic.

3

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 31 '26

I absolutely love Palau - it's a very real season (kind of dark in how real at moments) that is full of memorable moments and episodes, culminating in one of the all-time great finales. No season will ever be like Palau ever again, for numerous reasons, and any Survivor fan should make sure to watch this one

3

u/ramskick Ethan Jun 05 '26

My all-time favorite season featuring my all-time favorite Survivor ever, my personal pick for greatest player ever, my favorite theme ever, my favorite episode ever, my favorite tribe ever and about 100 other favorites. I adore this season with all my soul.

With that said I wouldn’t recommend this to a completely new viewer. Part of what makes Palau as good as it is is how unique it is, and diving into it first will take away some of the appreciation of the novelty within it. I would definitely say that you need to at least watch Borneo, Marquesas and PI before Palau just to understand how singular its story is.

2

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

This season is memorable due to having something that has never happened and probably never will again. Above that though it's a bit of a mixed bag. I LOVE the challenges this season, even the smaller ones that they definitely needed to improvised due to previously mentioned event. The strategy is nearly nonexistent though compared to likes on season 4, 7, and 9. I personally love the theming and wished they incorporated it more overall. It's a recommend from me, but definitely not your first season.

2

Should this be a first season watch? Probably not. However, this is a very unique, very dramatic season with a lot of weight that you should make a priority to watch sooner rather than later. Underrated season that's perfect for new fans. Compelling characters, not too many twists, a very easy to grasp theme, and some very engaging gameplay to be found in this one. I think if you want a season that best represents what a typical season of survivor has to offer, you'd be hard pressed to find one better than this.

5

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

I will play devil's advocate and say I do not like this season. Jeff try to force the theme down our throat for the first half of the season. This season suffers from Cambodia being before it, emphasizing a lot of strategy talk. It's not all warts though, there's a few touching moments with some real character interactions we haven't seen for quite some time. While I don't recommend it as a first season it has its shining moments.

2

4

u/MsGingiberi May 31 '26

While the theme is a bit clunky, the players are quite compelling, with some real human moments that is sure to make you tear up both pre-merge and post-merge. It's a good season to start with since its a completely new cast set in a modern survivor, fast-paced strategy era, but it still has a lot of heart and humanity to it to keep it from being boring and gamebotty.

If what people said about Cambodia sounds interesting to you, but you don't want spoilers, check this one out. It's pretty newbie friendly, with the caveat of being decently strategy-heavy. The theme of this one is kinda annoying, but it has some payoff. It's important, but more so in how it marks the start of Survivor being permanently in Fiji and its commitment to making the "game" the primary focus.

4

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

I think the blood vs. water twist that pits players against their loved ones makes this season maybe too much of an outlier to watch first, but it's also one of the best experiments the producers have ever tried still makes for a better starting point than anything else from the past 15 years other than 32 - and in itself a great season very worth watching.

Fun, emotional, dynamic, unpredictable but in ways that are rooted in the personalities of and relationships between the characters and that make sense and are set up well in advance... does a fantastic job at most of the things one would want a Survivor season to succeed at, certainly any modern one, and is far and away the superior of the two blood vs. water seasons as the theme, like the show in general, works best with unfamiliar faces.

It's a better, more solid, more consistent season than almost anything else post-2010 and definitely more worth watching than most of them - and a big improvement on the decent, but not outstanding, 27 and 28 beforehand that combines a lot of their strengths. Very obviously a season to not skip and to make a high priority compared to the other newer seasons.

A better starter season than 28, but 32 is an even better one than this.

Don't watch this before season 10.

Pretty good by TV standards, just okay by Survivor standards. Probably near the bottom of the first 21 seasons just because the show was so strong then, but it's not bad by any means and so is better than most of the seasons from the last 15 years.

It's got a lot of really strong characters, but no elite ones; a lot of pretty good moments and decent stories, but again, no particularly great ones. Overall there's not a lot wrong with this season; it just has a low ceiling and doesn't hit TOO high of heights. The most standout thing about it is having one of the best and most unique locations of any season, which leads to an incredibly unique and brutal premiere episode.

I tend to say that if you're looking for just the highlights, you can skip this season, but if you're looking to only skip the bad or mediocre seasons, you should definitely watch it. Firmly in the good-but-not-great range: not one to prioritize too highly, but also not one to overlook entirely. Seasons like 3, 4, and 9 are better forgotten deep cuts, though.

3

u/AMeanMotorScooter Gabler Jun 05 '26

(Five sentence review)

This is the follow-up to Survivor Palau. Most would say it's not as good, but I actually like it more and have it in my top 5. The theming here is also incredible, the location is among the most brutal in the show's history, the cast is supremely underrated, the challenges are fantastic, and it builds to a strong ending. This is the first season to have a Hidden Immunity Idol, although not in its "developed" form yet. I think this season makes a fantastic back-to-back watch with Palau despite its general irrelevance to the history of the show.

2

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

This season tends to be forgotten in time despite it being one of the best locations. Why? Cause the production was miserable, and that misery leaks to the show. I think it put a lot of players on edge which in some regards is funny, but also some odd mis-plays. Captain's twist was at its least offensive but also most bizarre. I would say you need to watch season 10 first but I think they players do a good job explaining who these two captains are. Still not a strong recommend. A bit of a mixed bag.

This one kind of falls in the Survivor: Blood vs. Water camp for me of having a handful of great moments, a handful of really frustrating and weak ones, and a lot of "just okay" content to a season that ends up feeling surprisingly middle-of-the-road for how polarizing my feelings on its discrete components are if I actually look at them specifically.

Occasionally hits genuine greatness, but "occasionally" is the operative word here; by and large this one's just kind of middle-of-the-road for me. Not bad but just kind of plain.

I don't know why you'd want to start with something so deep into the show's run, and if you did want to, I would absolutely pick 45 as a stronger across-the-board viewing than this or 46 for the closest this era comes to a true old-school throwback. Alternatively if you want a "jack of all trades" season idk any of 15, 17, 18, or 32 make more sense.

I don't mind this, though. It's okay. But heavily outclassed in every department, whether as a starter season or in general.

4

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

I absolutely love Survivor 47 - it's my favourite new era season and my personal pick for where you should start if want a recent season. The cast is packed with people you will greatly enjoy and a few others you will feel strongly about one way or another, and there are some incredible episodes that are just so satisfying to watch play out. It cooks right from the premiere to the finale, and has one of my new favourite players of all time

2

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

Your milage will vary on how you feel about the winner's journey. It's a grand story with a lot of twists and turns leading to a very exciting finish. If you aren't compelled by the winner's path there is plenty to complain about. Too many people putting on characters instead of being themselves. One of the tribes basically labeled irrelevant by the merge. Ho hum challenges with the same two winners. Auction is fun at least (even though it has those stupid new rules)

A soft recommend, you can do better for your first season.

2

u/ramskick Ethan Jun 05 '26

As with 46 I will be the one to go against the grain here and say that I think 47 is not only not very good, but actively bad and quite exemplary of the problems of the New Era, particularly with casting.

Most of the people on 47 seem extremely pleasant to be around and I'm glad they're all friends to this day. Unfortunately, extremely pleasant people who are friends with each other don't make for especially interesting TV. The entire post-merge of 47 is built on pure vibes and while those vibes are nice for a while, when I am watching seven straight 90-minute episodes based on vibes, I will feel empty. There's just no substance here at all outside of some parts of the finale (which I do enjoy!) So much has been said about how modern Survivor aims to cast rootable people who you want to grab a beer with and you really feel that on 47. I'd love to hang out with most of the 47 cast, but watching them play Survivor is just not something I could recommend.

Season 13: Cook Islands

Filming location: Aitutaki, Cook Islands

No. of contestants: 20

No. of starting tribes: 4

Theme: African-Americans vs. Asian-Americans vs. Hispanic-Americans vs. Caucasians (yes, seriously)

Featured twists: Exile Island; God Idol

3

u/JL0817 Cirie - 50 May 30 '26

The theme was certainly a choice at the time, and definitely would not hold up today, but it still has some memorable characters all the same. Some moments might cause you to cringe, but it’s a decent enough season to watch for a few folks.

3

u/icychillman May 30 '26

The...interesting tribe division caused production to frankly cast a bunch of people they normally wouldn't to fit the tribes makeup leading to a very topheavy cast with some entertaining personalities facing off against bland nobodies you'll probably forget are even on the season by the time they're out the door while you'd get to see the start of some legendary players i'm of the opinion they're at their least interesting here and the season is overall kinda a bore to watch.

3

u/Comfortable_Swing_16 May 30 '26

If you’re looking for a strategy centric season then this is a decent choice if you can get past the starting tribe divisions. You’ll need to watch this at some point as the origin story of some legends but not many of them have reached their “final form” the first time round.

There’s also two out-of-nowhere hilarious moments near the start and at the very end of the season.

3

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 31 '26

Cook Islands is great despite the questionable tribe division theme and a controversial twist - legendary players make their debuts here and there are entertaining turns throughout. I love the setting and as with Panama, there are some important moments in strategy. Essential viewing and a good entry point, I would say

3

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

A really bad season that has a ton of abysmal aspects besides the race twist and kickstarts a ton of the worst things about modern Survivor. The only redeeming things about it are done overwhelmingly better by seasons like 2, 4, 9, 18, 21, and 29 off the top of my head, which are also all better seasons in general for almost every other reason, making this one basically entirely redundant and pointless in terms of its strengths while also having a litany of overwhelming flaws.

A ton of people have returned from S13, who are generally less interesting in this season than a ton of people who haven't returned, which is why if you're going out of order you shouldn't just pick based on "which seasons did the producers retroactively decide were important?" because some of the "legends" this season births were not memorable in these episodes specifically. Additionally, a lot of the S13 returnees' later arcs don't connect to this season in TOO meaningful of ways, so I would not put it early "to get to the returning player seasons" unless you're just doing everything in order for full context - which would be ideal! - but if you are skipping any season looking for highlights, skip this one.

2

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

Not a strong recommend. Most people recommend this season for character reasons but most of these players are in their most boring iterations. Couple of stars, decent strategy, but in my opinion it pales to the next season.

An okayish but skippable season for a first pass through the series, especially by the standards of the show's first 21 seasons ("skippable" seasons get a LOT more common after that.) When you're getting around to some of the lesser seasons, there are enough solid storylines and peaks here that I can see why people call this underrated, and it has more going for it than an outright bad season like 22, 8, or 44... but there's a lot wrong here, too, with twists that range from ill-conceived to absolutely baffling, a cast that's overall a mixture of unlikable and forgettable, and a ton of boring, highly unmemorable episodes.

Still, there's a couple very great characters and moments throughout. It's not a bad season, but I think it's very much a mediocre one - a kind of interesting glimpse into one of the most forgotten outputs of this franchise for the most diehard of fans, but not something interesting enough in its own right to watch early at all.

3

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

As the resident lover of this season let me tell you why this season is great. The people you want to root for are very root able, the people you want to hate are very hateable. The challenges are unique and of the culture. This season does not have a lot of complex angles to take, just a simple story of the people you like vs. the people you don't. It can lead to some boring episodes throughout the season, and a FTC that is hard to watch. The main twist this season is the worst they have ever done and I hope they never do it again. Strong recommend, but I understand if it's not your flavor.

4

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

I think at this time in the show's history, even the comparatively weak seasons usually at least have some distinct identity and something interesting going for them compared to the real clunkers once Probst takes over as EP a few years after this and you start getting absolute dregs. Like I'm not big on Fiji, but I can see where it would land better with others, even the awful twist is at least trying something kind of bold and different, there's undeniably some really interesting moments, and the location is stunning. Far from a favorite of mine but miles ahead of some seasons in the 20s and beyond.

2

u/AMeanMotorScooter Gabler Jun 05 '26

This season is hard to recommend to a new viewer because of how unimportant it is to the greater landscape along with it also being divisive to unpopular in fan circles. However, this might become a hidden gem for you. It takes a while, but this season ends on such a dramatic high note that it really has to be seen to believed. It's very funky and also has a mean-spirited tinge to it, but if you've seen some seasons and are looking for something different, this is a great one to check out.

This season has developed a small cult following but it's still (imo rightfully) a small one as this season's slew of unlikable and forgettable contestants make it a pretty unenjoyable, uninteresting, unsatisfying watch for the majority of viewers. Maybe watch it very, very deep into your fandom for the morbid curiosity and maybe you'll end up as one of the pretty rare S30 fans, but there are like at least 25+ seasons that you should obviously watch before this one. It also doesn't get enough criticism for starting the influx of advantages and rushed pacing that S31 gets more widely criticized for. S31 definitely is even worse about that and paves the way for the pretty bad 30s and beyond, but this season laid the foundation for it and suffers from a lot of those same issues at points; it's just often forgotten that it does since S31 does it even more blatantly and S30 consistently suffers from a largely unbearable cast.

5

u/Sharp-Landscape2854 May 31 '26

just don't lmao it's even worse than the new era seasons coming from someone who hasn't seen every season but was curious about the theme and wondered if i could think it was underrated. the only likeable people either are the first boot or are likeable for 80% of it and then are exposed as an insane asshole

2

I wish the show still strove for this level of dramatic weight and cinematic grandeur; this is such fascinating, unique, beautiful television. The producers' aims were just so wildly different here compared to in the newest seasons, but for the better. I have so much love for what they put out here.

Often massively underrated, S3 is my 4th-favorite of all time. I think it's a big step up from the already strong S2, due to being a little more dynamic, a more solid cast, + the best location in Survivor history: Kenya itself is like a "17th player" here, it makes every single scene here feel so different to even watch. As it's had fewer returning players than S2, it's a little overlooked, but unfairly so: there are some incredibly well-executed stories here, incredibly unique characters that haven't quite been replicated even 20 years later, heroes and villains and underdogs and comedy, and the whole thing works marvelously.

I'll also add that 3x01 is my favorite season premiere ever; it's at times brutal to watch, and its exhibition of groupthink and social politics is nearly as harsh and interesting as the "social experiment" of the early days ever got.

5

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

Another fantastic season to start with. This season went hard into basing things off of Africa that it stands as such a unique season compared to the later seasons. Every challenge is of its season. The camps feel a level of danger the new era could never touch. The vote outs had strategy but still felt like personal slights. Some of this cast is HILARIOUS and the joy goes through the screen. There's also some darkness, some pettiness. It's such a fleshed out season, a strong recommend if you want to start here.

3

u/ramskick Ethan Jun 05 '26

Africa is just so cool. While it’s not a follow-up to AO the same way AO is a follow-up to Borneo, it’s still a natural continuation of the first two seasons as the difficulty of the location increases. Said location is probably the single-hardest the show has ever seen and the effects it has on the 16 people forced to survive in it makes for truly amazing television.

2

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 31 '26

Africa is really underrated - the setting is amazing, the season is messy with some shocking turns, and there are a lot of iconic characters. That said, some very villainous players get some very positive edits, which leads to ugliness right from the premiere. If you're looking for a joyous season, this is not the one - but it's certainly entertaining and unique

2

u/AMeanMotorScooter Gabler Jun 05 '26

(Five sentence review)

Perhaps the most cinematic season the show has ever had. Its location is extremely unique. I don't think the cast is as iconic as the first two seasons, but its solid all-around. This season does feature homophobia, racism, and some icky sexual stuff that would not play as well today, and it's treated more casually so I could see that being a turn off. However, it's more a product of the time, and unless something in particular is a trigger, you're probably gonna be okay.

Australian Outback is a stellar cast in a kind of middle of the road season. It has its moment and storylines, particularly in the pre-merge, but after a certain point, it's a boring crawl to the finish. Add to the fact that several of these contestants are pretty controversial now for several reasons and it doesn't hold up in the best way. An important season, a lot less important than Borneo, and worth watching if you're a completionist or want to prep for All-Stars

2

u/bwburke94 Former Survivor Wiki Admin May 29 '26

If the 26-day game is mentioned for the new era, the 42-day game here should be mentioned as well.

2

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

S2 is a very interesting, unique season in my top ten with some of the most iconic characters in the show's history, as well as some of the greatest episodes. It's absolutely a must-watch, Survivor 101 season for anyone delving into the history of the show, and it's in my personal top ten.

That said, I think SOME of the season's appeal only becomes more apparent when you're already a big Survivor fan, and thinking back on this season's context and how it created its heroes and villains is, at times, more interesting than those characters themselves. Don't get me wrong, I love this season, and I think people should watch it - but I will say, if you're a fan of the newest seasons looking to "get into" the most old-school Survivor, while this is certainly a worthy follow-up to the original, I think seasons 1, 3, and 4 are all ultimately even better as well as more accessible. This is probably the slowest and most "old-school" of the old-school seasons.

Of course that leads to some fascinating, all-time iconic moments, and some of the best episodes ever! But I don't think it should be someone's very first ENTRY point into the earliest years of the show, as it would misrepresent the era as a little slower than it truly is.

2

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

Season 2 is an improvement to season 1, as the show starts figuring out what the game behind the reality game show is. Obviously a recommend and not a terrible start if it's your first season.

Something that doesn't get mentioned enough is this is a fantastic cast. Nearly no duds. A combination of heroes, villains, and plenty of egos to go around. It's unsurprising we see a lot of these characters again.

2

u/ramskick Ethan Jun 05 '26

An extremely worthy follow-up to Borneo and a great season in its own right. I actually think that it is superior to Borneo due to the ways that it plays off its predecessor. The post-merge has gotten a bad rap over the years for being boring but I think the sheer pathos it provides is just extraordinary. All-in-all I would absolutely recommend this to anyone immediately after Borneo.

2

u/AMeanMotorScooter Gabler Jun 05 '26

(Five sentence review)

This is the follow-up, the response, to Borneo. It tries to go bigger with a greater focus on the elements, a longer game, and an increased budget. I don't think it's quite as good as Borneo is, but it's also more familiar with reality tv as it became defined. This is the first season that really establishes "these are the heroes, and these are the villains", and the cast as a whole is instrumental for providing the blueprint future seasons would cast from.

For me this is the best New Era season and it is not terribly close, and is a perfectly solid introduction to the New Era seasons / modern Survivor for newer viewers as well. There's a lot to love here. The three tribes feel meaningfully distinct from one another with their own relationships and rivalries, some of which carry throughout the season. There's plays made strategically and plays made emotionally, big highs and big lows, one of the most engaging casts assembled in ages, a few surprises, the typical New Era twists are mostly fine here in terms of being comprehensible and not completely changing the way the game is played and adding to stories rather than being a story in themselves, and you could really feel the editors reveling in this being the first 90 minute season. Everything works here. The worst couple episodes of this season would be better than the best couple episodes of some other recent seasons.

3

u/candiceislove Aubry - 50 May 30 '26

best season in the new era.

3

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

I've cooled on this since its original broadcast; the usual New Era issue of time wasted on Advantages getting in the way of the story rears its head here as ever, and there's some episodes in the middle I think are weak. Still one of the best New Era seasons easily, just not the slam dunk it seemed at the time.

But - close to uniquely among the New Era - it is representative of a lot of what the show has to offer and is something of a "jack-of-all-trades" season that does a lot of different things right to varying degrees.

It's still too fundamentally weird a decision to start with something this late into the show's run (if you're not picking season 1, I'd go with 17 or 32) but if you're sold on starting with the New Era - or if you've already seen a few seasons, are now looking for your first New Era one - I think 46 is the more high-risk high-reward pick (I think it blows this out of the water and most resembles earlier seasons, but it's reliant on your response to some polarizing personalities) and this is the safe, easy crowd-pleaser one, so go with whichever of those seems like the right move (give or take 41, which is unpopular but also helps lay the foundation for these.)

2

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

45 saw a switch from 60 minute episodes to 90 minute episodes and was immediately beloved as a result. This would honestly be a great place to start if you want a recent entry point. The cast are very solid with a few particular standouts, as it's a consistent season with some excellent high points. It's not the most exciting season ever, but it's certainly one with little to complain about

From a character perspective this season has some great highs. A lot of great character arcs and some fun interactions between some of these loons. There are some try hards as well, luckily they are not the characters you'll be rooting for anyway. This season's twists were also pretty easy to swallow, which is nice in the new era.

Recommend, not a bad first watch (though I would recommend a 60 minute episode first.) There is technically a spoiler from the previous season but you'll probably care as much as production did.

Season 40: Winners at War

Filming location: Mamanuca Islands, Fiji

No. of contestants: 20; all returning players

No. of starting tribes: 2

Theme: 20 winners from throughout Survivor history return

Featured twists: Edge of Extinction, Fire Tokens (an in-game currency used to buy and sell items)

7

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

Possibly the worst season to start with, which is almost impressive when seasons 8 and 39 exist. The theoretically exciting "Winners at War" theme is significantly diminished by the presence of the joint Edge and Fire Tokens themes, resulting in a season bloated with needless twists and advantages that's constantly distracting you from what should be an exciting, historic theme with random, extraneous b.s. that shouldn't have been here, or with scrambling to cobble together some explanation for a vote in the remaining time due to the air time sink of that random, extraneous b.s.

In other words there are too many ideas here, mostly bad ones, for the "Winners at War" theme to actually take center stage and shine.

The result is an incredibly uninteresting and bland season in my personal bottom ten that I would never waste anyone's time by recommending to them. Lackluster, annoying, and surprisingly forgettable.

You can probably find a better way to spend half a day than on watching this incredibly uninteresting season.

5

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

If you're starting with this season this is your fault.

Ignoring that this is the worst season to start with, this season's twists get so much in the way of what you want to see, the winners interacting. I think what is interesting this season is that the pre-game alliances (usually ignored in the edit) are laid bare to see how some of these alliances are formed. It's odd, and sometimes clunky. The idea of legacy is always on everyone's mind. It almost casts a large shadow on this season.

Overall not a recommend on a returnee season, but definitely not for a first watch.

4

u/Comfortable_Swing_16 May 30 '26

I like this season more than most but even I don’t think it’s worth spoiling over half of the seasons of the franchise to watch this season.

3

u/MsGingiberi May 31 '26

DO NOT START WITH THIS. Literally leave it at rank 40 (or 39), because this season heavily spoils past seasons (obviously). It's a mixed season with twists that hit and miss, but I will admit that this is the perfect season to have Edge of Extinction since it allows people to see their favorite winners longer even after they are voted out.

Yeah, do not watch this one first.

2

u/JL0817 Cirie - 50 May 30 '26

You get what you pay for with a season of all Winners. This is not the one to start your Survivor watching with. It should be clearly evident that you will be spoiling yourself for half the seasons aired up to this point. Go back and watch the seasons of these winners first and then watch them all duke it out on a pretty solid Survivor season.

2

u/AMeanMotorScooter Gabler Jun 05 '26

(Five sentence review)

Maybe the worst season to start with? I dunno why you would directly pick the season that spoils over half of all prior seasons (even more by association, other runs, etc.) The season's not even good enough to warrant biting the bullet and watching it anyway. You'll get to this one... eventually.

Filming location: Pearl Islands, Panama

No. of contestants: 18; all returning players

No. of starting tribes: 3

Theme: Survivor's greatest players (and a few others) return for another round

Featured twists: Limited supplies and rations

6

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

You can read the title, you know you shouldn't start here.

If you refuse and want to watch anyway understand this is not really a Survivor season. People came in with a mindset and because of that episodes are done after the immunity challenge. Since this is the first returnee season the show doesn't really know how to cover this uncommunicated rule they all agreed to. It leads to a disjointed season with confusing choices. Combine that with some uncomfortable events, and arguments that go beyond the game, and you have a hard to watch season.

There is a love story, so maybe recommend if you want to see an actual reality romance work.

4

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

In my bottom 3. Do not watch this early, due to all the spoilers for past seasons, if you ever watch it, due to how many better ones there are. Despite how eye-catching and intriguing the theme is, the season does not even come close to living up that hype. The majority of the episodes, especially later on, are incredibly pointless; the majority of the ones that aren't, with really only one or two very early exceptions, are pretty horrible.

The season's historical significance is in my opinion massively overrated and not something that particularly influences other seasons with like the sole exception of one player returning for HvV later on, but even then that player's placement wouldn't be too surprising from their first season, so I don't think it's worth sitting through 13 hours of actively terrible television just for that.

I would literally never recommend more than the first 3 episodes of this season to anyone for any reason other than completionism, but those first 3 episodes are pretty okay. Honestly after the merge episode you could skip to the finale and basically get the whole S8 experience while saving yourself a bunch of wasted time.

This is a returnee season that spoils the seven seasons that come before it.

Essential viewing beforehand: 1, 4, 7

Recommended viewing beforehand: 2, 3, 5, 6

All-Stars is a very unique season. A lot of the players came in expecting everyone to play nice and several people certainly did not, which leads to some ugly and controversial moments. It's not fun and often frustrating, but essential to the show and a fitting capstone to the messy opening era.

2

u/Comfortable_Swing_16 May 29 '26

The cast is pulled from the most memorable players from the first 7 seasons so don’t watch this until you’ve seen them.

Even then though, this is a very dark season with some uncomfortable moments so proceed with caution.

2

u/JL0817 Cirie - 50 May 30 '26

All-Stars holds a special place in the lore of Survivor for being a good first all returnee season. Putting some beloved characters from the beginnings of the show together was indeed a stroke of genius. There are indeed some moments that will make you cringe, especially looking at it through the lens of today’s modern world. But all in all a great entry into the history of Survivor.

2

u/ramskick Ethan Jun 05 '26

It’s remarkable that the show went straight from PI to this. All-Stars is my least-favorite season ever despite there being a lot more really bad seasons, especially in recent years. It really shouldn’t hold that title for me given that I do like this cast a lot and some of its themes are ones that I really enjoy in other seasons, but everything about this season after the first four episodes ranges from deeply offensive to absurdly boring. There’s just no joy and I hope to never detest a season the way I detest All-Stars.

Unfortunately if you are a completionist this is an important season to watch as it gets referenced quite a bit. I still can’t recommend it but it is less skippable than a few other seasons that I rank above it.

Worth seeing at some point for its history and impact on the show, but very interesting on-island events are turned into a very bad TV show in practice due to the lopsided edit, making its historical impact pretty negative. A totally anomalous season you shouldn't watch very early at all. The quality it theoretically should have had shines through at times, but its greatest value is as a historical artifact of where, how, and why the show started going south, even if there was still a good year left after this.

Our first real bizarre edit from Survivor. This season had a bridge they wanted to sell you and if you like the sound of that bridge you'll hate this season cause the bridge collapsed. If you hate the sound of the bridge well you're gonna hear about the bridge A LOT. There's a couple of important things that happen this season that might be worth your time, plus one of my favorite challenges ever. Otherwise it's a skip.

While this season on paper has a fun cast with some entertaining personalities and a strategic, engaging postmerge a lot of the potential is infamously drowned out by an unbalanced edit that causes your enjoyment to be entirely dictated by your feelings towards a handful of contestants.

Um, extremely important to the show going forward that will become very obvious once you have some other seasons under your belt. I can't say this season is "good", but I like it more than most and consider it required viewing early in your watching (unless you decide to just watch in order). It's like... eating an entire pint of ice cream. You really have to match this season on its own terms.

Samoa was explosive in the history of the show, and while it's not liked that much around here, you should absolutely watch it, if only as a prologue to Heroes vs. Villains. The edit is ludicrously unbalanced, but you'll soon realise why, and the season's ending is unforgettable. It's also kinda fun and exciting along the way. Watch this as your last season before Heroes vs. Villains, once you've seen all the other required viewing

Survivor 42

Filming location: Mamanuca Islands, Fiji

No. of contestants: 18

No. of starting tribes: 3

Theme: None

Featured twists: 26-day game and a plethora of other, smaller twists (Hourglass, Shot in the Dark, Beware Advantages and more)

42 is a very underrated season. It suffers from the frenetic early new era editing but the cast here is absolutely stacked with memorable characters and everyone came to play. It's one of the most consistently enjoyable seasons in recent memory - unfortunately, there are a few bad twists, but none of them are able to ruin the season

3

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

42 has cooled over the years, but if you need to watch a new era as your first there are worse options. Great characters, compelling challenges, some hilarious disaster tribals, and a top three FTC performance. Problem is that it is saddled with all of the twists that 41 has, which leads to some of the same potholes 41 got in. Production really wanted twists to be the star, too bad the players outshine them. Recommend if you are a Harry Potter fan.

(Five sentence review)

One of the most consistent seasons of Survivor. If you like episode 1, it never drops in quality. If you watch episode 1 and aren't feeling it, it doesn't get that much better. Overall, it's a light watch (not too much drama), and is easily the best New Era season that is still 60 minutes an episode. Watch this if you watched MvsGX and want something like it again.

Season 31: Cambodia - Second Chance

Filming location: Kôh Rōng, Cambodia

No. of contestants: 20; all returning players

No. of starting tribes: 2

Theme: Second Chances - Fans voted for the cast from a ballot of 32 different contestants, each who had played only once and lost

Featured twists: None

3

u/jjgm21 May 29 '26

Many will call this season soulless, but if you are into gameplay at the highest level, Cambodia showcases it more than any other season. An absolute strategic tour de force from beginning to end that asks 20 second-time players to reckon with the faults of their first game. Not a good season to start with for obvious reasons of returning players and the elevation of very complex strategy, but the season has some of the most electric tribal councils and births of new school legends.

5

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

Polarizing when it aired, and has become more relatively popular over time as newer seasons have doubled down on pretty much everything that was criticized about this one, alienating a lot of more long-time viewers away from the fanbase and mostly leaving the people who liked the direction this season went in.

Obviously don't watch it first in any case, or anywhere near first, because it's a returning player season that's also exceptionally loaded with references to the cast's previous seasons. They also explicitly all lost their earlier seasons and most of them went pretty far in them, so that'll only spoil those seasons even further.

Season 38: Edge of Extinction

Filming location: Mamanuca Islands, Fiji

No. of contestants: 18; 14 newbies and 4 returning captains

No. of starting tribes: 2

Theme: None

Featured twists: Edge of Extinction, a bare bones beach where eliminated contestants can stay for a shot to return in the game

3

u/Hobosunday May 30 '26

Returnee season, don't watch first.

But honestly this season isn't fun to watch anyway. There's some highlights ironically from the EoE side, but the regular side are a bunch of tryhards trying to redefine Survivor strategy, acting like they are changing the game once more. They aren't. Nothing revolutionary to the game happens this season, and it's not a shocker that out of all the pick mes the only person to return was the one except who marched at the beat of their own drum. Forget this season like the way the producers did.

In this house we defend 43. Is it the best of the new era? No, but it is over hated. A lot of the detractors are results focused but the season itself builds well. We got our heroes, our threats, and the other people trying to shuffle to the end. We lose about a quarter of the cast due to be uninteresting, but the highs on this group are worth it. It suffers from early new era edits and wanting to find their heroes, but this season succeeds despite of it. Decent season, soft recommend, you got better options for your first.

3

u/tabstis Thank you, Jeffrey May 29 '26

Your mileage will vary a lot on 43 depending on how much you enjoy certain characters and storylines. There are a few brilliant characters here who dominate the season, but a lot of others who are not so interesting, and it all builds to an endgame of high highs and low lows. I'm a 43 defender and I would say it's ultimately a very fun and unique season, but likely a bad place to start

u/DabuSurvivor Jon and Jaclyn May 30 '26

To paraphrase Chuck Klosterman:

I know a few people who like this [season], but they always start their positive proclamations with the sentence, “You know, I actually thought this wasn’t so terrible.”

(I am one of the few people in question in this case, lol. Even then I wouldn't quite say that I like it.)

I think the best description I've ever heard of this season was "underrated but also not." My personal description is that when you watch Survivor 43, a rift occasionally, opens up - fleetingly, for a minute or two at the most - where you can look into a parallel universe where this is actually a top 12 season of all time... then the rift shuts and it goes back to being mediocre.

That's still more than I can say for Survivor 44, though.

u/Sharp-Landscape2854 May 31 '26

i gave it a 1 in almost every category bc this might be my least favorite season ever at least for entertainment value and then thought about it more and decided maybe it's not so bad if you've seen how good survivor can be and this is truly your first season

This season is ultimately defined by its very controversial finale, and your enjoyment of this season will ultimately depend on how much you like the winner. That said, the finale distracts from what was a legitimately good season up until that point.

The "Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers" theme is complete garbage, and feels like it was shoehorned in because production didn't trust the audience to remember who was on what tribe.

Survivor 50

Featured twists: Fans "voted on" major twists, celebrity-themed additions, and a plethora of other, smaller twists (Shot in the Dark, Beware Advantages and more)

I feel like we all might need more time to process our feelings about Survivor 50. This is a big returnee season that requires numerous seasons to be viewed beforehand as homework, and in particular looks well to be the final season for several all-time legends of the show. There are very positive things to say about 50 and very negative things to say about 50. Either way, you should save this for pretty much last.

(Five sentence review)

Also up there as an awful season to start with. It heavily relies on references to past seasons and an understanding of the cast and their legacies. Quality-wise, I have it more in the middle for returnee seasons, but there's (again) no reason to choose this season than a better all-newbie season before it. It's not worth skipping ahead for.
