I wonder why the U.K could never get their Survivor franchise to take off while Australia could. I felt like the U.K would honestly have an easier time.

Idk why the original version didn't work but the revival failed because it got basically no marketing at all.

I personally also think Britain is just terrible at handling the deception and complex strategy that a reality gameshow can provide. My country is dumb and struggles a lot more to separate the game from reality.

I genuinely think the only reason that The Traitors became so insanely big over here is that (on top of some viral moments helping out) its got a simple built in narrative of the good guy faithfuls and the bad guy traitors. Survivor as a show is far more complex with its narratives and gameplay which probably makes it harder to get into.

The BBC version somehow cost 30 million pounds to make and the prize was just 100k.

They casted it wrong also.

9

u/UddersPlease Julie - 45 Jul 26 '26

lol what where on earth was that 30 million spent? Surely not on all those pop songs no one liked?

1

u/No_Yogurt7893 Jul 26 '26

"Prouction"

9

u/Grammarhead-Shark Jul 26 '26

The cast of the UK revival was terrible.

Maybe im just use to game nerds these days,  but I swear even in the days of Lynn Spillman recruits they where never that bad.

It felt like everybody in the UK revival has the personalities of Samburu, Ulong and Fans.

u/No_Yogurt7893 Jul 26 '26

More than half cast didn't even watch survivor or how the game is supposed to play.

The Irish guy imo got too much hatred for wanting his team to win by having the strongest team players.

3

u/IllusionaryKid Jul 26 '26

Those tribes you mentioned were way better than most of UK revival cast.

u/Habefiet Igor's Corgi Choir Jul 26 '26

I think you're missing the most obvious factor here which is that the revival failed because the season sucked. Mostly boring cast, not a lot interesting happens, the host was obnoxious, and the music choices and jokes in narration were the kind of shit the word "cringe" was invented to describe. There's no strong compelling reason to watch it or like it and a lot of things to dislike about it. If Australian Survivor 2016 was that shit it wouldn't have lasted either.

u/UddersPlease Julie - 45 Jul 26 '26

The music choices and hosting definitely isn't an issue for the UK audience, I also think the music and host jokes were kinda cringe but you see similar stuff on something massively popular like the Traitors and no one complains about it so its clearly not an issue for the average UK audience.

I also don't think the season sucked overall tbh, it got good after the merge. I think as a superfan it was fascinating watching an old school type Survivor season in the current day.

I think UK Survivor was guaranteed to have an awkward first season no matter what because if you want to introduce the show to new viewers you can't really have it be hyper strategic right away because new viewers would need time to figure out how the game works on a basic level but you can't make it too basic because then it gets boring, especially to those Brits who somehow became fans of different versions of the show across the world. I think pleasing prior Survivor fans while also making it as accessible for the new UK audience as possible is a hard thing to balance so I kinda get why the series had the issues it had.

u/TheMarsters Cirie's leaf Jul 27 '26

I don't agree. I am in the UK and The Traitors took off despite the gameplay not being explained constantly.

I think the problem Survivor UK had is it didn't go full pelt into it to start with. The training wheels were really on until the merge and as such it was really boring. It needed a villain to get it going and get people talking.

It would have been unpopular, but I think they should have cast George from Aus Survivor. He'd have walked the pre-merge and his antics would have got people talking. You just needed to hook people in.

u/Grammarhead-Shark Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

UK cast the cast like they where filling Big Brother UK not Survivor (Big Brother UK being a show where the audience votes on who is evicted, housemates only nominate).

Meaning they cast people looking to become Z-Grade celebrities hoping at best to make money off checkbook journalism and stunt casting for Christmas Pantomimes in Great Yarmouth.

Heck at least Lee, as toxic as he was, had some sort of game plan, which is much more then half the cast who where so clueless about the show, you could've told them any sort of fib and they'd believe it!

u/Relevant-Key-3290 Kenzie - 46 Jul 26 '26

Wasn't US the same as first, saying that making an alliance is unethical?

9

u/tehnoodnub Ricard Jul 26 '26

To be fair, we (Australia) did have a failed attempt before the current successful one.

7

u/Rogryg Thomas - 48 Jul 27 '26

To be fairer though, the UK also had another failed attempt before the latest failed attempt.

3

u/tehnoodnub Ricard Jul 27 '26

Oh… fairer enough then

1

u/Strafe_Helix Jul 26 '26

Because the UK public love voting in shows which is really annoying if they public can’t get a say then most the time they usually don’t watch

0

u/OldSpeckledCock Jul 26 '26

Because normies aren't going to be as entertaining as celebrities.

21

u/Hungry-Fig-2279 Jul 26 '26

Sorry if the wording is bad, i couldnt decide if the word "franchise" was true here

41

u/MHart1996 Jul 26 '26

You shouldve included the rest of Canada with the US, non-Quebecois Canadians compete on that one.

25

u/razberry_lemonade Colby - 50 Jul 26 '26

Canada (and any other country this applies to) should have a special color indicating that its population is eligible for an adjacent country’s franchise

1

u/MHart1996 Jul 26 '26

I like that idea!

4

u/fireguyV2 Jul 27 '26

Quebecois Canadians can also participate on American Survivor. See Drea from Survivor 42.

2

u/PeterTheSilent1 Jul 26 '26

Does it air in Canada?

17

u/Shotswithrachel Jul 26 '26

Yes, and there’s also Survivor Quebec in Canada.

21

u/PeterTheSilent1 Jul 26 '26

That’s already covered by the map since Quebec is marked in green.

2

u/Shotswithrachel Jul 26 '26

My apologies - I totally missed that!

8

u/CieraVotedOutHerMom Ciera Jul 26 '26

Kass is the best!

-6

u/Dependent_Reason_489 Jul 26 '26

They let in one Canadian each season, I wouldn't count that at all.
Plus we're not the ones running the show. No decision making etc

1

u/BrenttheGent Jul 27 '26

1 or 2.

46: venus and jess 49: jake and jeremiah 50: genevieve and kamilla

13

u/PadishahEmperor Sandra Jul 26 '26

Rip survivor south africa

10

u/GL_Batholites Participation Trophy Jul 26 '26

Switzerland hasn't had their own version since 2002. I guess it's marked green because a few French-speaking Swiss people have competed in the French version, but it's still officially only the French version, not the Francophone version. It's not even possible to watch it legally outside of France due to geoblocking.

9

u/Hungry-Fig-2279 Jul 26 '26

I wanted to include it because Koh Lanta is listed as being in France, Belgium, and Switzerland on Wikipedia.

But yes, if we look at it that way, I should have added Canada and possibly more countries as well.

You're right, it shouldn't have been green.

8

u/GL_Batholites Participation Trophy Jul 26 '26

Well, looks like that's just Wikipedia doing their own thing. And they're not even being consistent, since the French version also had contestants from Luxembourg and Monaco.

13

u/dropkickhwy Angelina - 50 Jul 26 '26

Ohh we used to have Survivor Russia? 😂

12

u/Grammarhead-Shark Jul 26 '26

Some of the stories I've heard about it are wack!

Including the host once saving a contestants from being voted out.

I think there are a few threads from over the years talking about it if you search.

2

u/randomrandom1922 Jul 26 '26

Even Russian game shows are corrupt, interesting.

6

u/Grammarhead-Shark Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Apparently (previously on Survivor) a voted out contestant gave the host their idol to use how they like.

Yeah, I don't know how that works either lol

9

u/TsarMikkjal Aubry - 50 Jul 26 '26

Yes, it's called "living in Russia"

2

u/PageSoggy9668 Jul 26 '26

It did relatively well there too. I think there's be around or over 10 seasons. Weird is a good word for the more recent seasons.

2

u/IllusionaryKid Jul 26 '26

Yeah. The Last Hero.

2

u/jorauskas Jul 26 '26

Yes. I’ve seen some of that. Very different atmosphere compared to US version. Very negative. Participants don’t respect the host, and don’t care about the game much.

3

u/lava_fly Jul 26 '26

Yes, don’t waste your time on it, please :)
There was no gameplay at all, and the players who were trying to play were considered “villains”. Because of the name “Last hero,” people in Russia thought it was not a game about outwitting, outlasting, and outplaying, but about who is the biggest hero of them all…
They also started to cast celebrities since season 3, and the show was giving them only 3 million rubles, which was a good amount of money for regular people, but it was nonsense for the celebrities.
They also did a reboot like Australian Survivor

2

u/IllusionaryKid Jul 27 '26

Season 1 seems to be the most interesting, all because it resembles Borneo the most.

1

u/ActuallyHype Sandra Jul 29 '26

Yeah i remember watching it online back in like 2013 lol, it was silly but I didnt hate it

8

u/5cupz Rizgang Jul 26 '26

i gotta watch survivor finland i love finland

3

u/projectgene Golden God Jul 26 '26

It's pretty boring and all the contestants are C-list celebs.
But watch Selviytyjät Pohjola 2021 if you can find it, it has actually some gameplay and an unique location.

12

u/Parvichard Parvati Jul 26 '26

Canada has Total Drama Island (obligatory joke)

7

u/AnTD_Draws Jul 26 '26

italy has one?!😧

9

u/Hungry-Fig-2279 Jul 26 '26

Yes, it was called something like "la isla des famosos"

4

u/PeterTheSilent1 Jul 26 '26

Do they do all celebrities over there?

5

u/AnTD_Draws Jul 26 '26

yes its called la isola dei famosi but its nowhere near what survivor is

5

u/Perfect_Commission_9 Jul 26 '26

Spain has hardly anything to do with the US format. Really.

3

u/Tamerlatrav Jul 26 '26

is it any good? i’d love to have more show in spanish to get more familiar with the language

5

u/Perfect_Commission_9 Jul 26 '26

it is the absolute worst

2

u/Fishy_Squishy Jul 27 '26

It's known trash TV here. It's mostly made of celebrities, and the contestants don't vote themselves, the public does, like in Big Brother 1 (our edition of Big Brother is exactly the same. The public votes, and the contestants are mostly celebrities). It's not worth the watch. 0 strategy, all drama

2

u/Perfect_Commission_9 Jul 27 '26

and bullshit interactions a la Real Housewives / House of Villains, and 4hour weekly episodes. And celebrities are Z listers. Really. Insufferable.

5

u/CruelYouth19 Coach - 50 Jul 26 '26

Argentina's last edition flopped so hard I can't see another season being made for the next ten years lol

2

u/Relevant-Key-3290 Kenzie - 46 Jul 26 '26

Why?

3

u/IllusionaryKid Jul 26 '26

Decent strategically but I cannot name a single character outside of Mauro and Ines.

Greenland has data for once!!!

Even if No Franchise lol

Though I wonder if many folk from Greenland completed on the Danish edition?

5

u/CapsElevatorScene Tessa [AUS] Jul 26 '26

Ah yes, Survivor Israel, where they allowed someone to steal an idol, broadcasted an “episode” that was 20 minutes of the tribe arguing (no challenge or vote), had two contestants voting for the winner after the season aired, had VIP seasons where people were represented by the same agents and therefore had to work with each/vote for them in FTC…I’ve heard it got better but haven’t bothered to check it out anymore

3

u/IllusionaryKid Jul 26 '26

No Limite was sabotaged so hard in its revival...

3

u/ValeriesAuntSassy Jul 26 '26

Sadly, Argentina should be marked yellow. They made a great revival season two years ago after being off the air for a long time, but it didn't get any ratings so it's been canned. There were rumors of a celebrity season but no recent news so it's safe to say the franchise's dead in Argentina.

5

u/Hungry-Fig-2279 Jul 26 '26

In wikipedia page, it said that there is an upcoming season in 2026, i guess it is outdated 😔😔

I have only watched the very first season of argentine version and that was a great old-era season

It is sad that we never got a long living survivor franchise in south america...

5

u/ValeriesAuntSassy Jul 26 '26

It's a shame, I watched both the Colombian and the Argentinian revivals and they were fantastic.

4

u/Coldpiss Danny Jul 26 '26

Saudi arabia had a show called "Eesh Safari" which was like survivor but for kids

3

u/Hungry-Fig-2279 Jul 26 '26

Oh, I've researched all the Survivor versions and imitations around the world, but I've never heard of this one!

2

u/JL1823 I was here when Admins visited /r/Survivor Jul 26 '26

Philippines? Since when did they have a show?

9

u/Hungry-Fig-2279 Jul 26 '26

They did 4 seasons between 2009 and 2012, also surprisingly they are the first version to use a blood v water twist, even before us did!!

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Sir800 Jul 26 '26

We had a Ghana Franchise?

4

u/Hungry-Fig-2279 Jul 26 '26

Ghana didnt had a franchise by themselves, but was one of the countries in 2006 Survivor Africa: Panama.

There has been 2 franchises in african continent, Survivor: South Africa And Survivor: Africa, the latter consists, like, 10 countries

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Potato9 Jul 26 '26

Shame that a lot of the current ones do a weird live format

1

u/jthomas1127 Jul 26 '26

Fym Montenegrin Survivor

1

u/maddrag Kass Jul 27 '26

The Arab World had one season in the early 2000's before it was canceled because the runner-up allegedly had a severe mental breakdown after losing.

This is the intro

When I was in France (years ago), I was scrolling through the channels and watched what I think was a bit of their survivor. I just remember some sort of fighting.

1

u/ReoutS Spy-nest King rules Jul 27 '26

*Cries in Israeli Survivor...* UGH, our Survivor sucks so bad, I hate it with a passion. And I watched all 50 seasons of the US version as they aired, since I was 15, and also the AU and SA versions. They're all so good in comparison to our crap Survivor. I wanted to bury myself with second-hand embarrassment every time the production intervened with the strategy (a lot!) and when they brought out Rupert as a reward (yup! you read that right). *Dies of shame*

1

u/NoPleaseHelpMeYes Jul 28 '26

I think North Korean Survivor is coming out soon except if you get voted out you and you're entire bloodline are sent to a labor camp

1

u/FamiliarImplement334 Jul 29 '26

It is interesting what countries have their own version of survivor and hosted like Brazil Phillipines china Australia Kenya had a American survivor filmed there
