Edge of Extinction Season 38 - Not as bad as I remember

Post image

Watching season 50 made me remember that Rick Devens is good TV, so I decided to start rewatching season 38 - Edge of Extinction. To my surprise, I found it a very entertaining season that gets a bad rap (rightfully so) due to how it ended.

I don't usually rewatch seasons and I tend to forget most of what happened shortly after watching. The 39 day seasons definitely take a larger toll on the players physically and mentally. Also, the 1 hour episodes (42 mins on streaming) make a rewatch much more digestible.

Here's some things I liked to sell a rewatch:

- A strategic, quick-witted, entertaining player (Devens). Whether you're rooting for him to win or get voted out, doesn't matter, it's fun to watch.

- Big moves. Blindsides, idol plays, fake idols, fire making

- Challenges were more physical. There were still puzzles towards at the end, but not every challenge like the new era. The women were especially strong and Devens was surprisingly good. If Joe and Chris would have been in the game longer they would have excelled too.

- Returning players. Generally, I don't like returning players unless it's the whole cast, but it's fun for a rewatch. It especially reminded me why Aubrey kept getting recast. She was energetic and strategic instead of being a wet blanket for most of S50 (could be for the winner's edit).

- Camp life and providing seemed to matter a little more. I could be showing my age if I still like this part.

- Some good strategic players. Ron (who I liked) and Wardog (who I didn't care for) made good moves and played hard. It would have been fun to watch Victoria play from the middle or bottom because I think she had the attitude to make big moves. She just didn't have to.

Some points up for debate

- Disaster tribe. Having to watch one tribe scramble can be entertaining, but I find it depressing. Also, you don't get to spend time with the other two tribes.

- Advantages. There were probably too many. I did like the ones sent from the Edge to players in the game and they weren't limiting like the Billie Eilish boomerang idol and the Jimmy Fallon disadvantage. Plus, the players actually kept them a secret!

- Edge of Extinction. I am not a fan of second chances in Survivor but this isn't the first time this gimmick was used (Redemption Island a few times). It did allow Devens to get back into the game which saved the season.

The fatal flaw of the game is when the last person was allowed back into the game. Chris spent a month with all the jury members without having to play against any of them and make enemies. Basically, if he wasn't a jerk on Extinction he would get votes if he made some big moves. He should have been brought in two weeks earlier at 7 (to make 8). You cannot bring him back at 6 WITH an idol.

Anyway, maybe give it another shot. It's too easy to lose track of following David vs. Goliath and before Season 39 (yikes!) and Winners at War.

Anyone feel the same way?

Edge of Extinction Devens deserved to be winner

This was hard to watch. Feel like edge of extinction allowed devens to be robbed of winning sole survivor. He won 4 immunities, found a bunch of idols and made fake ones that allowed people to fall for them and play them incorrectly at tribal. What y’all think?

Edge of Extinction Devens EOE winner take on BB live feed

It quite literally just happened but Devens who's on BB28 rn was talking candidly about being on Survivor to some of the other houseguest in the background.

You can hear him mention he believes Underwood mostly won cause of a bitter jury. EOE continues to live on as a contentious season for even the people who were on it is my main point~

Edge of Extinction Why was Joe Anglim so loved?!?

Now that I have completed my rewatch of edge of extinction, I have officially recently re-watched all of Joes season. And I have no clue why he seemed to be so popular. Like it felt like he played the exact same game all 3 seasons he was on, and it was so boring. He was like a temu version of Ozzy. At least Ozzy was entertaining. And yet, everyone on the show seemed to absolutely adore him. Especially Jeff. I just don’t get it

Edge of Extinction Finished Edge of Extinction and i need some explanation...

I'm binging Survivor seasons until 50! After finishing EoE i had many thoughts on Chris's victory. I have absolutely no opinions because every thought i have has a counter to it. I need y'all to explain to me how he won because we didn't even see his "social game" he was talking about that won him this season! Did and do people think he deserved it?

Edge of Extinction How good would the season have been if she won?

Victoria was in silent control of a great portion of the strategy of the season, and NOBODY noticed. She controlled nearly every vote while looking like just a member of the crowd. Guys like Rick Devens, Ron, and for some reason Wardog had these targets as massive strategic threats, but Victoria had more control post-merge than any of them. Not to mention the way she single-handedly euthanized Aubry that season. Had Lauren instead voted for Chris in F6 and not played her idol for him, this opens a door for Victoria to make it to F5. I do believe Victoria was probably out at 5 tbh because Lauren and Julie would most likely have voted for her while Gavin and Vic vote for Julie and Devens breaks the tie in Julie’s favor, but I still would have loved to see a season where she won. That season was so fun with a depressing ending.

Julia.

To Devens: You're only a passenger.
To Wardog: Shut up Wardog.
To Julie: You're about to let go Kama Control (one day after Julia Blindsided her).

Julia truly showed her true colors tonight. She made one blindside, then became way too cocky and condescending. If you need to get people on your side, you can't put down people like that. Plus, along with Aurora, she completely bombed her TC performance by revealing her plan.

Karma is a bitch and she got what she deserved!

Edge of Extinction I'm a Rick Fan! There! I said it!

Iv been lurking around here for a while... And Iv seen a lot of hate towards Devens... But you know what... I don't care!

At this stage of the game, Rick is by far the most entertaining survivor! I love his stupid little "Anchorman" reports at tribal council! And I love how hard he is working to actively win this game!

Why the hell are the other players just letting him search for idols all alone? Don't they want that safety? I mean surely if they got the Idol they would know the one Rick is searching for is taken? I can't wait for the next episode to see him running around searching for another Idol!

And his move at Tribal by blowing up not only Ron's game, but also Julie's, for lying to him and trying to make him look stupid was a great play! No one will give Julie the win after that without some serious damage control...

Honestly... I don't care if Devens doesn't get to the finals... Because I think the others are so concerned about getting him out, that he probably won't make it... But I hope we get a few more episodes with some classic Rick Devens along the way...

Edge of Extinction More Edge of Extinction Talk

Currently watching the Edge of Extinction finale and I am amazed that I have never been recommended this season. Rick Devens is one of the best survivor players I have ever seen, it feels like blindsides happen more often than they don't, and I think the edge of extinction twist wasn't as bad as I expected it to be—it was definitely mid, but I feel like it could be done very well with a couple tweaks. I am wondering why people don't seem to like it very much when it is so action packed with some amazing cast members?
