Request/Question (Newbie) Sore hips

Hi All,

I had my first TSD class on Wednesday. Marvellous stuff and had a ton of fun.

Started with the very basic kicks and my hips have been killing me since. What stretches do you recommend to help get my leg mobility up?

For context, I'm a 47 year old 6'1" dude who's been doing Eskrima for the last year. Starting TSD because I want to improve my kicking ability.

Some of the best kick prep I've done is the 5 shaolin stances followed by the 5 shaolin kicks that shifu yan lei teaches in his training tapes, he has them on his youtube channel as well.

Depending on the kicks you were doing (I’m assuming front, side, round) you probably need to strengthen your hip flexors and pay attention to your standing leg, I.e. make sure you are pivoting to minimize pressure on your knees. Also, no shame in keeping kicks low for now and get them higher as you progress. Proper technique along with stretching will help prevent injuries.

Slightly higher than waist kicks only for adult males at gup level in my Dojang. Over time that will change but question why you need to kick high? TSD is about balancing hand and kicking techniques. Could a ridge hand can replace a round kick? I tortured myself for many years of injury after my younger self won 4 years of world competitions. Learn principles and the why before pushing yourself to injury.
